I just swim for fitness after a session in the gym, usually 40 lengths, breaststroke, which is 1km.

I'm not looking to break any speed records, so swim shorts do for me.

Not having a dig, but without punctuation it isn't clear if you are asking for advice, or offering to give it.

Me too ,I used to wear shorts but now I do it regularly I want something more slimline which doesn't look too sexual as I go where the swimmers are a mix of ages and gender.

My advice would be to wear what you like, and the more often you swim the faster you will improve and become fitter.

Just bought some trunks with a removable pad ,half way between Speedos and shorts ,not too revealing but fairly streamline .I'd prefer to swim naked as I did in Bristol recently but my local pool don't do it.ive just restarted swimming after a long break,I'm currently on 45 lengths and I'm aiming for 60, which is a mile, and when I reach that, I'll probably stick at that, and concentrate on improving my speed /time.It wont turn me into Superman but it will give my whole body a weekly workout and my brain one too .

I disagree. Naked swimming is the best, but not usually allowed

Speedos. Less resistance than baggy shorts. Once you know your size decathalons good for a range.

You will feel a difference with speedos. Should see an increase in swimming speed and swimmable distance. Shorts cause a huge amount of drag.

Racing coach here. It doesn't matter what you wear for training so long as it's comfortable, nobody is comparing your times in training to anyone else's.

Jammers and speedos come into their own in races, where of course you need to be slippier in the water in order to shave something like a second off a 100m. It's a marginal gain thing. Of course everyone else wears the same in a race, so you're largely wearing race kit to merely not be at a disadvantage.

Getting faster is about 2 major things, the main one being stamina. You can only really build stamina by doing drills in the pool. Easiest way is to join a club, at your age you'll be in the "masters" category who may only train twice a week. But it'll teach you sets and reps and timings, then you can train alone as well. The more days you train, the more stamina you build. Start with 45 min sessions at least, and build to 60, and then 90. You can build leg and arm specific stamina by using pull buoys and floats and varying your training.

The other main one is streamlining which mostly means a good technique and a body position which is as flat as possible, to get that you need core strength and conditioning. You can improve that in the gym with cruches, planks etc, all the core exercises.

Clothing choice is way down the list, save that for race day. A fit swimmer with good technique in a pair of ratty old shorts will beat a medium fitness swimmer wearing £300 Arena jammers, at every distance, hands down.

I swim a mile straight of, no stopping twice a week. A mixture of breast stroke and front crawl. I usually take 43-45 minutes and just wear plain swimming trunks.

I have a friend who used to be a swimming coach and she gives me lots of advice about when to breathe and to count in between strokes . It makes me feel so much better for the day ahead and keeps me fit. I really enjoy swimming.

Prefer trunks over jammers (see profile pic).

I like the feel of the water and admiring glances.
