Chapter Thirty-Nine

By the time I carried the supplies back inside, the light outside had faded into a soft, twilight navy. The air in the kitchen was cold, but lighting the wood-burning stove soon filled the cottage with a steady, crackling heat.

For months in London, dinner had been an exercise in convenience—hurried room-service orders at late-night firm meetings, or silent, pre-packaged meals eaten across the island counter from Sam while both of our eyes remained glued to corporate laptops.

Tonight, I wanted to cook. Really cook.

I opened the paper bags of fresh produce I had bought in Lyme Regis earlier that morning. I set out a bundle of fresh wild mushrooms, garlic cloves, thick slices of crusty sourdough, a wedge of aged Dorset cheddar, and a splash of double cream.

The process was slow and sensory. I chopped the garlic finely, listening to the sharp, satisfying crack of the blade against the wooden board. I tore the mushrooms by hand—earthy and firm—and dropped them into a cast-iron skillet with a generous knob of butter. The immediate sizzle filled the kitchen, releasing a warm, rich aroma that immediately made the cottage feel lived-in and whole.

While the mushrooms softened and browned, I stepped over to the living room table, picked up my new phone, and brought it back to the kitchen counter.

I leaned back against the edge of the stove, stirring the pan with one hand while tapping the screen with the other.

I opened the messaging app first. Evelyn’s text was still sitting there, warm and reassuring. I typed out a quick, sincere response:

Julian: Thank you, Evelyn. Truly. It means more than I can say to know you understand. I’m safe, I’m okay, and I’m finding my feet down here. Please take care of yourself.

Next was Sam. I took a slow breath, letting go of any lingering urge to justify myself or re-hash eight years of quiet misalignment. I kept it brief, clear, and kind:

Julian: I’m sorry for leaving so abruptly, Sam. It wasn't fair to vanish, but I needed to break the cycle. I’m doing okay down here. Thank you for checking on me, but we both know going back isn't an option. I hope you and your boyfriend are well too.

Sending both felt like closing heavy oak doors—not with a slam, but with a firm, quiet click.

With the messages sent, I closed the app. Sitting alone at the counter while the mushrooms finished simmering in the garlic cream, a new, unfamiliar thought struck me. For weeks, I had been focused entirely on escaping London, turning inward, and building an isolated sanctuary. But meeting Arthur at the woodshop had sparked a quiet realization: I didn't want to live like a hermit on the headland forever. I wanted to start building a life here.

I opened the App Store on the fresh phone.

Browsing through the local lifestyle section, I came across an app called Meetup—along with a regional Dorset community platform designed for local interest groups, trail walking, coastal conservation, and timber craft workshops.

I downloaded the app and took a few minutes to set up a basic, sparse profile. No corporate headshots, no titles, no mention of legal partnerships or firm hierarchies. Just Julian, based near Lyme Regis, interested in woodworking, coastal walking, and local history.

Browsing through the upcoming local events, a few caught my eye: a weekend trail walk along the Jurassic Coast, and an informal evening gathering for local artisans and restorers in a nearby village pub.

The chime of the timer interrupted my scrolling. I locked the phone and set it down.

I toasted two thick slices of sourdough over the stove grid, spooned the creamy, garlic-infused mushrooms generously over the top, and finished it with a sprinkle of fresh sea salt and black pepper.

I sat down at the small timber dining table by the window, eating by the soft glow of a single lamp. The food was rich, hot, and comforting, but the best part was the quiet satisfaction settling in my chest.

I was no longer just running away from an old life. I was actively beginning to build a new one.

Chapter Forty

The autumn mist still clung to the limestone cliffs when I parked the Land Rover at the edge of the trailhead near Golden Cap. The air was sharp with the scent of damp bracken and salt, carrying that particular, bracing chill that announced the transition deep into October.

A week had passed since I downloaded the community app and sent those final, grounding texts to Evelyn and Sam. In that time, the cottage had transformed from a temporary refuge into a true home; the porch bench I had restored with Arthur’s help sat sturdy and gleaming beside the front door, catching the morning light. But today was a different kind of step—one that pulled me out from behind the quiet security of the headland and back toward the world.

When I reached the designated meeting post by the old stone stile, the rest of the hiking group had already gathered. There were eight of us in total—a balanced mix of men and women of varying ages, bound together by sensible boots, weatherproof jackets, and a mutual willingness to brave the coastal wind.

Among them were two people in their mid-twenties—a man of twenty-four named Toby and his twenty-five-year-old friend, Chloe, both wearing practical fleeces and carrying slightly overstuffed backpacks—accompanied by an energetic, silver-haired woman in her fifties named Brenda, who introduced herself as the group’s unofficial route-leader.

"Right then," Brenda said, checking her watch and flashing a welcoming grin that crinkled the corners of her eyes. "Looks like we’re all here. Welcome, everyone. For those of you new to the Saturday coastal stretch, we’re heading up toward Langdon Hill and looping back down through the woods. Stick together on the ridge—the wind likes to catch you unawares up there."

As the group began to string out along the winding dirt path, moving single-file through the thicket of gorse and stunted oak, I found myself walking near the back alongside Toby, while Chloe chatted animatedly with Brenda upfront about local fossil beds.

"You live down here full-time, or just visiting?" Toby asked, adjusting the strap of his pack as we hit the initial, steady incline of the trail.

"Full-time, as of recently," I replied, matching his pace. The earth beneath my boots felt firm and alive. "Moved down from London a few weeks ago."

Toby whistled softly, his breath pluming in the cool air. "Big change. What made you make the jump? Let me guess—corporate burnout?"

I couldn't help a faint, genuine laugh. In London, admitting to burnout felt like revealing a fatal flaw, a crack in the armor that would be exploited at the next quarterly review. Here, spoken out loud on a windswept Dorset hill, it felt weightless.

"Something like that," I admitted. "Decided I wanted a quieter pace. Less glass towers, more open space... but also treading a path of self-discovery."

"Fair enough," Toby said easily, pointing ahead toward the ridge where the grey expanse of the English Channel suddenly opened up beneath us. "By the way, that's Chloe up there," he added, nodding toward his friend. "She's twenty-five, I'm twenty-four—we've been mates since secondary school and both ended up working remotely back down this way."

"It's great you two have kept in touch," I said with a genuine smile.

?"Yeah," Toby grinned, stepping over a mossy tree root. "My dad’s an accountant in Bournemouth. Always talks about chucking it all in to buy a boat and sail to the Azores. Never does, though."

"It's hard to step away from what's familiar," I said softly, watching the white crests of the waves rolling far below. "Even if what's familiar is wearing you down."

"Yeah, well," Toby said, looking back at me. "You look a lot less stressed than most of the adults I talk to, so whatever you did, it's working."

His casual acceptance hung in the air, uncomplicated and entirely free of judgment. There was no unspoken subtext, no probing about my family name, my law firm, or my wedding. I was just Julian, walking a Dorset ridge on a Saturday morning.

?When we reached the crest of the hill, the wind hit us with a sudden, exhilarating rush, whipping our jackets and forcing us to lean slightly into the gale. Brenda called a brief halt to regroup, handing out flasks of tea and sharing a packet of homemade flapjacks.

I stood beside Chloe and Toby, looking out over the magnificent sweep of Lyme Bay, feeling the cold air fill my lungs. My phone hummed quietly in my pocket—a message from Leo asking how I was doing—but I didn't reach for it right away. Didn't feel the need to, being I was around new people. I would respond later.

For the first time in my life, I didn't need to escape the present moment to find peace. The past was quiet, London was a distant hum across the M3 corridor, and the ground beneath my feet was entirely my own.

Chapter Forty-One

As the trail curved back inland through a quiet grove of silver birch, the sharp sea wind died down, replaced by the soft crunch of autumn leaves underfoot. The hiking group had naturally stretched out again, with Brenda taking the lead alongside a quiet couple near the front, leaving Toby, Chloe, and me walking together in a comfortable cluster.

Now that we were out of the wind, I began to pick up on subtle details I hadn't noticed on the initial climb up Golden Cap.

Toby was talking about his recent move back from Bristol, but every few paces, his eyes would dart sideways to Chloe. Chloe, in turn, would catch his gaze, her lips twitching with a suppressed, knowing smile. They didn't just walk side by side—they moved with the practiced synchronicity of two people who had shared an unspoken language for years.

