That afternoon I looked at this self storage website and it's profit and loss and turnover, weekly takings, occupancy percentage and the information that Ryan gave me, etc etc.

Judging from what I read it's was run by the owner and his wife only until she died and now it's just him. No staff and it only opened 08.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday.

It should be 24/7 access and have helpful staff selling boxes, sellotape, padlocks etc etc.

I phoned Ryan to ask to view it.

It was arranged for tomorrow at midday.

I arranged for Arlo, Aiden and John to come with me.....

After evening meal I went to the staff quarters to see how Lewis was as he's staying the night.

Pat let me in and their was Lewis, just in a pair of shorts sitting on the sofa with Nathan, who was also just in shorts.

In fact Pat, Merv, Ethan, Tyler and Liam were also just in shorts!!

Liam was checking up on Lewis as well......

I then went to see John and Henry in their flat to tell John what I wanted him to advise on tomorrow at the self storage place.

Next morning....

Full English breakfast cooked and prepared by Liam....

Thought he was off sick? But he convinced Billy that he was ok to work......

11.20am....

Me, John, Arlo and Aiden drive to this self storage place for a first look....

We arrive and I can immediately see it has been a bit neglected over time.

The car park needed tidying up and the signage was poor and needed lightening up.

We met Joe and Ryan in the car park.

Inside the building needed a bloody good clean and painting to be honest.

I wasn't impressed......

Reception was empty, no chairs, no tables, no where for respective new clients to sit.

And above all no coffee machine!!

Just a kettle and instant coffee out of a jar!!!

I could see John giving it all a look once over and Arlo and Aiden looking at each other.

We saw the seller and I asked if the lads could have a walk about?

The computer he had was aged and really not fit for purpose.

All it was good for was printing invoices.

He was still using index cards, all hand written, with the units renters name and address written on them!!

Impressed? Not on your nelly!!

We sat talking generally about things drinking instant coffee!

We were their an hour and hadn't see hair or tail of any clients.

John came back and me and him disappeared out of the office for a chat......

He told me what needs doing etc etc

The list was endless.....and costly.

Arlo and Aiden then joined us and gave their views on the place....

It was Aiden who thought with the right marketing and a re-brand, he could do "something with it"

He made my Business Centre so succesful, filled all the offices, extended the Centre by buying the old co-op next door....I listened to him......

Arlo explained how he could market it and gave me a rough idea of the cost, judging of course on how much I really wanted to spend, so he gave me a "middle" costings.

Aiden also told me what reception really needs like comfy chairs, a new computer system, 24/7 access and new security system, Cctv and external and Internal door locks.

The cost was climbing every minute!!

I listened to them and then had a buying fiqure in mind....the amount I was willing to pay to purchase the building.

I went back into the office and saw the owner, Ryan and Joe deep in conversation looking at some spreadsheets.

I sat down and said "right. Let's not beat about the bush. I'm not impressed with the amount it's going to cost me to update this place. I fully understand your situation though and don't want to upset you or take the piss"

The owner looked at me.....

"Ryan and Joe here told me you would be blunt and truthful and knows exactly to the pound what your willing to pay for my business and for the building"

Ryan then told us.....

"Based on the normal buying principles and calculations I don't think we can apply them fully in this case. For example the price of the business and the 'goodwill' price added. So we are looking at the freehold property value and a little added on for the business."

Ryan went on to also say that he is in a difficult position as we are both his clients, meaning he has to get as much as possible for the business but get it as cheap as possible for me!!

I knew I had to have my business head on and not get emotional or feel sorry for him.

I decided on what the maximum I was prepared to pay...

I looked at Joe and Ryan and then at the owner.....

"Give me a ballpark fiqure of what you want.....I will then counter with my offer. But if we are miles apart there will be no further negotiations and I will wish you well and good luck"

The owner looked at me.....

"Wow!! Thats some opening gambit that. Ryan told me your negotiations are hard but fair, but I never expected that!!!"

He then gave me a fiqure for the business and the building freehold.

It was lower than I expected !!!

Earlier when me and John were talking about the costings to get this place up to scratch, I told him what I will pay for it.

He said if I can get it for that price he will be amazed as its worth more. He didn't believe I could get it for that and he told me that, "if by some miracle you do then I will be your naked servant in your flat for 5 evening at your beck and call!"

Anyway......

I counted his offer offering £25,000 less than he asked for, saying cash in your bank account within 1 hour of signing the contracts of sale and purchase, at the solicitors.

Joe told the owner I was serious and Ryan told him that's a bit too low of an offer!!!

It seemed that Joe was now representing me and Ryan representing the owner!!

I had to get it for at least £15,000 less than his initial offer to win the bet with John!

In my mind he had already come down about £40,000 from what I was expecting him to say in the first place!

He counter offered and I was tempted but I needed him to go another £14,999 lower to win the bet with John!!!

I decided to state my final fiqure, which means I win the bet with John by a misely £1...!!!!

I offered the fiqure to him and stood up with my hand outstretched to shake his hand on the deal, saying "shake it now and we have a deal or I'm going"

He looked at me but didn't stand or offer his hand.....

I walked out of his office and saw John with Arlo and Aiden and told him that he was lucky this time!

John smiled and Aiden asked wot I meant by that?

John told him about the bet.....

Arlo and Aiden called him lucky bastard, and they all started laughing...

Then.........

Ryan came out of the office asking if "I wanted to make the deal?"

John stopped laughing, took a big gulp and said "oh fuck!....."

I went back into the office...

The owner told me that Joe has said that I will just walk away from the deal and won't come back....

He also said that Ryan supported Joe and also said "Jason only allows one bite of the cherry"

The owner looked at me......

"I'm prepared to walk away as well Jason. Now are you going to improve your offer or not?"

So...he wants to play like that then does he?

At that stage I knew I had him by the 'short and curlies' as it was him that invited me back into the office.........

I looked him square in the face....

"No...thats my offer, if it's unacceptable then I wish you well"

I then stood up and walked to the door.

I then heard "deal..ok Jason I accept your offer"

I turned round to see Joe smiling and the owners hand outstretched for me to shake it.....

