You have to hope at some point the tide will turn and footballers won’t need to hide their sexuality if they don’t choose to. With how it is at the moment I don’t blame them for not doing it. You’d hope the majority of people would be ok, but there will be a noisy group who wouldn’t be able to cope with it.

As for newspapers running stories like that, there are no words. No one should be outed, it should be entirely up to the individual. It’s a despicable thing to do. Even without saying any names it drums up such a response that it’ll happen eventually

It is pathetic that in a so called outward looking society that newspapers are printing this shit and calling guys brave. It should not be a case of media wonder or a newsworthy event that footballers are gay. They dont print stories about coming out as heterosexual. Who cares if they are. I hope they are happy together and don't give a shit about media or supporters or society.

It is the nature of the media today... whether a footballer, politician, business person, doctor, or priest... the media are set on whipping up a particular corner of society with a grudge to tear them down... and then report the resulting shit-storm as news.

Other than the Queen recently, when was the last time our media had anything nice to say / write about anyone?... other than to set them up prior to then tearing them down.

Pathetic... our media are now often causing the news (e.g. fuel shortages, gay footballers, etc, etc)... and no longer independent reporters of it.

Just because they, or anyone for that matter work in the public eye it gives no one the right to force their hand into admitting they are gay.

They are doing their jobs their club(s) are happy with them so who gives a damn what the gutter press think they should do.

I take it you've never seen gay man, who mince, making their way to the cruising area of Hampstead Heath because they do exist.

That aside it was a joke, as I'm sure the majority of people recognised.

"Does it really matter anyway?"

of course it matters, particularly for young LGBTQ football fans who would probably feel more comfortable and reassured that their favourite sport is not a hostile and unwelcoming place.

Just because you don't need to see those visible role models, try thinking about other people for once. This attitude of "well it makes no difference to me so why would it matter to anyone else" is such a selfish and self absorbed attitude. People can't ever have empathy or think about things from any perspective but their own.

Football is seen still as a homophobic sport, with a fan base that only backs that up.

How often have you heard any homophonic abuse at a football match ??. I'm full time trans and a season ticket holder at my local club (Oxford United). I have only once had any form of abuse at football and that's in about 15 years and been treated exceptly by fans and officials of many clubs. So,in my experience, your comments about a homophonic fan base are wildly inaccurate.

That's of concern, that police who say they lack the resources to investigate many crimes, are taking it upon themselves to interfere in the behind-doors recreational activities of consenting adults.

Which sex club?

I think one could include some Glasgow Rangers / Sevco supporters, who have a high overlap with the bigots of the orange disorder.

They were raging when one of their favourite pubs, which had closed, was then bought by Pipeworks gay sauna.

"It's well documented as homophobic as well as racist.

How many games do you go to in a season to make this sweeping statement. It has about as much basis in the truth as saying all gay men are effeminate.

Yes there are racists and homophobes at games, but there are the same people in any workplace or leisure facility anywhere.

Also people aren’t afraid of calling out racism or homophobia inside grounds these days, and perpetrators are at least ejected from the ground and often banned and/or prosecuted.

There were around 250,000 people at just premier league games today. You show me any collection of that many people anywhere, and you can almost guarantee there will be someone with extreme views in there. Football supporters are no worse than anyone else on the whole, it’s just the mass media that point out the few idiots that lead to people believing that all football fans are like that.

And back to calm lol