"So, Julian," Chloe said, stepping over a patch of exposed tree roots with easy grace. "Toby mentioned you moved down from London a few weeks back. Are you staying right in Lyme Regis, or further up on the headland?"

"Up near the headland," I replied, pulling my hands into the pockets of my wax jacket. "A small cottage overlooking the bay."

Chloe glanced at Toby. Toby offered a swift, barely perceptible nod. It was a micro-interaction—a tiny flicker of eye contact—that lasted less than a second, yet it was so loaded with silent communication it was almost audible.

My heartbeat quickened with nervous palpatations.

They're mentally conversing, I realized with a sudden, quiet amusement. Coming up with a plan.

"That headland stretch is beautiful," Chloe continued, her tone entirely innocent, though the mischievous spark in her eyes betrayed her. "Quiet, though. Can get a bit isolated if you don't know many people down here yet. We actually host a small pub quiz team on Thursday nights at The Pilot’s Rest in town. Nothing crazy—just a few of us, a round of chips, and terrible trivia."

Toby immediately chimed in, picking up his cue without a single hitch. "Yeah, we’re short on general knowledge, to be honest. Chloe’s great on pop culture and marine biology, but anything history or legal related, we completely fall apart." He looked at me, raising an eyebrow with practiced charm. "You wouldn't happen to know anything about history or law, would you?"

I couldn't help a low, genuine laugh. Their synchronized pitch was so obvious, yet entirely endearing.

"I might know a thing or two," I admitted, a warm smile spreading across my face. "Though I’m trying to keep the legal knowledge to a minimum these days."

Chloe smiled brightly, sharing another quick, triumphant look with Toby that clearly meant Got him.

"No work talk required," she promised, crossing her heart playfully. "Strictly pub chips, bad beer, and arguing over 80s music. We’d love it if you came along. You can even bring your partner if they're around."

The casual, lighthearted offer hit me with a sudden wave of quiet warmth. They didn't know the complex wreckage I had left behind in London, nor did they care. To Toby and Chloe, I wasn't a runaway lawyer or a disgraced groom—I was just a new neighbor who looked like he could use some local friends.

"I’d really like that," I said, feeling a genuine lightness in my chest that had been absent for years. "Count me in for Thursday."

Toby grinned, slapping my shoulder gently as the trail began to open up toward the car park below. "Brilliant. You won't regret it—unless we come dead last, which is highly probable."

As we walked the final stretch together, my phone gave another quiet buzz in my pocket. This time, as I walked alongside my two new friends under the crisp afternoon sky, I didn't feel any lingering weight from the past—only the quiet, exciting promise of the future taking root.

Chapter Forty-Two

By the time the hiking loop concluded at the trailhead car park, the late afternoon sun was beginning to dip below the ridge, turning the coastal sky a soft shade of dusky lavender. Brenda gave everyone a hearty wave goodbye as the group dispersed, leaving Toby, Chloe, and me standing by the tailgate of my Land Rover.

"Well," Toby said, stamping his boots against the gravel to dislodge the mud. "That was a proper trek. My legs are going to hate me tomorrow."

"Oh, stop complaining," Chloe laughed, pulling off her woollen hat and shaking out her hair. "You spent half the walk trailing at the back."

I looked between the two of them, feeling a warm, spontaneous impulse that I wouldn't have dared entertain a month ago. "If you two aren't in a rush to head home, the cottage isn't far. I've got a hot kettle, some beer in the fridge, and enough local bread and cheese to make a decent spread."

Chloe’s eyes lit up instantly. "Julian, you are an absolute savior. I would sell Toby for a proper hot cup of tea right now."

"Hey!" Toby protested, though a broad grin broke across his face. "Lead the way, Julian. We're right behind you."

Ten minutes later, the dark blue Land Rover and Toby’s mud-spattered hatchback pulled up the winding gravel driveway of the headland cottage. As we stepped onto the porch, Toby paused, running his hand appreciatively over the smooth, golden grain of the oak bench beside the door.

"Nice restoration work," Toby remarked, leaning down to inspect the joinery. "Solid oak, salt-sealed?"

"I had some help from Arthur down at Holloway & Son," I said, unlocking the front door. "Sanded it down and re-oiled it a few days back."

Inside, the cottage was cold, but within minutes I had the wood-burning stove roaring, filling the small open-plan living room with a crackling warmth. I set out a wooden board piled with thick slices of crusty sourdough, aged Dorset cheddar, chutneys, and a couple of cold local ales alongside a freshly brewed pot of tea.

We settled into the living room—Chloe curling up on one end of the worn leather sofa, Toby stretching his legs out by the fire, and me sinking into the armchair across from them.

As we ate, the conversation flowed with an easy, unforced rhythm. Without the distraction of the wind and the trail, I got to see their dynamic up close. They had known each other since primary school, grew up three streets apart in nearby Bridport, and had navigated university, breakups, and career missteps side by side.

"Toby’s completely useless in a crisis," Chloe offered with a smirk, slathering chutney on a piece of cheese. "When our uni house flooded in second year, he literally stood on a chair trying to save his PlayStation while the water was up to our ankles."

"I was prioritizing essential assets!" Toby shot back, laughing into his bottle of ale. "And who fixed the plumbing when the landlord ghosted us? Exactly."

Watching them banter, I felt a quiet envy—not out of bitterness, but out of admiration for how unburdened their bond was. There was no posturing, no hidden expectations. Just genuine, long-standing affection.

As the dusk settled into deep evening outside, the food was polished off, and a comfortable, relaxed haze filled the room.

Out of thin air, Toby sat up straight, a sudden, mischievous glint in his eye as he set his empty bottle down on the hearth.

"Right," Toby announced, rubbing his hands together. "We need a proper icebreaker before Thursday’s pub quiz. Let's play KCP."

Chloe paused mid-sip of her tea, rolling her eyes with a fond laugh. "Oh God. Toby, we’re not nineteen in a uni kitchen anymore."

"What’s KCP?" I asked, looking between the two of them with an amused, curious brow.

"Kiss, Command, or Promise," Toby explained eagerly, leaning forward against his knees. "It’s like Truth or Dare, but better. You pick one: Kiss means a quick cheek-peck or affectionate gesture, Command is a light dare, and Promise means you have to make a genuine, honest pledge about something in your life. No copping out."

Chloe looked over at me, her expression softening into a warm, reassuring smile. "It's completely harmless, Julian. But if Toby tries to make you do something ridiculous, we veto it."

I leaned back in the armchair, feeling the steady heat of the woodstove against my shoulders. A week ago, the idea of playing a parlor game with two people I’d just met would have sent my anxiety spiking. But looking at Toby and Chloe in the cozy, amber light of the cottage, I felt entirely safe.

"Alright," I said with a faint, daring smile. "Who goes first?"

Both Toby and Chloe looked at each other, looked at me and said in perfect unison, "You."

Chapter Forty-Three

The declaration hung in the warm, wood-scented air of the living room like a friendly challenge. Toby and Chloe sat grinning at me, their eyes sparkling with mischief in the amber glow of the stove.

I leaned back into the armchair, folding my hands over my knee to hide the faint tremor in my fingers. In my old life, playing a game like this with relative strangers would have sent my pulse spiking into panic. Every question would have felt like an interrogation; every answer, a potential liability.

"Alright," I said, offering a faint, hesitant smile. "Since I'm outnumbered, I'll go first. But I'm treading carefully."

"Wise choice," Chloe laughed softly, curling her legs further under herself on the sofa. "So... Kiss, Command, or Promise?"

I paused, weighing the options in my mind. Kiss felt a bit too bold for a first pick, and a Command from Toby felt like an express ticket to doing something ridiculous on the front lawn in the dark.

"Promise," I chose, deciding it was the safest bet. "A Promise feels grounded."

"A Promise it is," Toby declared, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "Rules are simple for the first round: you make a light, honest pledge about something in your daily life. Nothing heavy yet—we're pacing ourselves."

I took a slow breath, letting the quiet warmth of the cottage settle over me. "I promise... that I will stop treating my morning coffee like a quick caffeine fix and actually sit on the porch bench to drink it every single day, no matter how cold it gets."

Chloe let out an appreciative "Ah," nodding warmly. "That's a proper Dorset promise. Approved."

