I knew when I heard the sickening sound. And the multiple screams that instantly followed.

I turned and walked back to the corner.

I saw.

Sheer unimaginable horror !

Dan had gone …..

…………………… just like that!

My soul went through a shredder and the shards evaporated instantly.

The shell of me stood petrified like I had become a part of the street furniture.

A hundred billion thoughts collided in my mind.

One stood out.

I didn’t exist in Dan’s known life.

Dan was to all who knew him straight. To enter his life posthumously would have been to out him. And that could only be his choice. One he could not make now.

There was nothing I could do to change that event.

The kindest thing I could do was to go …. vanish from that gastly scene.

All I was was numb.

I turned back, to walk in the other direction.

The one that I was going in before that unthinkable noise, that unimaginable turn of fate.

I felt like a robot.

It was all I could do to put my right foot in front of my left. And walk.

Back towards my car.

Back to my earlier life.

But it could never be the same … my life before Dan.
