I read this week that HPV is behind a global rise in throat cancer, attributed to oral sex

Do it. Best to have them all done. It's free, injection in the shoulder ish area iirc. If it's being offered and can help your overall health and immune response then it's good to do.

I got mine done with my routine sexual health checkup yesterday. It took 30 seconds, no pain, and I've had no side effects.

If it can stop me getting cancer I'd call that an absolute bargain!

I’ve had it and yes it’s beneficial to help not develop cancer of the anus or throat

I had HPV cancer in my throat, and I’d encourage anyone and everyone to get the jab, it’s not nice.

But just a quick couple of points;

HPV cancer has very little to do with oral or anal sex. 90 odd percent of people carry the virus anyway, and it’s a bit of a lottery as to who gets cancer from it. People that have never had any form of sex do contract HPV cancer.

HPV cancer is an extremely virulent strain, but it is also one of the most curable, with over a 90% survival rate.

Vaccine prevents Penile cancer and genital warts too.

I had it at same time as Hep B vaccine, felt a little flu like later that evening but was back to normal next morning. Had no other side effects.

Just remember that it's a 2 dose course so you need to go back for a second dose 6 months later.

Usually you can do this at the same time as your 3/6 month checkup

Had it done at the local sexual health clinic. Even though I’m too old to have it, they still offered it to me as I’m sexually active with multiple partners

I don't get why it's only available to the under 45s. Are us over that age not supposed to have a sex life or something?

"I don't get why it's only available to the under 45s. Are us over that age not supposed to have a sex life or something?"

No it's because by the time you are 45, unless you have been vaccinated when younger you're likely to have been exposed to the virus so inoculation is too late.

HPV cancer can take years or even decades to develop after you acquire HPV.