We shook hands.....

Ryan told us he will contact the solicitors now and get the ball rolling..........

I left the office and found John very red in the face and Arlo and Aiden telling him he was stupid betting with me and now he has to face the consequences!

We drove back to the hotel and Arlo was really baiting John saying that I will have him stark bollock naked making me and Dylan loads of cappuccinos and hoovering my flat and even ironing my shirts.

Aiden then had me laughing so hard I nearly wet myself, by telling John, "I'm gonna ask Harry to get some grapes so you can feed them to Jason, like the Roman slav*s did to their emperors!"

We got back to the hotel...

Leo looked at me and smiled saying "congratulations"

How did he know?

Adam and Sebastian saw us and asked John if he wants them to paint and decorate the storage place?

Bloody hell!!!

Who doesn't know?

We went into Arlo's office to find Aaron had started to produce a marketing campaign for the storage place....he had pictures and literally re-branded it with new colours etc!! Wonders of the computer!

Then Harry came in with 5 cappuccinos and congratulated me on my new business!!

For fucks sake!!!

I suppose everybody knows now!!

Then Ian came in and said "I heard the grounds of the storage place are in a bit of a mess? Want me to load the trailer up with me stuff, when you move in and tidy up the grounds?"

I bloody give up now!!!

Bet they know when I go for a piss and shit!!!

Billy then came in......

He opened a laptop computer and showed me a 'programme' specifically made for self storage companies to log the units rented, producing invoices etc etc etc......

Evening meal........

Tony gave his normal speech thanking everybody for their hard work etc and then congratulated me on another new business acquisition!!

As we were finishing our meal Aiden put a paper bag in front of John telling him he needs these for later.

John peeked into the bag, looked at Aiden and called him a "bastard"

Aiden and Arlo laughted.... and Aiden said..."Tá fáilte romhat”.

He then said it in English.....

"Your welcome"........

John laughted......he looked at Henry and Henry said, "serves you right, don't bet with Jason, no sympathy from me!"

7.30pm

I was in my flat with Dylan talking about the self storage business I purchased.

I was setting up another Ltd company and again Dylan was made a Director.

We were looking through the paperwork etc when their was a knock on the door.....

Dylan let John in, who was dressed in tee shirt, shorts and sliders.

"Here at your service" he told me!!

He then started taking off his tee shirt!!!

I told him to stop and just sit down.

Dylan said he will make the cappuccinos, to be told "no" by John as he will make them!

John then took off his shorts, he had no underwear on and walked butt naked apart, from his sliders, to the kitchen and started making the drinks.

Dylan laughted saying he heard about John's bet.

John came in with 2 cappuccinos and asked wot I would like him to do!!

I told him to get dressed and sit down.

"Ok John, you've made some drinks so you have completed the bet so let's call it a day mate"

He looked at me....

"No, I said for the evening. I made the stupid bet so I'm going to honour it. And Lukes in the gym so no doubt Harry will be up in a minute and see I'm not here."

John is a man of honour. If he says he will do something, he will do it, both in his work and personal life. And I know that for a fact. Look when he said after the Orangery and the Flowery fire? He said both would be ready by the morning, and to make sure they were, both him and Henry must have worked 16 hours that day.

It looked like he was being serious about completing his bet...

Right on cue....a knock on the door, and the door opened and Harry just walked in!! He never waits to be asked in...he just walks in....

He saw John bollock naked, smiled and said "Doing your stupid bet then?"

He then handed him the bag that Aiden gave him at the dinner table telling him "you left your bag of grapes on the table mate"

John looked embarrassed telling Harry that their for Jason....

"I've never seen Jason eat grapes?" he replied....

John then told Harry the story about Aiden saying he has to feed Jason the grapes like the roman slav*s did to their emperor.

I saw the look on Harry's face and saw him start hopping from foot to foot.....

Harry wasn't happy!!

"Do wot? Harry said, thats taking the piss!! Thats not on. Thats bloody demeaning!"

I quickly told him that it wasn't my idea and I've told John to get dressed as he has already made us a cappuccino and I certainly don't want to be feed grapes!

Harry started going redder in the face and hopping quicker....

"Thats not fucking on! Get dressed John, NOW! I'll tell Aiden that you done the bet in full"

We all looking at Harry and I swear we saw steam coming out of his ears!

Harry was really upset and angry...

Now John, due to his Martial Arts skills, is fully capable of probably "taking out" anybody here at the hotel, BUT.....he saw the look on Harry's face and just started getting dressed saying "your right Harry"

Now....I've known Harry for few years now and I've seen him get angry before and start hopping foot to foot... but I've only seen him looking like this once before.

A lad, who no longer works here, took the piss and demeaned another new lad to the extent of that lad crying.

Harry wasn't a happy bunny and confronted the piss taking lad in the bar....

Harry told this lad his fortune and told him to "cut it out or their will be big trouble"

The lad foolishly told Harry to "fuck off"......

I didn't witness it but I've heard 3 different versions of what happened next!!!!

The version from Tony is the one I believe.....

He told me that when the lad told Harry to "fuck off" Harry punched him square in the mouth and as the lad dropped to the floor, Harry dived on him and punched him twice more before he was pulled off him by Tony, Ian and Sam!!

Harry was now acting the same way as then.

Harry flew out of my flat......

Oh fuck!!

By the time I got out of my flat, Harry was already in the lift so I had to run the entire length of the corridor and down 4 flights of stairs!!

I came out by reception and shouted at Ethan..."where's Harry!!"

Ethan told me he ran towards the bar.......

Oh shit!!! Harry!!!

I ran to the bar to find chaos!!

Arlo and Aj was holding Aiden and Tom, Tony and Connor holding Harry!

Jesus, Harry was going hammer and tong verbally at Aiden telling him never to disrespect or demean any member of staff.....

Harry called Aiden the "C" word which I have never ever heard him say before....in fact I've never heard any of the lads use that word?

Tony, Sam and Aj managed to get Harry out of the bar and up into his flat....

15 minutes later they all come back down......

Aiden was still in the bar with the others.....