"Solid start," Toby agreed, raising his beer bottle in a brief toast. "Now, pass it on. Who's next?"

"Chloe," I said immediately, feeling a sudden surge of playful momentum.

The game rolled on from there, starting light and easy. Chloe picked a Command and was forced to deliver her best impression of Brenda navigating a windy ridge, which had all three of us laughing so hard my chest hurt. Toby picked a Kiss and cheekily leaned over to press an exaggerated, loud peck onto Chloe’s temple, earning him a fond shove and a throw pillow to the chest.

Upon watching Toby plant the kiss, a sudden flutter tickled my stomach—a unexpected, sharp jolt that low in my core that caught me entirely off guard. Realizing what was happening, I quickly looked away, leaning over to cough into my hand and clear my throat before anyone noticed.

As the wood in the stove burned down to a deep, pulsing bed of red embers, the room grew quieter, the atmosphere shifting from lighthearted banter into something far richer and more intimate.

By the third round, the stakes naturally deepened.

Chloe picked Promise again, her voice dropping into a softer, more reflective tone as she admitted her fears about setting up her freelance design practice back in Dorset. Toby picked Promise next, pledging to finally have an honest conversation with his father about not following him into accounting.

Then, the focus turned back to me.

"Round three, Julian," Toby said quietly, his tone no longer teasing, but full of genuine, open warmth. "What's it going to be?"

The safe bets were gone now. I looked at the two of them—two people who had welcomed me into their circle without asking for credentials, without judging my past, and without expecting anything in return.

"Promise again... sorry if I'm playing safe," I said softly, though the words carried a weight that felt liberating rather than heavy.

Chloe leaned forward, her grey eyes attentive and kind. "What's your promise, Julian?"

I looked into the crackling fire for a moment, gathering my thoughts, before looking back up at them.

"I promise..." I began, my voice steady and clear, "...that I am done letting fear and other people's expectations dictate how I live my life. I promise to stay right here, in the life I'm building, and actually let myself be happy."

Silence fell over the living room—not an awkward silence, but a profound, reverent hush.

Chloe smiled, a soft, glittering warmth in her eyes, and reached across the space between us to squeeze my hand. Toby gave a single, firm nod of quiet respect.

"That," Toby said softly, "is the best promise of the night."

Knaresborough

This is a novel , and one of the best, totally believable, with three dimensional, sympathetic characters , even the new ones like Toby and Chloe, such is the quality the story telling. Some great prose, I especially enjoyed likening the the satisfaction of a heavy oak door closing slowing and satisfyingly to denote closure of a life problem, and underlying everything, the hint of sexual adventure is never far away when it's often least expected.

Chapter Forty-Four

The game of KCP had started as a playful diversion, but as the embers in the woodstove settled into a low, pulsing bed of heat, the atmosphere in the cottage subtly shifted. The playful barbs and lighthearted laughter gradually gave way to a heavier, more charged stillness.

When it came back around to Toby’s turn, Chloe grinned across the sofa, her grey eyes glinting with a mischievous challenge. "Alright, Toby. No more safe promises. I pick Kiss."

Toby didn't hesitate. He shifted off the floor, crawling across the rug until he was kneeling right in front of the sofa. For a second, the lighthearted teasing faded from his face, replaced by an intense, undeniable focus. He leaned in slowly, giving her all the time in the world to pull back, but Chloe didn't move an inch.

When his lips met hers, the casual camaraderie of the evening evaporated completely. It wasn't a quick, playful peck; it was deep, deliberate, and undeniably hungry. I watched as Chloe’s hand came up to tangle in the thick hair at the nape of his neck, pulling him closer, while Toby’s hand rested firmly on her hip, moving up to hold onto the firm swell of her breast.

Sitting across the room in my armchair, a sudden, searing jolt hit me right in the gut. The casual flutter I’d felt earlier flared into a fierce, concentrated heat that pooled low in my center. I was sporting some serious heat, failing to keep it under control while I watched—it was the hardest it had been since Leo. My breath hitched, and I gripped the armrests of the chair tightly, my knuckles whitening as I stared, transfixed, unable and unwilling to look away. I felt myself heating up and wanted to remove my clothes then and there in front of them.

When they finally broke apart, both of them were breathing slightly heavier, their lips flushed and parted. Toby stayed close, resting his forehead against Chloe’s for a quiet moment before turning his head slowly toward me.

His eyes were dark, heavy-lidded, and electric. Chloe followed his gaze, looking over her shoulder at me from the sofa.

The air in the room felt thick, charged with an intoxicating tension that made my skin prickle. Every inhibition I had carried down from London—every rigid rule, every guardrail I had built to keep myself isolated and safe—dissolved in the space of a single breath. I wasn't just watching them anymore; I was drowning in the sheer, unfiltered desire radiating between the two of them, and the unmistakable way it was shifting to include me.

Chloe stood up slowly from the sofa, her movements unhurried, graceful, and deliberate. She crossed the small gap of the rug, her eyes locked onto mine with a steady, inviting warmth that left no room for hesitation.

Toby rose with her, moving in seamless tandem—that same effortless synchronicity I had noticed on the cliff path, now turned entirely toward me.

Neither of them said a word. Chloe reached the armchair first, her fingers sliding gently under the collar of my shirt, her thumb brushing against the warm skin of my neck as she leaned down and pressed a slow, heated kiss to my mouth.

As she pulled back just enough to let out a soft, appreciative breath, Toby was already there, stepping into the space beside her. His hand slid over and around Chloe’s front, pulling her into him, his lips meeting her nape with a hungry, eager intensity that stole the remaining breath from her lungs.

I couldn't control myself any longer, she left me wanting more. I left the chair and went in for another eager kiss with Chloe, wrapping my arm around her waist. My fingertips brushed against Toby's warm skin, feeling the press of his arms against mine as the three of us pressed together.

The walls of the cottage seemed to fall away, leaving only the heat of the fire, the firm pressure of their hands, and the electric realization that I was no longer running, no longer hiding, and no longer alone.

Chapter Forty-Five

The heat of the room—the press of their skin, the scent of cedar and woodsmoke, the heady, intoxicating permission of a life unspooled—pushed against my chest like a rising tide. For a terrifying, exhilarating second, I let myself fall into it. My hands gripped Chloe’s waist, my fingertips brushed the warm plane of Toby’s side, and the rigid walls I had lived behind for thirty-two years felt as though they were finally, truly crumbling.

And then, like a sudden, freezing gust of wind blowing down from the headland, the air shifted.

A sharp, visceral wave of realization hit me, cutting straight through the haze of arousal. I stopped moving. My hands froze against Chloe’s waist, and my breath hitched not with desire, but with a sickening, heavy drop in my stomach.

What am I doing?

Leo.

The image of Leo flashed behind my eyes—kind, steadfast, patient Leo back in London, holding down the fort while I sorted through the wreckage of my own life. Leo, who had respected my need for space, who had texted me that morning just to check in with gentle affection. We weren't broken up. We hadn't untied that knot. I had come down to Dorset to find myself, not to fracture someone else's trust in the dark of a cottage living room.

The guilt hit me like a physical blow, cold and sharp.

"Stop," I gasped softly, pulling my hands back as though I’d been burned.

I stumbled backward, putting an immediate physical distance between us. Chloe’s eyes widened, confusion and a sudden, quiet hurt flickering across her face. Toby stepped back, his chest rising and falling heavily, looking at me with a mix of shock and bruised desire.

"Julian?" Toby murmured, his voice rough. "What—what's wrong?"

"I can't," I stammered, running a trembling hand through my hair, my skin still flushing with a chaotic mix of leftover heat and sharp, consuming shame. "I’m so sorry. I—God, I'm so sorry."

"Hey, it's okay," Chloe said quickly, her voice softening instinctively as she took a half-step forward, reaching out a hand. "We didn't mean to push anything you weren't ready for—"

"No, it's not you," I interrupted, my voice cracking slightly as I shook my head, backing away toward the hallway stairs. "It's me. I shouldn't have... I’m involved. I have someone. And this—this isn't fair to you, and it's not fair to him."

The silence that settled over the living room was heavy and suffocating. The easy warmth of the evening had vanished, replaced by an awkward, jagged stillness. Toby dropped his arms to his sides, his expression hardening slightly into a guarded, wounded neutrality, while Chloe pulled her knees up on the sofa, wrapping her arms around herself.

