I'm on a course in Warrington on my way home I join the motorway at junction 11 and there are cars parked up on the right hand side. It's a dead end with a big metal gate leading into a field

I presume you mean the North side of the island where the dead end with gates is the perimeter of Silver Lane Country Park. On the South side of the island is another dead end which is also Silver Lane, the two sections having been severed by the motorway.