Harry offered his hand out to Aiden which Aiden shook straight away and Aiden had the guts to apologise to him and on seeing John, apologised to him saying "it was meant as a joke, but I realise now how it could have come across wrong"

Harry then apologised to Aiden for saying what he said in the bar but then added.....

"If ever you pull a trick like that again, I will make sure their are no witnesses"

They hugged each other.....

Next morning........

05.10am.....

I got up before Dylan for a change and was first in the shower....

I showered and as I was getting dried I heard voices coming from the bedroom?

Who's Dylan talking too?

I normally walk back from the shower naked, drying myself, but this time I wrapped a towel around me.

Thank god I did!!

There was Harry sitting on the edge of my bed talking to Dylan....

I walked in, he saw me, said hello, and pointed to a cappuccino, that he obviously made for me.

He then apologised for the incident last night with Aiden but said he was so angry at Aiden trying to demean John.

He then told us to enjoy our cappuccinos but don't expect him to make them every morning!!!

You just can't help but love Harry.

I got dressed and went downstairs as or were, and saw Ethan behind reception with Billy.

I went through to the dining room and saw John and Henry laying the breakfast table.....do these 2 ever stop working!!??

I went into the kitchen and found Merv was preparing breakfast, which was Breakfast Burrito's, wrapped in a warm tortilla with eggs, bacon, potatoes, and avocado.

It looked delicious....

Then I found bloody Liam, on crutches, helping him!

I said hello to them and asked what the hell was he doing working?

Liam smiled back, said "hello and I'm working obviously Jason?"

We were eating our burrito's when I heard a cheer from the lads so I turned round to see who had walked into the dining room. It was Nathan and behind him was Lewis....

Lewis was walking with the aid of one of them mobility walkers!!

He looked really happy and the lads all stood up and clapped him in..

Apparently he has some feeling back in his legs but not enough to walk unaided.

Brilliant to see that.....

Midday......

My solicitors phoned saying they have received the contract of sale for the self storage business and they are happy to proceed...God that was quick. They just have to do some "due diligence" checks first.

Joe phoned afterwards and confirmed he has done some financial checks and his due diligence and is happy the storage business has no debts and the turnover declared is correct.

Dylan suggested we find some staff for the storage centre as it just can't close as it had storage units rented!!!

Good thinking Dylan!!

I saw Arlo asking him to contact the

"Self Storage Association (SSA) UK"

Part of their function is offering training courses for self storage management and staff in numerous areas, like operations, sales, and marketing.

I wanted information about the cost of these courses in case I need to train staff and of course become a member of the Association!

Ethan, who works on reception and lives in the staff quarters with Tyler, who works part time in the gym, expressed an interest in the storage business by talking to Leo.

Ethan has 'customer service' qualifications that he gained at college and then by online courses.

He's very competent at his job here and is popular with the lads and customers.

He's very level headed and sorts problems out quickly with no fuss.

He was working late shift today so I went to the staff quarters to have a word with him.....

I knocked on the door to hear a shout of "come in" ...... so I went in.

There was him and Tyler, both in the normal off duty dress, of just shorts and sliders!!

Tyler was hoovering and Ethan was was ironing some shirts...very domesticated!!

Ethan stopped ironing and said he will make me a cappuccino....

I never refuse a cappuccino!!

After he made me a cuppa we sat down on the sofas and I told him that Leo has mentioned that he was interested about the Self storage business?

He smiled and told me that he feels he is ready for a new challenge and wants more responsibility....

I asked him to expand on that.....

He then went on to tell me that he feels the storage business needs a complete re-brand and re-starting up as a 24/7 company.

He feels he would like to be part of that.....

I liked Ethans attitude and that he wants to improve himself...

He also said that Tyler finishes college in 3 weeks time and he could help at the storage business part time along with his part time gym job here at the hotel.

I asked how he seems to know so much about what my plans were for the storage business?

He looked at Tyler before telling me he spoke to Arlo about the marketing plan thus giving him an insight about what I wanted.....

Crafty little bugger!!!

But I liked his initiative!

We were then interrupted by Pat and Merv who saw us 3 talking and apologised for disturbing us....

They started to leave when I called them back saying that this is their home....

I stood up and told Ethan to put together a Business Plan for me... I told him to speak to Arlo in more depth and also to John.

Ethan looked really pleased and him and Tyler 'fist-bumped' each other.

As I was leaving Pat and Merv came out of their room.....dressed, you're guessed it, in just shorts and sliders!!

My mind was buzzing so I needed a good work out in the gym...

I got their just as Tom was going into his treatment room....

I then heard a voice saying "hello" coming from the treatment room.

I put my head in the door to see Lewis laying on his back on Tom's treatment table in a pair of shorts.

Tom was going to give Lewis some leg and back strength training.

He quickly added that Lewis's consultant has agreed to the exercises.

I went and had my workout with the help of Josh who certainly put me through my paces!!!

I showered and then went to the bar for a drink.....

I found Harry doing his midday tea trolley run......

He was joking and laughing with Aiden, which I thought was good considering the incident yesterday.

I went back to reception and saw Arlo's office door open...

I popped my head in and saw Ethan talking to Arlo and looking at pictures etc on Aaron's desk and making notes.

Ethans bloody keen!!

I went to my office, sat down and phoned the Self storage unit.

The owner answered the call before I even heard it ring my end!!!

I asked if it was possible if I could send one of the lads to shadow him and see whats what until we complete the buy?

He agreed......

Joe phoned after that call, saying that he has been in contact with my bank, which incidentally is the same as the self storage business bank and arranged for my new company to take this account over on completion.

I called Ethan into my office..

I asked him if he would 'shadow' the self storage owner to see how it operates and see what needs improving to get it up too the standard required to operate 24/7 and forefill the membership requirements for the "self storage association".

He gave me the biggest smile I have ever seen in my life and he just glowed with happiness........

I told him I will take him their tomorrow morning at 07.30am

I finished with Ethan and went back to reception....

Billy didn't too happy....

I asked if he was ok?

If asked if he could talk "frankly and honestly" with me?

I agreed....