"Julian..." Toby started, but I couldn't bear to listen. The guilt was clawing at my throat, demanding an escape, demanding an outlet for the raw, unspent tension still roaring through my veins.

"I'm sorry," I repeated, my voice tight and breathless. "Please... just—give me a minute."

Without waiting for an answer, I turned on my heel, bolted down the hallway, and practically threw myself up the wooden stairs. I didn't care that they were still downstairs in my home, sitting in the wreckage of an evening I had completely derailed. All I knew was the overwhelming, frantic pulse thumping in my temples and the desperate, burning ache between my legs.

I shoved open the door to the upstairs bathroom, slammed it shut behind me, and threw the heavy brass latch.

Leaning forward with both hands braced flat against the cold porcelain of the sink, I stared hard at my reflection in the mirror. My face was flushed, my eyes wide and wild, and my body was humming with a vicious, contradictory mix of guilt and raging, unsatisfied lust.

I need Leo, a dark, panicked voice echoed in my head. I need to be undone. I need to ruin myself.

My hands dropped, trembling violently as I unbuckled my belt and shoved my trousers down, shedding the rest of my clothes in a frantic, uncoordinated heap on the tiled floor. The shame of what I had just done downstairs twisted together with the jagged edge of my arousal, turning into something feverish and feral.

I didn't turn on the overhead light; I only let the pale amber glow of the streetlamp filter through the frosted window glass. Sitting down hard on the closed lid of the toilet, I pulled my phone out with shaking fingers, unlocked the screen, and opened up a browser tab. My thumb moved with frantic, practiced speed, pulling up a video—hard, fast, anonymous—anything to block out the memory of Toby and Chloe's hurt expressions downstairs.

As the audio filled the small, tiled room, I wrapped my hand around myself. It wasn't the slow, healing reclamation of a man finding peace in Dorset. It was punishing, frenzied, and desperate. I stroked myself faster, my breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps as I watched the screen, chasing a release that felt less like pleasure and more like an exorcism.

Downstairs, the cottage was dead silent at first. But in the claustrophobic heat of the bathroom, with my pulse roaring in my ears, I stroked myself into a blind, trembling frenzy, letting out a sharp, ragged cry as I finished. Leaving a messy reminder on the bathroom floor, the hardened urge to act on Chloe and Toby finally began to subside, dragging my frayed composure down with it.

As I caught my breath, I realized with a sickening spike of humiliation that I had been far too loud; through the floorboards, I could hear faint murmurs of conversation and the unmistakable sound of quiet laughter from downstairs. They had heard every second of it.

With shaking hands, I cleaned up, pulled my clothes back on, and forced myself to walk back down the stairs.

When I re-entered the living room, Toby and Chloe were already on their feet by the front door, coats on and waiting. The air between us was thick with awkward residual tension.

"I think we're gonna shoot," Toby said quietly, his expression neutral, though his eyes carried a heavy, complicated weight. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small scrap of paper, and laid it gently on the entryway table. "If you want to remain in touch... I noted my number down for you."

Chloe offered a small, sad, but entirely forgiving smile, keeping her distance as she slipped out the door behind him.

I stood alone in the hallway, staring at the slip of paper on the table as the front door clicked shut, leaving me in the quiet, echoing silence of the cottage.

I agree and the fact that Julian could break away in the heat of the moment shows that the author is showing the true character of his subjects.

Chapter Forty-Six

The click of the front door latch echoed through the silent cottage like a gunshot.

I stood paralyzed in the entryway, staring at the slip of paper Toby had left on the table. My skin felt clammy, my hands were still shaking, and the cold reality of what had just transpired washed over me in sickening, relentless waves.

What have I done?

The shame was overwhelming. I had dragged two well-meaning people into my own emotional wreckage, humiliating myself in the process, and almost destroyed the one relationship that had held me together when everything else crumbled. I hadn't just made a mistake; I had nearly blown up my entire life on a impulse driven by panic and suppressed desire.

I didn't wait. I couldn't let another minute pass with this poison sitting in my throat.

Pulling my phone from my pocket with trembling fingers, I tapped Leo’s name and pressed the phone to my ear.

It rang once. Twice. Three times. Every second felt like an eternity, my heart hammering against my ribs until the line finally clicked open.

"Julian?" Leo’s voice came through the speaker, warm and slightly tired, accompanied by the faint, comforting background noise of his London flat. "Hey. I was wondering how the hike went."

Hearing his voice—so steady, so entirely untainted by the mess I had just created—made my throat lock up completely. A tight, shuddering breath escaped my lips before I could stop it.

"Leo," I managed, my voice breaking. "Leo, I... I need to talk to you. I’ve made a huge mistake."

There was a sudden, sharp pause on the other end of the line. The background noise seemed to drop away as Leo immediately tuned in to the distress in my tone. "Julian? What’s wrong? Are you hurt?"

"No, I'm... physically I'm fine, but I..." I gripped the edge of the hallway table, leaning heavy against it as the words spilled out of me in a desperate, unfiltered rush. "I met some people from the hike today. A guy and a girl, Toby and Chloe. I brought them back to the cottage for food and a drink... and things got... out of hand."

Silence stretched over the line. Cold, heavy, and absolute.

"What do you mean, out of hand?" Leo asked softly. His voice had lost its initial warmth, flattening into a tone I had never heard from him before—guarded, distant, and carefully measured.

"We were playing a stupid game, and the energy shifted, and... we started kissing," I comfessed, tears finally burning the back of my eyes. "It was the three of us. I let it go too far. I got overwhelmed, and... God, Leo, I stopped it. The second I realized what I was doing, I pulled away and called it off. Nothing more happened, but I let it get there in the first place. I couldn't live with myself for a second without telling you."

The silence on the other end of the phone was agonizing. Seconds dragged into what felt like hours. I could hear Leo breathing—slow, deliberate breaths—processing the confession.

"Leo... please say something," I whispered.

When Leo finally spoke, his voice sounded miles away, stripped of all color and emotion. "I... I appreciate you telling me, Julian. Really. I appreciate the honesty."

"Leo, I am so, so sorry," I pleaded, my knuckles white as I squeezed the phone. "It was stupid, it was reckless, and I hate myself for it. You’ve been so patient with me, and I—I threw it back in your face. Let me fix this. Please. I’ll get in the Land Rover right now. I’ll drive up to London tonight. I'll stay for a few days—as long as you need—so we can talk through this properly."

"No," Leo said quietly. The word wasn't angry; it was entirely withdrawn, wrapped in a protective wall he had built in the space of a single minute. "Don't drive up tonight, Julian."

"Leo, please—"

"I mean it," he interrupted softly, though the distance in his tone was sharper than any raised voice could ever be. "I hear you. I know you're sorry. But I... I can't do this conversation right now. I need some time to process what you just told me."

"I understand," I said hastily, my chest aching with a deep, hollow dread. "I'll do whatever you need. But let me come up tomorrow. Just for a few days. I want to make this up to you, Leo. I'm willing to do whatever it takes."

There was another long pause on the line.

"We'll talk tomorrow," Leo said quietly. "Goodnight, Julian."

Before I could reply, the line went dead.

I pulled the phone away from my ear and stared at the dark screen. The cottage around me was freezing, the fire in the woodstove reduced to gray ash. Standing alone in the dim hallway, the weight of my actions settled squarely on my shoulders, heavier and darker than ever before.

Chapter Forty-Seven

The exhaustion finally dragged me under around three in the morning, pulling me down into a heavy, suffocating sleep.

I was in the Land Rover. The engine was off, idling in the dark somewhere near the edge of a jagged cliff, and the sound of the ocean was deafening. Outside the frosted windows, massive, dark waves reared up out of the blackness, crashing against the rocks with a violent, rhythmic fury that rattled the chassis. The cabin was freezing, but the air felt thick, charged with an intimate heat that had nothing to do with the weather.

Leo was beside me in the passenger seat, though he had shifted sideways, his legs draped over the center console. In the dim, ambient amber glow of the dashboard lights, his face looked impossibly soft, yet his eyes carried an intense, demanding focus.

He didn't say a word. He just reached out, his warm palm sliding under the heavy fabric of my jeans, his fingers wrapping firmly around my hardening length.

