Testosterone replacement therapy

I had my testosterone checked a little while back, not because of sexual reasons, but because of weight gain, tiredness, less clear thinking etc. and had read up about guy’s in their 50’s + taking testosterone.

I did it all via a consultant and gp, scheduling regular check ups, as it can be risky if self administered.

It turned out I was at the lower end of the levels and was prescribed a gel that I rub on every morning.

I’ve been on it about 4 weeks and the difference is life changing!

Seriously, better sleep, better focus, more energy, clearer thinking, etc etc. (And yes much better hard-ons too)

It also reduces heart attacks by 25% and strokes by 35%.

The prescription is about £40 a month, so it’s not free.

Your testosterone drops about 2% a year after 30, it’s worth getting it checked if you are flagging.

It wasn’t on my radar until recently, I don’t think many guys are aware of it and it’s so easy to use, you literally rub gel on your shoulders every morning.

I too am on Testogel. The op is quite right, a huge amount of guys over a certain age suffer testosterone loss and don't realise it, the gel helps but good diet and plenty of water also helps. I am also pescribed Sildenifil , so to that end I am sorted. Just regular health checks, and my flu jab and all is well. I even get really good hard 'morning wood' again.

The gel is applied to the shoulders so balls shrinking is out of the question. The gel 'Testogel' is a clear liquid gel that you spread on your shoulders it evaporates quickly but the skin absorbs it. It is widely used and completely safe.

I was diagnosed with low testosterone about 7 years ago after feeling tired, ED and general malaise. Used the gel initially with viagra as back up. Immediate improvement but viagra (sidenafil) gave me headaches. Swapped to 3 monthly injections of testosterone and tadenafil which i asked for after reading posts on here (much better no headaches) and jabs moved to 10 weeks. Feel like a new bloke. Plenty of energy, great erections. Have review soon but very happy with it. Guys - get tested and go for it esp if over 50.

There are not enough posts on here regarding TRT, is is not talked about enough and many men go through life unable to achieve erections because they are unaware they have low testosterone.

The OP has just started (4 weeks) but you need a full 6 months to feel all benefits.

I was on testogel for 4 years, 2 sachets per day so that £40 cost would be £80, but I am on NHS prescription so no charge.

I transferred just over a year ago to Nebido 1000mg/4ml testosterone undecanoate intramuscular injections every 8 weeks.

In mid 50's I enjoy morning erections daily, and have a great sex life, my energy and fitness is now like it was in my 20's and I am gaining body hair and muscle.

There are a good few incorrect statements on here but in general most is spot on.

I am an expert on TRT, I have the knowledge, and 6 years experience of both Gels and injections.

TRT is available on prescription, and if you go on this medication it is for life, your sperm counts will lower so you have to ensure you have no intention of starting a family as your fertility drastically drops.

Erections and general health increases drastically.

There is plenty information on females menopause but never any information on male low testosterone

"Be careful folks ! You are at a greater risk of prostate Cancer and within the age group. "

This has been disproven via various clinical studies. However if your provider is a doctor lead clinic they will likely require yearly dre checks when your 40+

Something most men wont have

If you’re feeling

sluggish low energy

brain fog

low sex drive

body shape change

Lesser erections (softer, less frequent)

Then get your testosterone checked, it’s something vital in your body that tends to reduce with age.

There’s a normal range something like 10-30 nmol/L, in men of all ages mine was at 9!

I was put on TRT and the difference was almost immediate, and still carries on being hugely beneficial.

There’s risks after 50 and you need to be monitored regularly, with blood tests and consultation. The ideal level range over 50 in age is low to high teens, not in the 20’s+.

If you read the health benefits of normal testosterone, there are many, but let’s say I can everything better and harder than before.

.

.

I was tested and shown to be 9nmol/L, my doctor said this was within normal range, I then fractured my ankle and was seen by a specialist, I mentioned my low testosterone to him and he suspected I also had Low Bone Density.

He carried out further tests and confirmed I was Low on Testosterone and Low Bone Density was the cause of my ankle fracture.

His report was sent to my GP and I am now on TRT (Testosterone Replacement for life via NHS.

NOTE; This is a nhs treatment;

I have been on Testosterone Replacement for over 4 years now, first two years on Testogel and once dosage was fixed out things worked well, I was on two sachets a day which are rubbed into your shoulders.

I changed over to testosterone undecanoate (Nebido®) 1000mg /4ML injection every 8 weeks and this works just as well.

I average 25nmol/L although peak is slightly higher and Trough slightly lower.

My daily morning erections have returned and can achieve an erection as and when required, often when not required too.

.

So why was I placed on TRT, Testosterone Replacement

I suffered Erectile Dysfunction for 3 years, I was unable to achieve or maintain erections and I also have an effeminate shaped body

my other symptoms included;

• fatigue

• lethargy

• depression

• anxiety

• irritability

• low libido

• erectile dysfunction

• reduced exercise tolerance and strength

• excessive sweating and night sweats

• poor concentration or memory

• needing to shave less often (my legs, arms and face were smooth only needed to shave once a week or less.

