Strange because there is no mention of any message limits that I can see, or any mention of unlimited or increased limits on the upgrade page, only that paid members can see the full message history.

There's no real point in messaging. Most don't even have the decency to reply anyway. A simple thanks but no thanks would suffice. Would you ignore someone in the street if they asked you a question