"So are we losing another valuable hotel member of staff to another one of your businesses? They join the hotel, we train them to the best of both our abilities, and then they sod off. Exactly like wot happened with the Flowery, the Business Centre and now the self storage business"

Billy wasn't happy at all and I could fully understand what he was saying.....

I didn't think of it like that, but he was 100% right in what he was saying....

I didn't know how to answer, apart from...

"yes, Billy, I suppose your right, thinking about it. But you and Leo do train them to a great standard, which is good. Look how far you have come? You wanted the opportunity to improve your career and told me so. I gave you that chance and now your the reception Manager. Ethan has expressed that same interest so it's only fair I give him the same opportunity I gave you, don't you think?"

Billy looked at me.... he realised Ethan has done exactly what he done to improve his career....

"I'm sorry Jason, your right, I didn't think that though did I. I feel pretty bad now. Please accept my apologies"

I gave him a hug and told him "no need to apologise mate, I see what you actually meant and I think it's good your thinking about your staff and staffing levels"

Next morning......

07.30am....

Ethan ready and waiting for me to give him a lift to the self storage place for him to shadow the owner and see what needs doing to it.

We get to the storage place at 07.55am and find the owner already their....

We have a quick cuppa of instant coffee (yuk!) And I leave Ethan to it.

On the way back I drop into the Business Centre.

It was very busy with the telephone and mail handling services and reception was also busy with visitors

Dean was busy in the office talking to Aiden on the phone.

I made us 2 a cappuccino and sat down.

Dean printed off the months accounts and bank statements so I could have a look at them.

I was very impressed with the figures!

I got back to the hotel and found Arlo talking to people sitting in reception. Billy told me the people want to hire the function room for a big company awards night. Meal, function room, entertainment and bedrooms.

Arlo has the 'midas' touch so I'm pretty confident he will get the booking.

John and Adam saw me and told me they have list of what needs doing at the storage place.

I read it and even an updated security system and cameras for 24/7 access were listed

I sat in my office, made a decent cappuccino and looked more carefully at the list John had given me.

I wanted more information about the costings so asked Billy where John was?

He said he saw him heading towards the lift.

I went to his flat and knocked on the door...

Henry answered the door and invited me in.

John and Henry were in shorts and sliders and Adam and Sebastian were in their work overalls, with the top part folded down and both shirtless.

John saw me and said "just the man, come and look at these plans and photos I took of the storage place.

They were sitting at the table with the paper stuff and photos in the middle of it.

I sat down and John told me the time scale and order of works that needed doing.

I was impressed....

Everything was listed from painting, gardening, general tidying, new signage, new cctv, new security locks, new office, retail space for selling 'uplifts' like locks and keys, boxes, sellotape, crates, bubble wrap....the list went on!!

I was surprised when he told me the time scale was 7 days work from start to completion! As long as the 4 of them were involved.

The sign writer can make new signs within 3 days and the Cctv and security fitted within 2 days and the outside ground works 2 days if Ian brings all his stuff.

4.00pm....

I went to pick Ethan up from the storage place.

The folder he took with him had grown treble in size!!

He certainly had been making lots of notes and photos.

He was excited on the drive home telling me what he had learned and how the present owner does things.

After evening meal I was relaxing in my flat when their was a knock on the door....it was Ethan.

He asked if he could go through his 'findings' with me.

Dylan said he will get the cappuccinos and biscuits.

The list of 'work needed doing' was nearly the same as John's list but I decided not to tell him (sorry mate!) And praise him for the information he gave me.

I had new news for him.....

My solicitor phoned me just after evening meal saying the contracts are ready to be exchanged tomorrow morning!!

I was just getting my head around what I need to be doing when Ethan came.

I told him the news...he was thrilled.

Dylan smiled at me and nodded....

I held my hand out and asked Ethan if he wanted the Managers job at the self storage centre on a temporary basis to see if he likes it etc etc and to review it in 3 months time.

He shook my hand amd then said he will have words with John and Ian to get things going on the decoration side done both indoors amd outdoors. Billy on the new computer side and Arlo for the marketing campaign.

He then suggested that he will update me daily on the way things are going and to get permission to buy the stuff needed.

He then handed me a 'timetable' of the work!!!

He then said he must go and speak to John and Ian to book them for the day after tomorrow!!

Part 2610.

We have now come to the 'time frame' in the story where Pats mum passes away in hospital.

In real time it is also the anniversary of her passing.

I didn't want to mention about his mum but Pat said it's what happened and he wanted the 'story' to continue, as the readers are aware of his Mum passing anyway.

He also felt strong enough to write about it.....

Myself, Tony and Merv have spoken to him at length and made it very clear we don't have to mention it here in the story, and he certainly doesn't have to write anything....

Hello readers PAT here now....

She was me Mum, and I loved her for what she done for me. I'm not ashamed of her, in fact I'm immensely proud of her and how she dealt with her illness.

It was 08.34am when Leo called me to the office....

Merv and Jason was there and told me to phone the hospital straight away.

I knew deep down it was bad news...

After being put 'on hold' by the hospital, which seemed like forever, but was probably only for 5 minutes the consultant spoke to me.

My Mum had a "Brain aneurysm" at 05.26am and passed away at 07.42am.

The consultant tried endovascular surgery, where he tried putting a small piece of wire mesh inside the aneurysm to slow the flow of blood into it and help a blood clot to form. She unfortunately died on the operating table.

At 09.50am myself Jason, Tony and Merv got to the hospital...I wanted and needed to see me Mum for the last time.

We were directed to a side room at the Mortuary.

Wot a horrible word that it...... Mortuary.

A lovely nurse came and saw us and asked if we were ready to see her.

I asked Merv to come with me, which, thank god he did as when I saw her I became a bit dizzy and he had to hold me up...(Love you Merv)

I cried,....in fact I sobbed my heart out...that was me Mum laying their.....

We stayed for over an hour....

I know this might sound a bit stupid, but I spoke to her... I thanked her for looking after me and that I loved her.....

We got back to the hotel....I was very quiet on the journey home.

I told Jason that I didn't know wot to do now...I've never been in this situation before. I knew I had to organise a funeral but didn't have a clue how too......

