Lidls/Aldi or Tesco etc

As above, which is your preference?

I always shop at either Aldi or Lidl due to the savings.

Not so much savings as there used to be but still worthwhile when compared to the big four.

Whats your choice?

You do realise that Lidl & Aldi meat comes from the same sources as Tesco and Waitrose? I know because I produce beef and lamb that goes into all of those stores. You can look up the slaughterhouse and packhouse codes printed on the packaging. It’s ironic that two German discount supermarkets support British farmers more than Tesco or Sainsbury’s, who will drop their domestic suppliers if they can get a boat load of New Zealand lamb for a knockdown price.

It's strange how so few people know this. Basically you're paying extra for the packaging.

Mostly Aldi these days. Nearest Lidl a bit far away. Used to alternate between the two where I lived before as both equal-distant. I do like Morrisons but again a bit far. Haven't been into a Tesco in 3 years after a run-in with a rude check-out female. Not keen on Sainsbury's. Quite like Waitrose but no idea where the nearest one to here is.

Lidl's first but their fruit and veg go off very quickly. I get what Lidl's haven't got and any fresh food from Tescos.

My reason isn't because they're better than the other supermarkets, it's just I drive past them every day on the way to work and they're only 100 meters apart.

Back in March 2000, lockdown was with us and idiots were panic-buying everything from toilet rolls to air fresheners (something they obviously couldn't survive without?).

I walked out of Morrison's, then Sainsburys, then Tesco, having failed to get essentials like bread, milk, potatoes etc.

Then I remembered that a second Aldi had opened not far from home, the previous September.

Hallelujah! They didnt have everything I wanted, but they had all I needed. I'd expected lower quality, but that wasn't the case. I've shopped in the two local Aldis for almost all my food shopping since.

Also, I can now afford to try new things without worrying about the cost.

Some of the food from Aldi is made in the same factory as M&S, resulting in identical food in different packaging. More expensive does not equal higher quality.

Exactly. Aldi also has many food items not available in the bigger supermarkets, and they're cheap enough to try without hurting your wallet.

I did - thanks. I typed 2020 but bloody autocorrect jumoed in.

I had to change that last "in" from "on" . Whichever I type, autocrap alters it to the other. It's supposed to learn, and does, but still does it.

As most of the food comes from the same suppliers, there's absolutely no difference. This was evidenced by the chicken issue a few years ago. It's snobbery. I prefer lidl to aldi I find it's best if you cook rather than eat ready meals. I still use Morrisons occasionally as they have a butcher's counter and if I'm eating meat (occasionally) the quality and service is fantastic.

I used to do my main good shop in Sainsbury's but am getting more from Aldi these days. The latter's Dolce Gusto coffee pods are better than Nescafe's and far cheaper. It's the same with their shower gel vs Sanex, Almat bio powder vs Persil and, surprisingly, Aldi's ketchup is a quarter of the price of Heinz ketchup yet is virtually identical in taste.

That reminds me of a pack of two rolson tapemeasures we bought from B&Q once

I only wanted one but the pack of 2 was only £1.99

We got them home one pulled out and went twang then wouldnt retract

The other pulled out and when i pressed the button to retract it the little clip on the end shot off and the tape disappeared inside the casing ha ha

B&Q was a ten mile round trip so i never bothered taking them back

My Nan always said you buy cheap and you'll buy twice

Barrow in Furness

Shop where it is convenient. Working all over the country means sometimes it is one store over the others.

One thing that factors in the cost is the amount of stock a store carries. Your average Aldi/Lidl store stocks about 500 items, the larger Asda/Tesco 5000+. For example take Malt Whisky ?? a large Tesco will have 20-30 brands on the shelves, an Aldi/Lidl will have 2-3. Replicate that through blended whiskey, gins wines etc.

All that stock has to be paid for and it is by you the customer as it is covered by the extra they charge on the essentials that people buy everyday, milk, bread etc.

I found this out when I was building a Lidl store years ago and I asked them how they could sell a tin of baked beans so cheaply and had already assumed it was due quality. I was corrected on this and had the above explanation laid out.

There is a lot of psychology employed in supermarkets to get you to part with your money. Take for example the bread and milk are never together but opposite ends of the shop that's to get you to walk through and "pick up" other items. The fact they reorganise the layouts on a regular basis is so you cannot get familiar with the shop and know where everything is automatically and have go look for it.

Interesting. I'm sitting here with a mug of Aldi's own brand coffee and quite enjoying it. Can't say that I've tried their corned beef as not a great corned beef lover but I buy and enjoy most of their products.

