Legal notice

Why do so many people have this "Sydney university privacy blah blah blah, I'll sue you" notice on their profile? Do they not realise it means absolutely nothing and offers zero legal protection? Why not actually create a bespoke profile that lets other users know a little about yourselves? If you're so concerned about your privacy, you're in the wrong place! Rant over

There's a section in the FAQ dedicated to this, stating that it's completely useless

As if Sydney University, or any other institute, want a blurry photo of a middle-aged man in his wife's knickers

"Makes me laugh when people write something about facebook xx"

Some have copied the Facebook nonsense and substituted Fabguys for Facebook.

So it reads: "Fabguys is now a publicly traded entity ..."

That's funny because there's no mention of Fabguys at the London Stock Exchange or indeed any other stock exchange.

I don't think you need to worry about Sydney there could be many others that could be lifting data.

Admins faq's thoughts are

The "legal disclaimer" is pointless nonsense and all does is take up extra space on our servers. Please remove it if you have it on your profile. If you're worried about privacy please set your account to be hidden from non-registered users on your privacy page (this also hides it from search engines but may take a week or two to drop out of search) and remove the notice (and encourage others to do likewise).

Common sense advice would be NOT to put any information on your profile (here, or on any such site) that could identify you or that you don't want to become public! So for your own benefit, don't post phone numbers, real names or email / instant message addresses on your profile that people might see or "Google".

Some people may put non-identifying pics on their public profile but keep face pics private or for friends, for example.

I wouldn't say it was a waste of time, I tend to use the legal notices as an extra filter.

Actually, would a sane human being who wants to maintain their privacy after posting pictures of anonymous body parts, spend thousands to open up their profile to more open scrutiny, ensuring full identification, in a civil court action?

It's a stupidity marker and a helpful indicator of just who to avoid.

Notice whenever this topic comes up no one pops up to give reasons why this privacy bollox is defendable. Obviously because it isn't.

Even if they ignore your warning and use your picture, where and how could you contact them? And who’s got the money to take legal action which won’t be cheap, especially against an overseas organisation with a different legal system.

I prefer to create a real and genuine profile of myself with face photos and body photos.

I am what I say I am. I am what I said I do.

I am here to make friends and hookups and not to play hide and seek. It drives me crazy.

The only way for people to know you is to introduce yourself with face and body photos and a brief description of yourself - this is my opinion and you have every right to defer.

Thank you.

Tegeingl, Gogledd Cymru

Sydney University has been highlighted for data protection due to its commitment to transparency and compliance with global regulations like General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The university prioritises data handling practices, cyber security, and educating students and staff on safe online behaviour.

The University of Sydney's privacy policies are governed by Australian law, which of course isn't directly enforceable in the UK.

For UK data protection, the relevant laws are the UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Data Protection Act 2018.

As i put on my.profile:

Fabguys is not a public traded entity

Facebook has fuck all to do with Fab

Sydney University doesn't exist.

UCC 1-308-11308-103: is a fictional US statute and once again has fuck all to do with copyright or privacy.

UCC 1-308: does exist but it does not apply to privacy law.

Rome Statute: only applies to the likes of war crimes etc

You've missed the point though, it's a little like chain mail. People only put this nonsense on their profile because other people do. None of them would or could take any action if someone used their pictures.
