That's often the case.

The manager isn't on the pitch and gone are the days where players careers are dependent on pleasing the manager.

It used to be the case where appearance money made up more than 50% of a players wages so the threat of getting dropped had real consequences. I forget which biography I read it in but that player had fallen out with the manager and was skint and was looking at loosing his house because of it.