Jason sat down with me, put his arm round me and handed me a letter.

I recognised the writing on the envelope....it was me Mums hand writing...."to my darling Son Pat"

I'm so sorry, I'm getting a bit emotional now....

The lads were upset and supporting Pat in their own little ways....from a gentle touch on the shoulder to a full hug.

Later that evening....

I was relaxing in my flat, it had been a stressful and emotional day.

Knock on the door and in walks Harry dressed at normal, tee shirt, shorts and sliders.

I was expecting him as Luke is running the last fitness boot camp.

He done his normal, came in, took his tee shirt off and layed across me for his head massage.....

He says my head massages gets rid of the "fuzziness" in his brain....

I have one of them 'spider' head massagers that Harry loves the feel of.

We normally just watch whatever is on the tv....

But tonight Harry was a bit concerned on how Pat is and how he's coping....

He also told me that Liam is struggling a bit as he thinks that I'm still angry with him and hasn't acknowledged him much since he came out of hospital?

What????

I then thought.....

Perhaps Harry is right......

I didn't deliberately ignore him, but I know I have perhaps ignored him at the dining table, I haven't been to his flat, I haven't praised his cakes, I haven't asked how his mentoring of Merv is going etc etc.

I was feeling a bit guilty now and know this was Harry's intention. He has a habit of phrasing and saying things to make you think......

Harry was right, like he normally is, even when his 'harry-itus' takes over......

I knew his was worried about Liam as he then said, unexpectedly, "I know you can be grumpy and don't suffer fools gladly, but I know deep down you care about him and love him"

Talk about making somebody feel really guilty!!!

Harry then rolled over onto his back and looked me in the eyes.....

He then stood up, put his tee shirt back on and walked out of the door!!!

When Harry talks, people listen. Then they act on what he says....

I put my trainers on and headed to Liam's flat.......

I got to Liam's flat and knocked on the door......

Aj answered the door....and yes he was dressed in the normal off duty uniform of just shorts and sliders.

He invited me in and I saw Liam laying on the sofa dressed the same as Aj....

He saw me and he gave me a great smile, saying he will make me a cappuccino. Aj told him to sit still and he will make the drinks.

He invited me to sit down next to him.

I asked how he was and he showed me his stump all nice and clean with a new stump sock on.

He told me that he is seeing Tom every other day for treatment, until the stitches come out etc.

Then when they have and the swelling has gone down he will get his prosthetic changed so it fits again.

He again apologised for being "so stupid" and promised it won't happen again and will make sure he sees Tom every week.

We then spoke about Merv, his training, and life in general. He genuinely seemed to be pleased to see me, which was a suprise after the way I have treated him, totally unintentional of course.

I felt bloody guilty now to be honest, as Liam is a good lad and an excellent member of staff (yes, that's my apology Liam!)

He seems to manage very well on his crutch.....he only uses one crutch as he says it's easier for him to manoeuvre around the kitchen etc.

Aj came back with the cappuccinos and some hobnob biscuits that I absolutely love......

Aj looked at me and asked if Ethan is going to manage the storage unit?

I told him I can't really answer that, it all depends on whether he likes it and wants to do it?

Liam told him to "just ask him Aj please"

Aj started to say something then stopped and looked at Liam and then at me.

Apparently, even though Aj is happy working in the gym, he feels now is the time to "spread his experience" a bit and he fancies being on the 'front of house' and as he called it "working in the command centre"

Never heard Reception being called the 'Command Centre' before but I bet that phrase came from Liam....

I told him that Reception was Billy's and Leo's domain so he should have words with Billy first to get the gist of what happens on reception etc.....

There was a knock on the door then and Aj looked at Liam.....

Liam told me "thats Billy, Aj has asked him to come round for a chat and a drink"

I smiled.....

"So you have spoken to him already then?"

Aj stuttered.....

"Not yet, nnnoooooooo, but thats why I invited him round"

Liam had answered the door and invited Billy in, who was in his staff uniform still and had just finished his shift......

Billy said hello......

And although I can understand the logic of Aj inviting Billy round for a chat, I was a bit annoyed that this 'chat' wasn't done whilst Billy was actually on duty and not infringing on his personal time.

I decided to leave them for this 'chat' and no doubt I will find out tomorrow what was said.

As I was walking back to my flat I laughted quietly to myself.....

Next morning......

Breakfast...full English, thanks Pat.

Billy gave his morning 'brief' and told us all that the WI ladies are here again and want a nice sit down meal after their meeting.....

Billy laughted as he told us that the ladies have requested that the meal servers they want, are, Harry, Merv and Pat.

He laughted more when he said they have also requested that the lads are naked under their aprons so they can see their bums!!!!

Pat asked if that was a serious request or is he winding us up?

Billy, with a straight face, replied "the actual request from the chair lady was they wear nothing apart from shoes and apron, nothing else"

Pat gulped and looked at both Harry and Merv.......

This morning I was officially purchasing the storage unit by signing the paperwork at my solicitors at 10.00am

John is taking Ethan their, to arrive at 09.45am to officially take over the business and not only collect the keys to the doors but to change the locks as well.

09.30am I walked past reception to get into the car when I noticed AJ behind reception, not in his gym uniform but in full hotel uniform!!!

He looked bloody smart and gave me a huge smile....

I'm now the owner of the storage unit......!!!

John and Ethan collected the keys off the owner and John is now changing the locks.

Ethan is setting up the computer in the office.

Adam and Sebastian have arrived and are now building a 'retail unit' that will sell masking tape, scissors, locks and keys, packaging materials, cardboard boxes with a wide assortment of sizes, including specialty wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes, and durable double-walled options for heavier items. Bubble wrap, foam wrap, and packing paper to cushion fragile items, covers for mattresses, sofas, armchairs, and general dust covers for other furniture, permanent marker pens to clearly label the boxes.

Once it's built we will order the goods to sell.

The new signage is ordered and will be fitted in 3 days.

I decided to leave John and Ethan to it!!

I got back to the hotel to find Aj still smiling.....

Billy told me he's a very quick learner and his customer skills are great.

I told Tom he's welcome to employ somebody to take over from Aj in the gym.

