Not a nutter I think. Obviously wants Ukraine as a buffer state. This may encourage places like Finland to join NATO. The question is, how effective will the resistance in Ukraine be? Can we support them in doing so? Could the combination of a protracted and troubled occupation and stringent sanctions make him less secure at home?

Putin holds all the cards. We watched and stood aghast whilst he annexed Crimea, we stood aghast again with Syria, we gave the Taliban weapons to use against Russia in the 80s, they used them against us in the naughties. He could draw the iron curtain all over again and no one will do anything because theres only ONE OUTCOME. And no one wants that...

I just feel horrendous for the people of Ukraine, having their new peaceful and free western lives destroyed by that despot who arks back to the Soviet days. Perhaps something would happen if he was assassinated by someone neutral. If only! It took years and MILLIONS of lives before Hitler met his over timely end. I fear this could go on for long whilst Ukraine is brought back into the dark ages yet again, and held there for this cunt.

Putin ... obviously a bad lot to say the least.

God help all those innocent people in the Ukraine. So hard to imagine oneself in their situation.

Has this appalling act of warfare been provoked ? Make your own mind up but dont forget events in 2014. A US and UK backed coup overthrew the elected government in Ukraine and installed a government with liberal sympathies.

Also, Im sorry to say that promises on the part on NATO not to move further East ...have not been respected. This is quite significant measured against the US reaction to USSR missiles in Cuba .For avoidance of doubt ...Russia does have legitimate security concerns (in the sammeway the US did in the Cuba crisis) But wow .. totallly out of order in its reaction

So ...Putin is a madman and totally out of order ....but has he been provoked ...I think so

Any money donated to the Conservative Party by Russian born people does not come from the Putin government. It comes from Russian individuals who have businesses in the UK. Quite a few of them are no longer welcome in Russia whilst Putin is in charge.

There are indications that Putin is not having it all his own way. Fierce resistance, bewildered and frightened Russian squaddies, elite commando attacks repulsed etc. Looks like it's not going to be the blitzkrieg it was supposed to be.

Not to mention lots of disquiet amongst the Russian public and even the media.

My thoughts are with the brave Ukrainians fighting for their country.

I don't think so. Trump threatened to bomb Moscow if Putin went to war or tried to seize non Russian territory. With all his many faults and eccentricities Trump talked to people e.g. Kim-Jung-Un; and there were no new wars during his watch.

Do you believe what he say's though?

He did say that the Russian armed forces were merely on training exercises at the Ukraine border ... and that there was no intention of attacking/invading.

Some of us even gave him the benefit of the doubt.

You have to judge someone by their actions, not their words, and what Putin has done cannot be undone.

"Unbelievable fuckin nutter!

Is he not defending his sovereign nation from the eastward march of NATO?

I'm not saying I agree with his invasion of Ukraine however can't you see the logic of why he's doing it from a geopolitical perspective.

Also, it's not a massive surprise. He practically spelled out what would happen if NATO pushed for Ukraine membership. Again, I'm not suggesting that justifies his actions however Putin did state his intention and the outcome was known.

What surprises me is NATO's response or lack of a response therein. I sense both sides used Ukraine's eagerness to become NATO members as an opportunity to play out a different game and redrawn some new battle lines.

Anyway, here's hoping this can be resolved with minimal civilian casualties, and a permanent peace can be found to stop this from reoccurring.

A quote from a respected American Secretary of State on the radio this a.m.- The Kremlin looks out and sees only vassals and enemies. No third option.

Disgusting as it is they have to be allowed a buffer between them and the west, with consequences for the former republics to the west. No NATO or EU membership. Anything else and the Russians know that given the option their public will vote with their feet as in 1989- with just Putin and Lavrov left to turn the lights out. That is what the Kremlin are protecting against.

There is no moral or other defence of this policy. Self interest means they offer only a second rate government product to their citizenry and refuse to allow more appealing western alternatives onto the shelves.

As ever the wall they need is not to keep us out but to keep their own people in and thereby themselves in power.