A sharp, involuntary groan tore through my throat as his thumb dragged over the tip. The sound echoed in the confined space of the car, blending with the roar of the crashing waves outside.

"Leo..." I breathed, my head falling back against the headrest as another wave of dark, electric pleasure spiked through me.

Leo didn't let up. He shifted lower, his shoulder brushing against the steering wheel as he slid off the seat and onto the floorboards between my legs. The sudden rush of cold air against my skin vanished the second his mouth closed over me.

My hips buckled instinctively. I let out a low, ragged moan, my fingers tangling deep into his hair as he took me in a deep, deliberate stroke. Every barrier I had built, every ounce of guilt from the cottage, dissolved into pure, concentrated sensation. The rhythm he set was relentless, alternating between slow, torturous suction and fierce, desperate heat that made my vision blur.

"Fuck—Leo, please..." I panted, my voice cracking as the pressure built to a blinding peak.

In a fraction of a second, the landscape of the dream shifted, seamless and intoxicating. We were no longer sitting upright; I was pressing him back against the reclining seat, parting his thighs as I settled over him. The friction was immediate, searing, and absolute.

I grabbed his hips, anchoring us together, and drove into him with a harsh, heavy thrust. Leo gasped, his arms coming up to lock tightly around my shoulders, his nails digging into my back as he met every single stroke with equal, frantic hunger. The sound of our skin slapping together echoed over the roar of the ocean outside. We were moving together in a wild, punishing cadence, chasing the edge of a precipice.

The pleasure became a roaring fire in my veins, tightening every muscle in my body.

Closer—

With one final, driving thrust that wrung a loud, ragged cry from my lips, I shattered.

My eyes flew open.

The roar of the ocean vanished, replaced by the suffocating silence of the dark Dorset cottage bedroom. The cold morning air hit my skin, and my lungs heaved in great, ragged gasps.

I wasn't in the car. I was lying tangled in the cold sheets of the bed, entirely alone.

But my body hadn't caught up to reality. My cock was throbbing violently, stiff and hyper-sensitive against my stomach, caught in the violent aftershocks of the dream. Before I could even reach down, my body took over. With a final, intense spasm, I arched off the mattress, letting out a sharp, breathless gasp as my body climaxed hard in the waking world, shooting heavy, thick ropes of cum across my stomach and into the sheets.

"Fuck, Leo. How do you make me cum even when you're not here?" I whispered, unmoving. But deep down, knowing it wasn't just Leo that did this.

For a long moment, I lay there in the dark, trembling head-to-toe, the sticky warmth of the release cooling rapidly against my skin.

The dream had faded, leaving behind the stark, heavy reality of the empty room, the silent phone on the nightstand, and the wreckage of a phone call waiting for me when the sun came up.

Change of perspective.

-------

Chapter Forty-Eight

Back in London, the flat on the third floor of the Islington conversion was quiet—too quiet. He had not long got in after a long day at work.

As soon as Leo and Julian had finished the phone call, Leo spent the rest of the evening pacing the length of the hardwood floor, the lingering tension still humming uncomfortably in the air like a live wire. When the line had finally clicked dead after Julian’s desperate plea to drive up to London, Leo hadn't moved for several minutes. He had simply stared at his phone screen until it went dark.

“We’ll talk tomorrow.”

The words had tasted like ash in his mouth. He wasn't just angry; he was deeply, fundamentally disoriented.

It had been some time since the quiet ache of Julian’s wedding to Evelyn—a day defined by unspoken desires and that unexpected, shocking kiss in the courtyard of the cathedral, long before any of this became real. But it was only three weeks ago that everything took an unexpected turn and finally exploded between them in that very same cottage in Dorset. Three short weeks since they had first crossed the line into physical intimacy, giving in to the deep sexual connection they had both denied for so long. For about a month and a half total, Julian had been down in Dorset trying to untangle his life, and Leo had tried to be patient, visiting him and heading home after two weeks to provide him space to grow while holding down the fort in London.

And now, after barely three weeks of sharing that intense, newly forged physical bond, Julian had used his time down south to fracture the trust between them in a single evening.

He'd said sorry, but deep down Leo thought about what would happen in another one of his games.

Leo walked over to the kitchen counter, picked up a glass of water, set it back down without drinking, and rubbed the back of his neck. The confession was a physical weight pressing down on his chest. A three-way. Kissing strangers in a rented cottage. The man who had spent years guarding his emotions—who had only just surrendered to Leo's touch three weeks ago—had thrown himself into the arms of two locals the moment the wind blew his way.

Is that all those three weeks meant to him? Leo thought, a cold knot tightening in his stomach. I give him space to figure himself out, and I become a safety net while he explores whatever he actually wants?

Confusion curdled into a sharp, bitter spike of resentment. Julian wanted space? Julian wanted freedom? Fine. But freedom came with a price, and right now, Leo was the one paying it in isolation.

Restless, angry, and feeling entirely unmoored in his own home, Leo reached into his pocket and pulled out his personal phone. He unlocked it with a sharp swipe, his thumb hesitating over the grid of apps before tapping open a dark, discreet icon tucked away in a folder—a hookup application popular with men and women looking for no-strings encounters.

He hadn't opened it since he and Julian had that drive to explore each other and finally become official, or so he thought. But tonight, the protective numbness he had wrapped around himself during the phone call was beginning to crack, and underneath was a searing, chaotic mix of betrayal and raw, unspent arousal. He didn't want to talk. He didn't want to process feelings. He wanted an outlet. He wanted to feel desired by someone who didn't carry Julian's baggage, someone who couldn't hurt him.

Leo set the filter to men, keeping his radius tight to north London, and began scrolling.

Most profiles blurred together—faceless torsos, half-hearted greetings, guys looking for a quick chat. But then his thumb stopped.

A profile caught his eye. No face, just a tight, high-contrast grid photo. It was a shot of a man’s bare arse, perfectly shaped and curved, with heavy, full balls hanging low underneath as he stood with his back entirely to the camera. The lighting cast a sharp shadow across the dim room he was standing in, highlighting the firm, smooth skin and the absolute rawness of the display.

Leo's breath hitched. The heat of it slammed straight into his groin, a violent, reactive jolt that mirrored the anger boiling in his veins.

He tapped the profile. The bio was brief and transactional: Justin, 28. North London. Looking for right now. Discretion guaranteed. Show me what you've got.

Justin. Twenty-eight. Anonymous, available, and miles away from the tangled mess in Dorset.

Without giving himself time to second-guess the impulse—without letting the quiet voice of his conscience remind him that Julian was supposed to come home tomorrow to make things right—Leo tapped the chat icon. He didn't bother uploading a face picture; he sent a clear, unvarnished photo of his own body, cropped at the waist, showing his torso and the firm line of his hips.

The reply was almost instant. A notification pinged at the top of his screen.

Justin: 🔥 Damn. You free tonight?

Leo: Yes.

Justin: My place or yours? I'm near Highbury. Come over.

Leo: Send the address.

Leo locked his phone, dropped it onto the kitchen island, and closed his eyes. His heart was hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs. It was reckless. It was destructive. But as he grabbed his jacket off the back of the chair and headed for the door, he didn't care.

His phone pinged with an address notification from the application. He opened the app and responded:

Leo: Be ten minutes. Be prepared for a rough fuck.

Julian had broken the rules first; tonight, Leo was going to burn the board down.

Chapter Forty-Nine

The drive up through Upper Street and into Highbury took less than ten minutes, but for Leo, every red light felt like a slow-burning fuse. The anger humming in his chest hadn't cooled; if anything, the brief journey had only concentrated it into a hard, sharp edge.

He pulled up outside the Victorian conversion, parked the car with a heavy tug of the handbrake, and took the front steps two at a time.

?When he reached the designated door on the second floor, he knocked—three firm, unhesitating raps.

A moment later, the lock clicked, and the door swung open.

Justin was standing in the doorway, exactly as advertised. He was completely topless, his chest lightly covered in fine hair with a subtle, work-in-progress definition along his abs and shoulders. Lower down, a pair of worn, soft grey sweatpants sat precariously low on his hips—so low they were practically pushed down around the tops of his buttocks in the back, revealing the neatly trimmed line of his pubic area in the front. There was no sign of underwear underneath. He was already half-hard, his body radiating a casual, confident heat.