Incidentally I have not smoked a cigarette since 1988 and my taste-buds are fine.

Iceland for good frozen stuff.

Asda for the pizza counter where you can make your own pizza, and they also have some nice pasta meals and chicken parmos for relatively cheap.

Lidl and Aldi for regular food shop. Good prices. Lidl has the better bakery. Aldi has the better ready meals and the famous middle aisle.

Tesco if I need something else and forget to buy something since it's not too far to go. They do some nice stuff but nothing is really standout.

Also honourable mention goes to Costco. Brilliant bakery and prices but always in locations that are a fucking pain to get to.

(Also m&s if I fancy something bougie)

Waitrose mainly, often see celebs and Arsenal players/management in my local store.

Whenever I'm in the Piccadilly area though, I always like to pop into Fortnum & Mason for a few nice treats.

If so only recent. Prior to a mild dose of Covid I had a very keen sense of smell. Used loads of Aldi and quite a few Lidl but never noticed any bad smells. Some Tesco smell of freshly baked bread. Think they do that on purpose. Remember one Tesco having a rather unpleasant smell of decaying vegetables so never went in there again.

Never been in a Travelodge and barred myself from Wetherspoons 20 years ago.

Branded goods are expensive whatever supermarket you use and that’s where the biggest price rises have been. Supermarkets used to battle to try to keep the prices of them down.

Since the advent of Aldi and Lidl though, supermarkets have realised that brands are less important than price.

If you buy a supermarkets ‘saver’ brand it’s usually no more expensive than Aldi or Lidl, and the quality with all of them these days is ok.

I think the major supermarkets have played a significant part in food price inflation, just read that the price of food is falling but supermarket prices are still rising because it apparently takes time to pass the reduction onto the customer, the same excuse lenders use when interest rates go down, but it doesn't seem to cause the same admin problems when wholesale prices go up and the increases are passed on straight away .Tesco and Sainsbury recently and I'm sure reluctantly, reduced the price of milk to match the price it's sold in Aldi, they can do it when they need to. The major supermarkets think the public are sheep and will stay loyal, but they're now finding that's starting to change, I hope it continues and accelerates.

"Someone at work bought a jar of Aldis own brand coffee in that she had in one of their luxury Christmas hampers

It was horrible and no one liked it

She said that the own brand tin of corned beef was horrible as well and even her dog wouldn't eat it.

You definitely get what you pay for !

My brother eats Aldi n Lidl's home brand food but he smokes 40 B&H a day so his taste-buds aren't so good

Interesting. I'm sitting here with a mug of Aldi's own brand coffee and quite enjoying it. Can't say that I've tried their corned beef as not a great corned beef lover but I buy and enjoy most of their products.

Incidentally I have not smoked a cigarette since 1988 and my taste-buds are fine."

I don’t mind Lidil or Aldi but I hate the queuing at the check out it seems irrelevant of the shop I go in from Manchester to Devon they only ever have 2 checkouts operational. Why have they not got self checkouts? I just can’t be arsed queueing.

Every Asda I go looks like it’s dirty and not had any attention for years, so I tend to avoid.

Morrisons seem to want to charge for the car park another faff I can’t be bothered with. Pay to park but we’ll give you the money back at the till, annoying.

As Sainsbury’s is out of my way it leaves me with Tesco.

They’re not a lot between them all price wise, but it’s a much better experience at Sainsburys.

Asda, Lidl and Aldi just seem to be full of fat women in their mid 20s dragging 4 kids around… the youngest constantly screaming, the oldest beating up the other two and all constantly asking for stuff she’s got no intention of letting them have.

Just checked and it is called Beautifully Buttery so no doubt either based on Utterly Buttery or the same product with a different label. I note they have a confectionary product called Cartwheels that are identical to Waggonwheels but about two thirds the price or less.

since lidls introduced self service custody suites..

( you're a prisoner untill showing a receipt before release gates to freedom in self serve section) .

.

it seems now only 1 till open ,0 if you call early..surely lidls can afford a few school leavers to solely operate the tills,

giving them work experience and a CV reference...possibly some going on to be managers....

Not everyone trusts or wants or has contactless cards...

I am informed Aldis are a touch better as quicker to open more tills ..

If i need bits from Lidls now, virtually next door,I go in at 8am or not at all

We Don’t have an Aldi. Couldn’t do a weekly shop in Lidl as they don’t stock many of the things I buy regularly, but do check out what they have for the week. Gave up on Tesco as they keep on moving stuff and you can’t find what you are looking for (plus a lot of stuff is so short shelf life you can’t get a weeks food in)z
