A flogger is similar but not quite the same as a whip. It looks more like a cat-o-nine tails except with a couple of crucial differences.

First the leather "tails" are generally made of comparatively wide strips of very soft leather. It also has nothing on the end of each strt. Where as the "cat" uses much thinner tails of harder leather with a knot or even stud at the end - both designed to rip flesh off sailor's backs.

There is also a technique to using it....

As for impliments, it depends how you feel what I normally describe as dull sharp sensations.

Thin implements generally give a sharp stinging sensation - riding crops, canes etc.

Paddles, width belts and hands give a duller sensation, depending upon how they are used.

And there are also techniques of how to use those properly.

When I was "being trained" the S&M top teaching started of by saying "it isn't about inflicting pain". It is the controlled application of precise level of sensation.

Which he would usually round of with "any idiot can inflict pain". Some skilled in S&M can know how to cause a very serious, possibly life threatening injury and you would barely feel it. Or cause excruciating agony and not leave a mark

The general principle is start mild and gradually build up the intensity with breaks in between. That helps increase the threshold at which, for most people, please and pain mingle and become the same. Go to far too quickly and you go straight into pain.

Nobody enjoys real pain, whatever they say. So the dom top will take his time over a number of sessions increasing and increasing his subs threshold. Eventually, to others, they become pain pigs.

There is another reason why a good S&M top never wades in full strength and just inflict pure pain.

When your sub enjoy what most would probably find painful, you keep something in reserve for real immediate punishment if they do something really really stupid.

They won't do it again

It's just everyone is subtlety different in the way they perceive sensation, pain and pleasure. And a good experienced S&M dom top will initially work out what works and what doesn't for each sub without making it a bad experience.

Easily done by lesser people by going too far too soon or just doing what he likes and ignoring whether it works for the sub. He might think he has had a good time, but the I bet the sub never comes back

Excellent advice which is similar to what I was going to write.

A good top gradually builds up the intensity with hand then various implements such as slipper hairbrush strap belt tawse leather and wooden paddles canes and birch.

Too many so called tips/master have no clue how to do this properly and go hell for leather straight off which causes ultimate pain and causes the subs mind and ass to shut down and therefore to Dom master has ruined the session and brought it to an abrupt end.

Worn and ragged cane tips are dangerous and likely to cause cutting which ruins sessions.

Too many tops do not look after their canes and punishment implements and therefore cause avoidable damage to the skin. It's great to see cane stripes but cuts caused by broken and damaged implements is irresponsible and cuts can cause infection.