"You're right on time," Justin began, a smirk forming on his lips. "Come in."

Justin stepped back, leaving the door wide open, inviting Leo into the dim, warm hallway.

Leo took one step across the threshold. The scent of unknown cologne and warm, unfamiliar skin hit him immediately. Justin turned, unbuttoning the top of his sweatpants further as he walked toward the living room sofa, completely at ease, waiting to be taken.

And right there, in the space of a single heartbeat, Leo’s boots froze against the floorboards.

A sudden, violent wave of nausea surged from the pit of his stomach straight up into his chest. The anger that had propelled him out of his flat, down Upper Street, and up these stairs suddenly evaporated, leaving behind a cold, hollow dread.

What the fuck am I doing?

He looked at Justin's back—at the stranger who didn't know his name, who didn't know the weight of the last three weeks, who meant absolutely nothing to him. The realization hit Leo like a physical blow: using this man to punish Julian wouldn't wash away the sting of Dorset. It wouldn't fix the broken trust. It would only drag Leo down into the very same mud he was so furious at Julian for stepping into.

"Hey," Justin called out over his shoulder, turning back with a look of slight confusion when he realized Leo hadn't followed. "You coming?"

Leo stood frozen in the doorway, his hands clenched into tight fists in his jacket pockets. His breath came fast and shallow.

"I can't," Leo said, his voice quiet, flat, and completely stripped of the aggression he had carried five minutes ago.

Justin stopped, his brows knitting together. "What? What do you mean?"

"I'm sorry," Leo managed, his throat tight as he backed up a step out into the carpeted hallway. "I shouldn't have come. This was a mistake."

"Wait, seriously?" Justin said, crossing his arms, a mix of annoyance and disbelief crossing his face. "You messaged me to say you were coming to fuck me, and now you're just backing out?"

"I'm sorry," Leo repeated, unable to offer a real explanation, unable to speak Julian’s name in this stranger’s flat. "I have to go."

Before Justin could reply or argue, Leo turned on his heel, walked briskly down the hallway, and practically bolted down the stairs.

He burst out through the heavy front doors into the cool North London night air, gasping as if he had just escaped a burning building. He hurried back to his car, unlocked it with shaking hands, and threw himself into the driver's seat, slamming the door shut.

Leaning his forehead heavily against the cold curve of the leather steering wheel, Leo let out a long, ragged exhale. His heart was hammering against his ribs, not with arousal, but with the terrifying realization of how close he had come to destroying everything completely out of pure spite.

He didn't start the engine right away. He just sat there in the quiet darkness of Highbury, staring out at the empty street, knowing that the morning was coming—and that he and Julian still had a devastating reckoning waiting for them.

Chapter Fifty

The line went dead, leaving behind a sharp, high-pitched tone that pierced the silence of the cottage like a blade.

I stood frozen in the hallway, the phone still pressed to my ear, staring blindly at the dark wood floor. The coldness in Leo’s voice—the absolute, hollow detachment—was far worse than any shouting or anger could have been. He had shut me out. The wall was up, and I was on the wrong side of it, stranded down here in Dorset with three hundred miles of black asphalt between us.

I can’t wait until morning. I can’t sit in this empty house for another second.

A frantic energy seized me, driving out the lingering fog of exhaustion. I threw my phone onto the table, turned on my heel, and bounded up the stairs two at a time. In the bedroom, I grabbed a duffel bag from the closet, dragging it onto the unmade mattress. My hands were shaking so violently I could barely work the zipper as I threw in whatever clothes were within reach—a couple of shirts, jeans, a heavy jumper, my washbag.

I zipped it shut with a sharp, violent tug, pulled on my coat, and hauled the bag back down the stairs.

Passing the entryway table, my eyes caught the slip of paper Toby had left behind. Guilt spiked through my chest, sharp and fresh, but there was no time to dwell on it. I pulled out my phone, typed in his number, and sent a quick text:

Hey Toby. Really sorry about earlier tonight. I’m heading up to London right now to sort something urgent out. Would you mind keeping an eye on the cottage while I’m away for a few days? Let me know. Thanks, Julian.

I didn’t wait for a reply. I jammed the phone into my pocket, grabbed the Land Rover keys, and stepped out into the biting night air.

The Dorset fog was thick, rolling heavy and wet off the coast, blurring the edges of the dark fields around the property. The Land Rover’s engine roared to life with a heavy, throaty vibration that rattled the steering column. I shoved the gearstick into drive, flipped the headlights onto high beam, and tore down the gravel driveway.

I had no idea what was waiting for me in Islington. For all I knew, Leo was in bed sleeping or sat at his kitchen table with a two-shot espresso thinking about what tomorrow may bring.

All I knew was the overwhelming, desperate need to be near him. To touch his face, to hear him speak to me without that terrible, distant frost in his voice, and to do whatever it took to fix what I had broken.

The winding coastal lanes blurred past in a flash of dark trees and gray stone walls until finally, the tight corners opened up. The tires hummed as I merged onto the long, empty stretch of the M3, the open motorway stretching out into the black night ahead of me.

I pressed down hard on the accelerator, watching the lights of Dorset fade in the rearview mirror, driving blind into the dark toward London.

Chapter Fifty-One

The sharp, sudden double-tap on the passenger window shattered the suffocating silence of the Golf’s cabin.

Leo flinched, his head snapping up from the leather steering wheel. Outside, illuminated by the dim amber glow of the Highbury streetlamp, was Justin. His jacket was zipped up against the night air, but his expression was no longer pissed off or defensive—it was guarded, curious, and intensely focused.

Before Leo could react or hit the central locking button, Justin pulled the handle. The door swung open, bringing in a sharp draft of freezing air, and Justin slid unceremoniously into the passenger seat, pulling the door shut behind him with a heavy latch.

"You've not started the car, so that must mean you're still somewhat interested," Justin said quietly, turning sideways in the seat to look at Leo.

Leo stared at him, his hands still loosely gripping the wheel of the Golf. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Justin, I told you—"

"I know what you said," Justin interrupted gently, his voice smooth and remarkably devoid of malice. "You said it was a mistake. But guys who just make a mistake hit the ignition and pull away. You’ve been sitting out here in the dark for ten minutes."

Leo swallowed hard, his throat tight, but he couldn't form a response. The raw truth of Justin's words hung heavy between them in the confined space of the car.

Justin reached out, placing a warm, steady hand over Leo’s trembling knuckles on the steering wheel. The contrast between the cold leather and Justin's skin sent a strange, electric jolt straight through Leo's arm.

"Look at me," Justin said softly.

Slowly, almost against his will, Leo turned his head to meet Justin’s gaze. In the shadow of the cabin, Justin’s eyes were steady and searching.

"Whoever hurt you tonight," Justin murmured, his thumb rubbing small, deliberate circles over the back of Leo's hand, "they're not in this car. And they're not in my flat. You came out here looking for a way to stop thinking. I can still give you that. No questions, no pressure. Just whatever you need to get out of your own head."

The gentleness of the offer was what nearly broke Leo. He had left Islington armed for a fight, primed to burn everything down in a fit of vengeful rage. But standing in front of him wasn't an adversary—it was a stranger offering a quick, seamless escape from the agonizing weight of Julian's betrayal.

Leo looked down at Justin's hand on his, then back up at Justin's mouth.

The temptation hung in the balance, razor-thin. For a second, Leo’s fingers flexed under Justin’s grip, his body screaming at him to just let go—to lean across the console, pull Justin in, and surrender to the temporary numbness.

Their lips made contact with unhurried force which made them both itch for more.

Then, the quiet memory of Julian’s voice from the phone call flashed through his mind: “I couldn't live with myself for a second without telling you... I'm willing to do whatever it takes.”

Leo backed up, took a slow, painful breath, squeezed Justin's hand once, and gently pulled his arm away, dropping his hand back onto his lap.

"I can't," Leo said, his voice quiet, steady, and finally settled. "I'm sorry, Justin. It's not about you. But if I do this... I become something I don't want to be."

Justin watched him for a long, silent moment. The subtle tension in his shoulders relaxed, and he let out a low, breathy sigh of understanding.

"Fair enough," Justin said softly, nodding once. He reached for the door lever. "Drive home safe, yeah?"

"Thanks," Leo managed.