Their was 63 old biddies from the WI staying for dinner!!

Apparently the extra WI ladies heard what Harry and Merv done last time, where they served the ladies dinner shirtless and wanted to see them do it for themselves!!!

These ladies are in their 60 - 80 year old bracket.....

What naughty ladies they are!!

I was worried about Pat.....

His mum has just passed away but he wanted to work...as the letter that I handed to him on the day she passed away from her, had all her funeral arrangements organised and paid for. The appointed funeral directors knew exactly what to do as his mum had even chosen the funeral music etc etc. The funeral was fully arranged and all what Pat had to do was literally turn up......

I went to the kitchen and the lads were preparing the ladies beef roast and all the trimmings. And also preparing a Vegetable wellington, which is a mix of roasted vegetables, lentils, mushrooms all wrapped in puff pastry for the 3 vegetarians.

I asked Pat if he was ok?

He smiled and said he was.."but not looking forward to the serving, bollock naked under my apron..."

Harry, being Harry, of course teased Pat telling him the old biddies will touch his arse and chest and try and feel his cock!!!

Pat went white as a sheet and asked "what if I get an erection? Jesus I'll die of embarrassment"

John phoned me from the storage unit.

All main locks have now been changed. He has 3 sets of keys and wondered if I wanted to give a set to Ethan? A set to me and set for the hotel key safe?

He asked if him, Henry, Adam and Sebastian could spend the rest of the week at the unit painting and decorating. The retail unit is practically built already!! It just needed some partioning being installed, next to the reception desk. He also asked if Ian could visit tomorrow with his tools to tidy up the car park and grounds.

John doesn't hang around!!!

Pat was still worried about serving the old WI biddies......

Arlo was in the kitchen talking to Dylan about something or other and heard what Pat was saying....

Now as you are probably aware the WI ladies always leaves a BIG tip knowing that Harry always donates it to Arlo's charity.

The ladies love Harry....

Arlo left and then came back with Aaron......

They had a word with Harry, Merv, Pat and Dylan...

Whatever Arlo said had Pat smiling.

Dylan went into the function room and told the ladies that as a special treat for them, one of the servers will actually be Arlo of Arlo's charity!!

The ladies whooped and clapped as Harry, Merv, Pat, Aaron and Arlo arrived with their food wearing nothing but shoes and aprons!!!

Arlo was, how shall I say? Getting a lot of attention from the ladies!!

Now the WI ladies love Harry, but today I think judging from the attention Arlo is getting from them he has a rival!!

If you remember when Harry was seriously unwell and in hospital the WI Ladies visited him everyday and gave him one of their 'care bear' teddies.

Even today Harry still has that teddy and every night it sits on his bedside cabinet and he's probably going to kill me for saying this, but in the daytime it's tucked up under the quilt with his head on Harry's pillow! (Love you Harry!)

Anyway, the lads were serving and chatting to the old Biddies, who were all in good spirits and very 'touchy feely' if you know what I mean!

Even Pat was smiling and enjoying the attention....

The dinner service was over and the ladies left after leaving the normal 'tip' envelope for Harry and the lads at reception......

£655.00 tip!!! Bloody hell!!!

And a message on the envelope saying "thank you lads! You made us old ladies very happy"

Harry opened it and gave £130 each to Pat and Aaron and the rest to Arlo....

Pat asked why Harry gave the money to Arlo and not took any themselves?

Harry explained that the tips he gets from the WI ladies he always donates to Arlo's charity...

To Pat and Aaron's credit they handed their tips to Arlo....

I liked that to be honest.... it was nice to see.....very thoughtful.

Staff evening meal called and it was so nice seeing Leo and Billy at the dinner table!!

Aj was on reception duties....

Dylan was concerned that John, Henry and Ethan were missing?

I was just ringing John's mobile when the 3 of them walked in.

Dylan told them to sit down but Henry said they need a shower first as they don't like sitting at the dining table in dirty work clothes.

They went off to have a shower after Dylan telling them he will keep their dinners warm....

They came back about 20 minutes later all nice and clean...

Ethan asked if he could speak to me later?

I told him to come to my flat later about 7.30pm as I have a massage booked with Tom soon.

7.30pm.....

Ethan arrived...

He was wearing tee shirt, shorts and sliders!!!

Dylan made us all a cappuccino.

Ethan said he had done some research and told me that when the storage unit goes 24/7 we should increase our charges compared to the other storage units but undercut them by £10 a month.

He also said he thinks it would be a good idea to keep the present occupiers at the same price they are paying now, for the next 3 months unless they want 24/7 access.

He then showed me a draft letter that he had written explaining about the 24/7 access and the price increase, if applicable, that he wants to send to the present occupiers. It also introduced himself as the new 'Manager' and the new retail unit selling items for all there storage needs.

I was impressed with the letter

It was very well written.

I complimented him on the letter and told him he can send it out....

He then told me that Arlo and Aaron helped him compose the letter...

John is installing the new CCTV tomorrow and Ian is coming with all his tools to make the outside look nice. And Adam and Sebastian are painting all the walls....

He then asked if he could purchase a coffee making machine for the customers and staff as instant coffee is horrid!

After Ethan left Pat paid me a visit.....

His late mums solicitors want to see him tomorrow afternoon to discuss his mum's will and testament.

They told him that I was the "Executor named in the will, making me legally responsible for managing her estate, assets, property, money and ensuring her wishes are carried out and distributing remaining inheritance to him."

Obviously I knew i was, as a couple of weeks before her death she asked me too.

I saw Pat getting a bit upset so I got him to lay across my lap and I massaged his head, like I do to Harry...

He cried......

He told me how much he misses her, but "she's in no more pain now, so thats good"

Merv then knocked on the door and Dylan let him in.

He saw Pat was upset and told us he will take him back to the staff quarters and put him to bed and cuddle him.....

Pat smiled at him.....

He got up, kissed Merv on the cheek and they left my flat holding hands.

True love I think!

After Pat and Merv left, their was another knock on the door!!

Bloody hell....

Like St Pancras Station here tonight!!

It was Aj in full staff uniform...