My doctor and specialist eventually discovered this was due to Low Testosterone and I am now on Testosterone replacement for life.

My overall well being has increased rapidly, my fitness, strength and im even getting noticeable muscles

My Erections have also returned big time, powerful strong rock solid erections every morning and as and when performance is required, often unexpected moments too such as standing in a Tesco check out queue

Feel free to ask me anything regarding TRT and I will try and give a direct answer of my experience

Im on TRT. I kive in newcastle and unfortunatly the local endrocronologist, whilst claiming to be a specilist in hypogonaism doesnt belive in non clinical hypogonadism.

My bro had a test level below 6nmol with all the symptoms and he still refused him trt.

When i got testrd i was just below thrir "normal range" of 7.6 but the bssm guidelines state anyone below 12 may be a candidate for treatment. I was refused treatment in the nhs so i went private to a doctor led clinic (not a online provider)

Best thing ive ever done. No longer feel suicidal, no longer anxious, more confident and ive been promoted twice since starting (maybe 3 depending how my interview goes tomorrow lol) where previously i wouldnt have put in for the jobs.

Not to mention morning errections! Yeah my balls have shrunk but my lass said they were too big to begin with

Its not cheap when your going private but to get it on the NHS is a real postcode lottery.

Oh you can also keep/regain your fertility by using HCG as part ifvyour treatment (not available via nhs)

I receive on nhs and have done for 6 years, I also have a full years supply of Testogel since I have now switched to nebido injection every 8 weeks

Remember

Low Testosterone is the cause of osteoporosis and Low bone density

My bone mass increased by 12% in 2 years as tested by DEXA scan.

If testing 3 keys things.

1 it should be a veinous sample. Finger prick tests are notoriusly unreliable

2. It should be before taken fasted

3. It should be taken as close to 8:30 as possible as natral test levels are highest in the morning

My younger bro is going through the same things in his 20’s. Some gland issue.

I have many body builder friends who take them for “sport” and muscle strengthening and body building. Probably illegally, they sell for £5 a shot. But need to be self regulated and see a dodgy doctor to make sure they’re safe. A lot of gym guys who are into bodybuilding do it. So very little stigma.

Some good points but no one has mentioned the rage and anger you suffer.

The extra testosterone or re-introduction of it causes serious mood changes mostly aggression and rage. In my brother and friends cases.

The term meat head comes to mind.

Also what about premature hair loss, balls do shrink due to an external source or Test.

And gyno? Don’t some men develop man boobs

Just my thoughts. I’m no expert

There are vast differenced in trt and juicing for body building.

The body builders are going to superphysiological and usually dangerous high levels of testosterone.

People on TRT are taking their levels to within the normal testosterone range.

If normal ranges caused roid rage every male will have it just buy being healthy.

Hairloss is caused by testosterone being convertrd to DHT. This is mostly based on genetics. If your susecpable to hairloss then getting no normal levels will cause hairloss, this is hairloss that you would have anyhow.

Balls do shrink as they stop producing any natural testosterone, this effect can be reduced by using HCG which mimics lutinizing hormone and continues some sperm and testosterone production.

That being said tho. Id rather have small balls thrn wanting to kill myself daily

Hcg

I have been on TRT for 6 years now through NHS.

The NHS supplies testosterone with no hassle whether it be Testogel or injection.

I was on the gel for 4 years and now changed over to injection every 8 weeks.

I looked into HCG but my specialist advised against it. Due to no HCG both my LH and FSH levels have dropped basically to zero and my testicles have shrinked but not drastically.

My testosterone levels average 25nmol/L

And my free testosterone is at a level where my Bone Density has increased by 12.8% over 2 years.

My fitness and wellbeing feels like I am back in my 20's as well as daily morning erections and erections when needed.

I still produce semin but my ejaculations are not as strong.

And as for bodybuilders, they inject steroids of a different type.

If they over use injections their natural testosterone will drop off and yes their testicles will shrink. Plus their bloods are not tested regularly for any increase in psa, oestradol and other important checks.

I have shoulder length hair which is still as thick as it was before starting trt.

"Be careful folks ! You are at a greater risk of prostate Cancer and within the age group.

Actually you have Less Chance of Prostate Cancer as your psa is tested and monitored at least every 6 months - learn the facts before posting.

TRT returns your testosterone levels to what they should be for a man of your age.

It does not increase testosterone above what it should be.

.

Of more concern is Low testosterone which in turn also gives you Low Free Testosterone

Free testosterone provides bone growth. If it is low then you are developing osteoporosis and this goes unchecked for decades until it is too late.

Can someone recommend a decent private TRT doctor/specialist. I'm currently with the Ledger Clinic, but looking for other options.