?"Oh, and I'm here if you change your mind. I'll be ready," Justin said as he stepped out into the night, then pushed the door closed until it clicked.

Leo didn't hesitate this time. He turned the key in the ignition. The Golf’s engine hummed to life, filling the cabin with steady heat and light. As he pulled away from the curb in Highbury and pointed the car back toward Islington, the lingering anger was gone, replaced by a cold, heavy clarity.

He didn't know that Julian was already speeding down the M3 in his Land Rover in the dark, driving flat-out toward North London. But as Leo drove home to his empty flat, he knew one thing for certain: whatever was waiting for them when the sun came up, they were going to have to face it cleanly.

Chapter Fifty-Two

The clock on the Land Rover’s dashboard flicked to 6:00 AM just as I pulled onto the quiet street in Islington. The sky overhead was a bruised, heavy purple, fading slowly into the cold gray of early dawn.

My knuckles were white against the steering wheel, my muscles stiff and aching from hours of pushing flat-out along the M3. I killed the engine, the sudden silence of the cabin wrapping around me like a heavy blanket. Sitting there, looking up at the familiar windows of his third-floor flat, my stomach churned into a tight, sickening knot.

I didn't give myself time to hesitate. If I sat in the car any longer, panic would talk me out of it.

I grabbed my duffel bag from the passenger seat, stepped out into the biting morning air, and took the front steps of the building two at a time. The carpeted hallway inside was dead quiet. When I reached his door, my heart hit my ribs so hard I could barely draw breath.

I raised my hand and knocked—three heavy, unsteady raps.

Silence. Then, the faint sound of footsteps inside. A key turned in the lock, the latch clicked, and the door swung inward.

My breath caught square in my throat.

Leo stood in the doorway, completely unprepared for company. He wore nothing but a pair of white, form-fitting boxers. The pale fabric hugged his hips tightly, accentuating the firm line of his thighs and the unmistakable, heavy bulge at the front of his briefs. His skin was warm and bare, his shoulders broad and broad-set in the dim hallway light, a fine trace of hair running down his chest.

Even in the middle of this absolute disaster, my chest constricted with a familiar, aching appreciation for the sheer presence of him. He looked raw, gorgeous, and entirely exposed.

For several agonizing seconds, Leo just stared at me. His eyes were wide with total surprise, his mouth parted slightly as he processed the sight of me standing on his welcome mat, dark circles under my eyes and three hundred miles of Dorset dust on my boots.

"Julian?" he rasped, his voice thick with sleep and disbelief. "What... what are you doing here?"

"I couldn't stay down there," I said, my voice barely more than a whisper, trembling under the weight of everything. "Not after the phone call. I drove through the night."

Leo’s gaze flicked down to my duffel bag, then back up to my face. The shock on his features slowly hardened, but the cold detachment from the phone was gone, replaced by a dark, simmering intensity. He stepped back into the entry hall, leaving the door open.

"Get inside," he said quietly.

I stepped across the threshold, and the moment the door clicked shut behind me, the air in the flat became suffocatingly thick. The quiet room held a sharp, electric charge—the unsaid words of my confession hanging heavy between us, mingled with the visual shock of Leo standing bare before me.

"Leo, I—" I began, taking an impulsive step toward him.

"Don't," Leo cut in, his voice low and dangerous. He stood just a foot away, his bare chest heaving slightly as his eyes searched mine. "Don't start apologizing yet."

I looked into his dark eyes, seeing the furious struggle tearing through him—the betrayal, the anger, but beneath it all, an undeniable, burning hunger that mirrored my own. Ever since that night at the cottage with Toby and Chloe, ever since the wall between us had shattered, I had craved him with a terrifying, desperate frequency. And seeing him now, stripped down to his skin, vulnerable and furious, shattered whatever control I had left.

"Leo..." I breathed, taking the final half-step between us until the front of my jacket brushed against his bare chest.

He didn't pull back. Instead, a low groan escaped his throat as his hand shot out, his fingers tangling tightly into the fabric of my coat and dragging me forward.

The conversation, the explanations, the long list of apologies—it all dissolved into dust. The moment I had been starving for since Dorset was right here, crashing down on us with the force of an avalanche.

His mouth slammed into mine, hard, bruising, and completely unforgiving.

It’s 150 miles from Lyme Regis to Islington and takes less than 3 hours . The meeting with Chloe and Toby was only the previous evening . These little anomalies spoil the story .. and why is the word ‘ length ‘ used in place of ‘ cock ‘? Seems a bit demure 🤔 Is this written by AI ?

I thank you for your comment, I can say that this isn't written by AI, my georgraphy isn't really my strong point so I do apologise for the lack of knowledge when it comes to distances etc. However, what you don't see or read os what happens off the paper. Did he stop to have sleep due to the distance and tiredness of Julian, did he have another encounter along the way? Who knows! These are things I've left blank and out of the story for your imagination to fill in.

Appreciate the comment of course!

Chapter Fifty-Three

The taste of him was familiar, fierce, and completely suffocating.

There was no grace to it, no gentle reacquaintance. Leo’s mouth moved against mine with a punishing, bruised intensity that made my head spin and my legs go weak. His hand remained fist-clutched in the front of my heavy coat, dragging me through the doorway as his hips pressed hard against mine. Even through the thick denim of my jeans, I could feel the intense, unforgiving ridge of his erection straining against the thin fabric of his boxers.

The duffel bag slid from my fingers, hitting the hardwood floor with a dull thud.

"Leo..." I managed to break off for a fraction of a second, gasping for air, my hands coming up to cup the warm sides of his neck. "Leo, wait—"

"Shut up," he growled against my lips, his voice raw and gravelly. "Just... shut up, Julian."

He shoved me back until the back of my shoulders slammed against the hallway wall. Before I could catch my breath, his mouth claimed mine again, deeper this time, his tongue pushing inside with an possessive force that wiped out every coherent thought in my head. He was furious—I could feel it in the tension of his jaw, the hard press of his body, the way his knuckles dug into my jacket—but underneath the anger was a desperate, unyielding demand.

My hands moved of their own volition, sliding from his neck, down his bare shoulders, and tearing at his chest. His skin was fire under my palms. Three weeks of desperate separation, compounded by the agony of my own stupid mistake, exploded in my chest all at once. I grabbed the waistband of his boxers, pulling him so flush against me that there wasn't a breath of air left between us.

Leo let out a low, wrecked noise in the back of his throat. He reached down, blindly grappling with the buttons of my coat, ripping it open and shoving it off my shoulders until it crumpled to the floor. Next went my jumper, pulled over my head in a chaotic frenzy of tangled arms, leaving me stripped to my thin undershirt in the cool morning draft of the hall.

He broke the kiss long enough to rest his forehead against mine, both of us breathing in ragged, synchronization. His dark eyes were open, staring straight into mine—stormy, dark, and utterly unreadable.

"You think you can just drive up here in the middle of the night?" Leo panted, his hand gripping my jaw so tightly his thumb pressed hard into my cheekbone. "You think you can just walk through my door?"

"No," I confessed, my eyes burning as I looked at him. "I thought you'd slam the door in my face. I thought I lost you."

"You almost did," he whispered, a sharp, bitter edge slicing through his words.

Then he grabbed my wrist, turning on his heel and pulling me blindly down the hallway toward his bedroom.

The room was bathed in the pale, blue-gray light of dawn filtering through the blinds. Leo didn't slow down. The moment my knees hit the side of the mattress, he pushed me backward. I hit the bed, and before I could even settle, Leo was over me, straddling my thighs, his weight pinning me down like an anchor.

His hands were frantic now—tugging at my belt, unzipping my jeans, dragging them down my legs along with my underwear until I was completely exposed to him.

Seeing me bare beneath him seemed to snap whatever thin leash Leo had left on his restraint. He leaned down, burying his face into the crook of my neck, his teeth nipping sharply at the sensitive skin over my collarbone. I arched up off the mattress with a sharp gasp, my hands tangling into his thick hair, holding him close as a shiver ran down the length of my spine.

"Leo, please," I rasped, my voice breaking. I didn't even know what I was begging for—forgiveness, punishment, or just the absolute oblivion of his touch.

Leo didn't answer with words. He reached down between us, his fingers wrapping around my fully erect shaft, slicking his grip before sliding tight up and down my length. The sudden, intense friction made my hips jerk violently. At the same time, he hooked his thumbs into the waistband of his white boxers, stripping them off in one fluid motion and kicking them off the end of the bed.