He apologised for knocking so late but he has just finished handing over to Simon our night man.

Dylan asked if he wanted a cuppa... Aj hesitated at first saying he didn't want to really interrupt my evening....Dylan told him he was just making a cuppa anyway

I told him to sit down and Dylan went to make the drinks.

Aj asked how the storage unit was going and whether Ethan will be staying their?

I knew where this conversation was going and what Aj was hinting at....

He told me that Billy has told him that if Ethan stays at the storage unit, their will obviously be a vacancy on reception and that he should apply for it!!

I told him that Billy is correct, he should advertise the position internally in case one of the other lads is interested?

I saw Aj's head and shoulders lower and could see he didn't expect that?

I then told him that he had the advantage as he would then have experience of working reception and Billy didn't have to train anybody else, for scratch.....

I then added that nobody else, as far as I know, has expressed an interest in the job.

Then another knock on the bloody door!!!

Dylan let Liam in..who was wondering where Aj was?

Liam was dressed in just shorts and a trainer and hopped in on his crutch......

Dylan made Liam a cuppa and me and Aj continued with our conversation.

Aj was really worried about this as he says he loves working reception, making decisions, greeting guests etc etc.

I couldn't reassure him anymore as reception is now Billy's forte and I'm not going to interfere with Billy's way of doing things....

Next morning.....

I decided to go to the storage unit.

Ethan was already their with what looked like boxes of stock ready to be displayed and sold.

John was fixing the new CCTV cameras and other security devices.

Adam and Sebastian was painting the walls!!!

Unbeknown to Ethan but I ordered a new hot drink machine for the unit which was coming soon....

About 30 minutes later it arrived and the delivery guys started installing it!!

Ethan was over the moon with it and he has a lovely smile on him....

We saw a few people coming into the unit and Ethan introduced himself to them and gave them the letter he had produced about the 24/7 extension to the hours etc.

Out of the 6 people that came Ethan had managed to convert them to the 24/7 contracts at the start of next month.. well done Ethan.

John came back in and done something with the CCTV monitor before he asked me and Ethan to follow him...

We went outside to the main gates and I saw a numeric keypad with key fob scanner.

John tapped in a 4 digit number and put a key fob to the scanner and the gate opened automatically!

We then walked to the front door and John again tapped a number in and put the key fob to the scanner and the front door unlocked itself.

I was happy with that and John then told us to go back to the office.

He then tapped the CCTV keyboard and rewound it to show us entering the front gates and the front door!

He then phoned the hotel and spoke to Aj, which was on speakerphone.....

Aj told him that the new monitor John installed in reception this morning is blinking a red light? John told him to look at the monitor and press 'Enter'.

Aj laughted and said that he could see us entering the front gates and the front door! John had linked the storage CCTV so the hotel reception can see who's entering the storage unit after hours. Aj then said that he can also see 6 other camera views off all the corridors and the loading bay?

I was well pleased with what John had installed!

We celebrated with a cup of cappuccino from the new coffee machine!

Each storage customer has a different numeric number and fob and the computer can print out who's arrived and departed after business hours.

Joe phoned me......

I need to spend more money on the businesses or lose it to the tax man!!!

I'm in the fortunate position that the Flowery, the Business Centre and now the storage units as well as the hotel are "cash cows" and earning me big money!!

Wow!!!

So....I have to spend money on the businesses or I give it to the government?

No brainer really........

When he told me the figures I need to spend per business ....I had to sit down!!!

Joe told me the storage unit would be easy.....buy a couple of new vans to 'rent out' on an hourly/daily basis so customers can transport their goods from and too the storage units.

The Flowery, get it too pay 'rent' to the hotel and upgrade the equipment.

The Business Centre is a little bit more difficult.....

The obvious thing to do is extend again!!

The hotel.....Leo has a few things planned....

I stopped Joe talking and asked him what he meant "Leo has a few things planned?"

Joe laughted and told me to ask him!

Right then.....

I need to hold urgent meetings!

A hotel Directors meeting.

The Flowery Directors meeting

The Business Centre Directors meeting

And a meeting with Ethan at the storage unit

Joe then told me that the 'upgrades' we are making to the storage unit, like the CCTV system, new locks and new security system takes a good percentage of the money I needed to spend. I also needed to make sure that the storage unit pays for John, Henry, Adam, Sebastian and Ian's time and services.

Joe also suggested that I buy another car for the hotel spending at least £50,000!

Jesus bloody wept!!

Joe is worth every penny that I pay him!!

Think I'm going to be in meeting for the next couple of days!!!

I went back to hotel wondering what car I should buy!!!

I've always fancied a Bentley continental GT.......

I phoned my car dealer mate!!

I saw Henry.....

Told him that we need to extend the staff flats again, so can he have a think.

Leo asked me why I was so happy?

(Am I always grumpy then Leo?)

I explained what Joe told me....

Leo told me to "wait a minute" and went into the office.....

He came back with some building plans in his hand!!

The little bugger already had planning permissions to not only extend the hotel but for more staff flats......

I fucking love you Leo!!!

I asked if their was anything else I should know about?

He put his finger to his nose and told me "I'll tell you, if and when the time is right!"

I think I now have a "love-hate" working relationship with Leo!

I then asked if their was any other activities that the Hotel could supply the guests or functions?

Merv was in reception and heard me talking.......

He then told me that one of his and Liam's ex fellow squaddies has started up a 'Laser Clay shooting' business and is looking for a permanent base to work from?

"He has all the equipment and he runs Family Fun Days, Corporate Events, Corporate Parties, Private Parties, Birthday Parties, Festivals & Fayres, Corporate Team Building and many more"

Leo looked at me and I looked at him.

Merv then said that his mate was looking for some investment into his new business as he's running it from home and offering a mobile service where he uses his clients grounds.

Aj then suggested "wedding guests? The WI? Corporate parties?...I like the sound of that...."

Arlo, being the nosey bugger that he is overheard as well and him and Aaron came out of his office....

"What a good idea!! I like that...I think with some good marketing campaigns we could make that work"

I asked Merv to get in contact with his mate and ask him to contact me. Book him for next Saturday if he's available so we can see whats what

Later that evening just after evening meal, I was in my flat thinking about how to spend the money Joe said I have too spend!!