Thanks in advance.

Anyone got any thoughts on the Numan blood test as a first stepping stone?

Always presumed the test would find the slightest little “flag” to avoid being eligible to claim back the money.

Thanks in advance.

"Your balls do shrink as your body stops producing its own testosterone due to the gel

Does your cock shrink too? Asking for a friend."

This really scares me off. I will not try it because there are many other side effects from the Google search not mentioned here.

I have been on TRT for 6 years, only side effect is slightly smaller testicles simply due to them no longer needing to produce testosterone.

Ignore the idiot who asked if your cock shrinks as it is utterly nonsense. Perhaps his brain is shrinking without using.

What side effects do you really think there are?

If you look at a Spire medical centre and find an endocrinologist who specialises in hormones, then you should be on to the right path.

Dr Google is not the right place to be getting this information, think about it, low T levels can be harmful and unpleasant in a number of ways, a healthy T level is exactly that, healthy.

The key is to keep getting your blood checked, every month to start with, every 3 months, then every 6 months, to make sure you’re at the right level and you’re liver, kidneys, blood count, etc etc are all good.

It’s more closely monitored on all your vital signs than not being on TRT

Balls shrinking? No idea, not noticed

Cock shrinking? Definitely not

Hard on and ejaculation much improved.

Don’t take my word or Google’s word for it, speak to an endocrinologist who knows about these things.

The ledger clinic is good but the best in the uk is the mens health clinic. These are ad far as i kniw the only 2 doctor led clinics so the only ones worth considering

"I had my testosterone checked a little while back, not because of sexual reasons, but because of weight gain, tiredness, less clear thinking etc. and had read up about guy’s in their 50’s + taking testosterone.

"

Interesting post

This week I got an unexpected NHS appointment letter for a bone density test and can only think it’s related to me falling a couple of years ago and fracturing my wrist. I wasn’t planning to go but reading this post and having some of the other symptoms people list is making me think I should go if bone density being low is a sign of low testosterone as id love to gey rid of some of these other symptoms

"I too am on Testogel. The op is quite right, a huge amount of guys over a certain age suffer testosterone loss and don't realise it, the gel helps but good diet and plenty of water also helps. I am also pescribed Sildenifil , so to that end I am sorted. Just regular health checks, and my flu jab and all is well. I even get really good hard 'morning wood' again."

This is a very interesting and useful thread. My question is, does the Sildenfil accompany the testosterone gel? Do they work together? Or is the gel sufficient on its own?

Probably on line, like most things; but when it comes down to stuff you put in your body, I think your GP is a safer option.

"Is there anywhere to get some of the gel without going to a doctor?"

This is not a stop/start treatment.

This is for people who have Low Testosterone and Erectile Dysfunction

This is a life long treatment to give you a healthier lifestyle as well as bringing back your erections

Blood's have to be tested by your GP

Sometimes you are better initially going private

Look for a private - spire or bupa hospital online close to you and each hospital normally has a list of consultants.

.

You need to look for a - Consultant Urological Surgeon

Ideally one who focuses on TRT, low testosterone and erectile dysfunction

.

Your consultation will be in the range of £100 - £200 and the consultant will also arrange blood tests which will also be extra cost.

.

This is the best way for a proper diagnosis as normal NHS GP's are not clued up on Low Testosterone and TRT.

.

The consultant will write to your GP, and if he advises TRT, you will get this on the NHS.

.

There are also private testosterone replacement clinic's but this is a very costly method.

.

Remember if you go down this route its not a stop/start process

If you start on this, it's for life.

Thanks for all the replies to this topic, very useful.

I have thought about getting tested but I am hesitant about starting something I'd then need to be on for iife, but if it did bring benefits...

Male Pattern Baldness and then getting hairy everywhere else is probably my main concern. lol

I have been on TRT for 7 years, I have shoulder length fairy thick hair on my head and relatively smooth over my body.

The advantage of TRT is that you keep a healthy level of testosterone whilst others drop off as they age.

"Be careful folks ! You are at a greater risk of prostate Cancer and within the age group. "

I think there's some doubt about that these days. The original research compared men who had been chemically castrated because they already had Ca Prostate and normal levels. There's evidence that the receptors involved are saturated at a fairly low concentration, and increasing it has no effect.

Got my first appointment next week.

"I think my T was a bit low when I tested , but honestly I don't suffer from brain fog, weight gain etc. I heard the gels can shrink the balls mine would disappear!"

You can be prescribed HCG at the same time. Protects fertility and testicle size.

Having been om trt for a few years ive recently had to stop due to increased heamatcrit and heamoglobin.

Been off for about 2.5 months and my blood is back to normal thickness but as you would expect test levels are low but they are not non exsistant so they may be recovering, obvouisly they are very unlikely to go above what they were before i started trt.

Drops 2% a year after 30, not good for me then as I am 66 so mine has dropped about 72%