He was completely naked now, magnificent and menacing in the dim morning light.

?He didn't use lube; he didn't wait for us to slow down. He spat onto fingers and and rubbed them onto the hole between the open crevicesof my cheeks, leaving me open to anything. He slicked his fingers again with a hasty, reckless urgency, then pushed two fingers deep inside me without ceremony. I cried out against the sudden stretch, my head snapping back into the pillows, but the sharp sting was instantly consumed by the overwhelming heat of him. He prepared me quickly, his breathing harsh and uneven, before pulling his fingers back and positioning himself between my parted knees.

Leo looked down at me, his chest heaving, his face etched with a desperate, dark intensity.

"Look at me, Julian," he commanded, his voice trembling.

I opened my eyes, locked onto his, and nodded.

He drove forward, entering me in one long, relentless stroke that filled me completely.

A ragged scream tore from my throat as my back arched violently off the bed. The feeling was overwhelming—intense, tight, and agonizingly good. It felt like coming home and breaking apart all at once.

Leo froze for a split second, buried deep inside me, his head dropping as he let out a shuddering exhale. His hands gripped my hips, his knuckles turning white as he anchored himself to me. Then, without a word, he pulled back and slammed back in, setting a hard, punishing rhythm that rattled the bed frame against the wall.

Every stroke was heavy and unyielding. Leo wasn't just taking me; he was marking me, reclaiming every inch of me, burning out the memory of Dorset with raw physical dominance. My hands gripped his muscular back, my fingernails digging sharp crescents into his skin as I matched his violent pace, lifting my hips to take him deeper, completely surrendered to him.

"You're mine," Leo growled against my ear, his breath hot and ragged as he slammed into me again and again. "Do you hear me? You don't get to run down there and ruin this. You're mine."

"Yes," I sobbed out, tears spilling over my lashes as the sheer emotional weight of the night finally broke through. "Yes, Leo—yours. Only yours."

The words acted like gasoline on a fire. Leo's rhythm grew faster, wilder, untamed. He reached down between our bodies, his slicked hand wrapping tightly around my shaft, stroking me in brutal sync with his deep, heavy thrusts.

The dual sensation was too much. The frantic drive up the M3, the guilt, the terror of losing him, and the violent, beautiful reality of him filling me collided into a blinding crescendo.

My vision went white at the edges. I bucked up against his hand, a broken shout escaping my lips as my body gave out, spasms of intense pleasure crashing through me as I came hard between our stomach walls.

Seeing me break shattered Leo's final hold. With a deep, guttural groan, he thrust deep one last time, holding himself buried tight against me as his own body shook violently, pouring his multiple ropes of seed inside as he bred me.

For a long time, the only sound in the room was the harsh, ragged sound of our breathing.

Leo collapsed forward, his heavy weight pressing me into the mattress, his head buried in the crook of my neck. I wrapped my arms tightly around his trembling shoulders, pulling him as close as physically possible, my heart hammering wildly against his chest.

The physical storm had passed, leaving us bruised, spent, and entangled in the quiet light of the morning. But as the ecstasy began to fade, the silence in the bedroom grew heavy once more—a quiet reminder that the sex hadn't erased my confession, and the real talk was still waiting for us in the daylight.

"Leo," I started. "I'm sorry."

"Why did he text Toby to look after thr cottage, who looked after it before met him?"

Thank you for your feedback here. Before Julian rented the cottage, it was in the hands of the rental agency/previous tennants/owners to maintain the cottage. Now julian is rentinv it, the maintainance of the cottage is on him.

I hope this clears things up for you and I'm sorry if that little detail is confusing for some.

Chapter Fifty-Four

The silence in the bedroom had settled like wet concrete, heavy and cold over the damp sheets.

Leo lay on his back, staring blankly up at the hairline cracks in the ceiling plaster. His chest rose and fell in slow, deliberate breaths, the violent heat of twenty minutes ago replaced by a sudden, hollow numbness. Beside him, Julian rested his head against the curve of Leo's shoulder, one hand lingering over his bare chest, feeling the steady thud of Leo's heart.

Leo knew better than to mistake the sex for forgiveness. It had been an exorcism—a frantic, bruised attempt to burn through three weeks of agony and the shock of the phone call—but now the smoke was clearing, and the reality was still sitting right there between them.

"Leo," Julian whispered again, his voice rough with exhaustion. "I'm sorry. I'm so fucking sorry."

Leo didn't look at him. He slowly shifted his shoulder, pulling away just enough to break the physical contact. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, sitting up with his back turned to Julian. His spine was rigid, the long muscles of his back tight as steel as he reached down to drag his boxers off the floor and pull them back on.

"Don't," Leo said quietly. The frost was back in his tone, sharper now than it had been on the phone. "Don't just keep saying the word like it fixes anything."

"I know it doesn't," Julian said, pushing himself up onto his elbows, the chill of the room hitting his bare skin. "I'm not asking for a free pass, Leo. I came up here because I needed to look at you and tell you the truth to your face. It was a stupid, reckless mistake. It meant nothing."

Leo let out a harsh, bitter laugh that sounded more like a cough, turning his head just enough to catch Julian's eye in the gray morning light. "It meant nothing? That's what you're going with? You spent a month down in Dorset, Julian. I waited for you. And the moment some local guy and his girlfriend wave a bit of attention under your nose, you end up them in the lounge?"

The words hit like a physical slap, but Julian forced himself to take it. "It wasn't like that. There were drinks, I was confused, and I lost my fucking mind for a second. The second it happened, and thoughtof you, I halted it straight away. That’s why I called. I couldn't live with keeping it from you."

Leo stared at him, his jaw working as he fought to keep his expression locked down.

Beneath the anger raging in his chest, a sickening knot of hypocrisy was twisting inside him. He wanted to scream at Julian, to make him feel small for what he'd done in Dorset—and god knew Julian deserved it. But every time Leo opened his mouth to tear into him, a phantom image flashed behind his eyes: the dim amber light of the streetlamp in Highbury. The smell of Justin's coat. The unhurried, dangerous press of Justin’s lips against his own in the front seat of his Golf just hours ago.

Leo swallowed hard, his throat dry. He had pulled back at the absolute last second, but he had still gone to Highbury. He had still sat in that car, letting another man touch him, itching for the numbness of a revenge hookup. Part of him wanted to throw it in Julian's face—to hurt him the way he had been hurt—but the rest of him was terrified. If he admitted how close he’d come to crossing the line himself, it would taint the moral high ground he was holding onto so tightly. He buried the memory deep, suffocating it, fighting to keep his face completely inscrutable.

"You came back to me because your conscience was heavy, Julian," Leo said, his voice dropping an octave, low and tight. "Not because you were thinking about me when you were down there with them."

"That's not true! Leo, we agreed we would-" Julian sat up fully, reaching out to grab Leo's arm, but Leo flinched away from his touch as if he'd been burned.

"Don't touch me," Leo commanded, interrupting Julian mid sentence, standing up from the bed. He walked over to the window, staring out through the blinds at the waking street below. "I need to know what happened. All of it. Not the sanitized version you gave me on the phone."

"Leo, please—"

"If you want even a fraction of a chance at fixing this," Leo cut in, his back still turned, his fingers gripping the plastic slats of the blinds so hard they bent, "you sit there and you tell me exactly how you let another man and woman touch you."

Julian sat frozen on the edge of the mattress, the room feeling smaller and colder by the second, realizing that the real reckoning was only just beginning.

"I've been completely honest. My story doesn't change, because what I said to you on the phone is all that happened," Julian spoke up, his voice tight with emotion and the lingering regret of the long drive back to London.

But he knew he had to face Leo.

That's when a familiar sound chimed from Leo's bedside table—the distinct ping of an app notification.

Julian’s eyes flicked to the phone resting on the nightstand, and then slowly back up to Leo’s rigid back.

"You're back on it?" Julian asked quietly.

I think Leo is being completely unreasonable towards Julian. He can see how upset Julian was about his misdemeanour, if you can call it that, and yet is still insistent on making him feel terrible. Also, how dare Leo take advantage of Julian by having sex with him, then essentially block him out again. Let’s hope Leo gets his comeuppance