Dylan was dead set against the Bentley!!

Then a knock on the door.....

It was Liam and Merv.....

Both dressed in shorts, tee shirt and sliders....well Liam in one slider! (Sorry Liam)

Dylan went and made the cappuccinos.

Liam started asking me about this Laser Clay Shooting business ran by one of his ex team squaddies "cuckoo"

Cuckoo?

Liam told me that was his nickname as he was his squads 'sniper'. He was a marksman!!

His real name is Barnaby..

Liam hasn't seen him since he was medically discharged due to the 'incident'

Merv said he has seen Barnaby recently, but didn't tell Liam..... as he hasn't seen him since he started working here....

I didn't know that this Barnaby was ex services and didn't know he was part of Liams squad?

I asked Liam if he was ok with all this?

Liam said he would like to see him again as they were a 'close team'

Merv then said that he has invited 'cuckoo' for a drink tonight, after asking Liam earlier if he was ok with seeing him again....... he went on to say that Barnaby is interested in what I have to say and he is keen to get help with his business.

Barnaby was coming at 8.00pm....

Liam said that Merv will meet him in reception and then take him to my flat first as it will be an emotional meeting to start off with. Then we can meet in the bar?

I got a message from Aj on reception that Liam, Merv and their guest are now in the bar.

I wondered down and found them sitting at a table in the corner.

I walked over and on seeing me all 3 of them stood up and Liam introduced me to Barnaby aka 'cuckoo'. We shook hands and I found a glass of brandy waiting for me....

I then saw lovely Harry come into the bar with his heated trolley...

He had made pizzas for the lads and bar guests and was handing them out!

He got to the table we were sitting on and offered us a whole pizza to share.

We agreed a cheese and tomato one would be nice....

I started the conversation off, between eating a pizza slice, and asked Barnaby how he got his nickname 'cuckoo'?

Barnaby looked at Liam, who nodded and then he told me it was because he used to hide up trees in disguise and if an enemy's head popped up he took the necessary 'action to eliminate the threat'

Wow!!

He then went on to tell me that he came out of the army nearly 2 years ago and found that nobody would employ him as he had no other skills than being a 'sniper' and didn't want to be a security man or policeman.

Barnaby was, I estimated about 25 years old, about 5'10' and of average build....compared to Liam and Merv he wasn't what I would call a typical build or statue of a soldier.

As he was only skilled in shooting he thought that running his own 'laser clay shooting' business would suit him down to the ground.

He's a mobile events company who visits hotels, clubs, parties with his equipment.....

He charges £250 a day for 25 people and gives them 5 hours of shooting.

He admitted he would love to have his own 'shooting site' that he could invite clients to come to him, with a purpose built arena with on site bar, food etc etc.

He then handed me a glossy brochure of his company with pictures of his electronic shotguns etc

I must confess I was impressed.

He admitted having his own 'arena' he could move the clays and have 'static targets' etc

I liked his thinking!

The more Barnaby was saying the more I was interested.

I saw Arlo and Aiden sitting in the bar and I called Arlo over.

Liam introduced Barnaby to him...

I showed Arlo the brochure that I had and Arlo thought it was good. I then asked him "if we had a shooting arena here in the grounds, out the back, and advertised it as something we could offer our guests, wedding parties, corporate events etc do you think it could work and do you think you could work your magic on the marketing side?"

Arlo asked Barnaby to explain what he meant by a arena?

When Barnaby said it could involve static shooting at "pop up targets behind trees and made up buildings instead of just shooting the clays in the air" Arlo immediately replied "thats bloody great! I like that, in fact I like that a lot!"

I saw the smile on Barnaby"s face appear....

Liam and Merv both looked at me....

"Ok Barnaby, I said, what do you need and if I can sort it out for you what business arrangement or incentive are you willing to offer me and the hotel?"

Merv laughted, looked at Barnaby and said..."told you, he doesn't beat about the bush!"

Barnaby was coming over as a nice level headed young man who knew what direction he wanted his business to go......

I decided he was going to be a hard cookie to negotiate with so I will watch my step to see if I can get any vibes on any weak spots he has!

I need to think seriously about this....

I needed to have an indepth conversation with Arlo and Ian and Leo....

It was agreed that Barnaby comes back tomorrow in the daytime so we can see the field/grounds the hotel has at the back and see if Ian can help us.

I looked at his accounts that he kindly supplied....

He done 121 events last year bringing in a total income of £30,250.

He then had his travelling expenses etc etc

After his deductions, he would earn more working here at the hotel !!

Merv asked if him, Liam and Barnaby could use the gym tomorrow before our meeting?

Barnaby has a 'booking' on Saturday so he suggested he brings his equipment tomorrow to show me and set it up so the lads can all have a go....he also said he can stay all day so everybody can have a go or more goes if they like?

BUT HE MADE A CONDITION!!!

Cheeky little sod!!!

He says he has heard about the lovely meals that staff get so he will stay all day if he can use the gym, get fed and watered throughout the day and has evening meal as well!

I laughted and told him that he's a cheeky little fucker and I suppose he wants paying the £250 as well!!!!

He nodded saying "of course, it's a booking!"

Definitely a cheeky fucker!!

But I liked him, liked his humour and his business acumen.....

Lewis came in on his crutches with Nathan...both smiling....

He had just been in too see Tom for his excerise treatment and is doing really good. Tom is pleased with his progress.

Lewis looked at the table we were sitting on and he kind of done a 'double take'?

Barnaby noticed and also done a 'double take'

Liam noticed and asked Barnaby if he knows Lewis?

Barnaby said his face looks familiar but doesn't know him as such?

Lewis hopped over on his crutches and apologised for interrupting and asked Barnaby if he was "the shooting man?"

When Barnaby replied "yes laser clay shooting", Lewis smiled..."you put on a shooting event at my fire station's family and friends get together"

Lewis then made it known how great it was, and how much he enjoyed the day! Even though he was totally useless!

I think that remark made me more determined to get involved in Barnaby's business....
