It’s sometimes very difficult to find suitable places to do it.

Macmillan for example, do very good financial help, but the online support groups are terrifying. Think Mumsnet. Women angry at their partners for having cancer and not wanting sex anymore, or furious they are having to care for them. Support for gay men is almost non existent.

I’m trying a gay group called OUTpatients tomorrow to see if that any better.

What a great thread this is.... I suffer with mental health issues on and off. Finding people to talk to that actually understand is difficult!

I am always happy to listen to anyone needing an ear, I know first hand how tough it is to deal with.

Thank you OP for a great thread

Always remember guys, whatever it is 1000s of others will have gone through the same or something similar.

If it’s a drink problem I wouldn’t recommend AA , get professional help, I speak from experience.

Andy man’s clubs are good to just unload as well, lots of guys just trying to express how they feel about pretty much anything

Good luck

Agree. Recovery from addiction or mental health is a long, often bumpy road and not everyone's route will be similar. Be open and honest with yourself and those helping you, don't be worried about asking for help. It is out there although you may have to wait, so try to stay strong and fill the gap with things like already mentioned in this thread. You probably won't end up with everything you want but things do get better, much better.

Taking the first step is the hardest as men we don't like to admit we need help.As others have said there are lots of great groups where you would be among people who understand.Look for a group near you and take that first step.

We have a dedicated patch on our allotment field for people with mental health issues. Its quite remarkable how quickly being close to nature can put a smile on someone's face. Sometimes that's all it takes just a smile and a helping hand to bring someone out of the shadows xxx

That's the good thing about Scotland, we have so many open spaces, beautiful countryside, Loch's, hills, mountains all on our doorstep and the scenery is simply amazing. So many English recognise this and relocate for a better lifestyle.

Have you ever thought of relocation yourself?

One of the problems with today, that we didn’t have so much a few years ago is a lack of ‘male only’ spaces. Pubs, football matches and such, whilst not being officially male only, tended to be such, so you could go there with like minded people, spout off and vent your spleen to a bunch of mates, without the worry of being overheard or upsetting someone listening in. You were away from the distractions of life, and it lifted lots of the pressure. These days there doesn’t seem to be such spaces. They’re full of women and kids, and as such men are less free to express themselves there.

Yes great thread. Rough time of year for fellow sufferers. I've had great counselling over the years. Be prepared to pay for the counselling to avoid delays. And I am happy to chat to anyone who wants to talk.

Great to see forums like this where mental health is talked about so openly.

Used to be very very active on here but as the last few years have been a bit rough on me ended up updating my profile to say why I was hardly on here anymore.

P.S Fortunately I am able to get regular counselling which has helped massively but am still looking forward to the day where I feel like myself again.
