I wasn't but always liked the uniforms. And as a lad I fancied the sporty boys in their uniforms...

My grandson joined cadets but came home one day and said " Do I have to go its boring"! I had to sympathise, I was in the RAF and couldn't wait to get out. It was bollocks! Think you need to be a certain type of guy to enjoy the military.

Was army cadets but not enough others went so I changed to air cadets, then at 16 joined the army as a junior leader which was basically a years worth of basic training with more education and adventure training than adult soldiers got who joined at 18.

I loved the cadets , lied about my age to join at 12 lol! Then 16 joined the regulars as a junior leader and then done over a decade in the army. Good times. I would always recommend it even though the army has gone too soft and not the same now

I could only manage the Boys Brigade. The 91st Peckham Brigade. I was a drummer. We used to march every Sunday to the church. That's the last time I went to church on a regular basis.

"Failing to move from the reserves to being an officer candidate destroyed me mentally. "

Why didn't you? You should have taken the plunge and given it a go. Mind you Sandhurst would have been a lot tougher than the 2 weeks the TA had to do for their training lol! I know because I had to be a section commander training TA in their basic training a fee times. A busy couple of weeks but nothing like regular training.

Air Cadets, identified early as a future prospect. Only to sabotage my chances after discovering beer and girls. I derailed pretty badly from there

I never had to do an officer interview as I joined as a junior leader which was like an extension of basic training for 16 year olds which was very tough and very different from cadets lol, set me up though.

Now from joining the cadets at 12 and pretending to be 13 I have only just started my first job at 46 that doesn't involve wearing a uniform lol, that was weird having to buy suits and think about what shirt and tie I need to wear each day .

Joined ATC when I was 13 and 3 months. Had some amazing experiences with adventure training, flying and gliding, DofE, UK summer camps, overseas camps in Germany and Cyprus. Things got even better when girls were finally allowed to join!

My Dad was in the boys brigade band and played the bass drum.

He kept it upstairs on the landing and there was no light up there at the time. My gran had to get up in the night for the loo and stubbed her to on the drum in the dark.

My dad heard her mutter "Fucking drum".
