Hi,

Probably have an umbilical hernia - it's visible in my bellybutton.

At what stage should I begin to worry and see a doctor?

It looks damned unappealing when meeting guys.

If it concerns you, see GP.

Unfortunately, unless it's urgent the NHS won't do it.

My GP advised me to go private, which I was able to do fortunately...had it done within a few months rather than, probably, a few years.

Make an appointment to see your doctor straight away. Don't delay. Apart from looking awful they can be potentially dangerous if they get strangulated. Probably mean surgery which is fairly routine and successful. Had my umbilical hernia repaired 14 years ago and an inguinal one repaired last year. A bit uncomfortable but not really painful as long as you follow medical advice.

That's encouraging to hear. I do play high notes as a specialist thing on soprano cornet in a brass band. Lots of diaphragm and lung pressure.

Hi all. I stopped to saunas due to umbilical hernia.

I've hopefully got my operation in the next 2 weeks.

I'm not looking forward to it but I need it done.

Chances are you will have it done under a general anaesthetic so wont know anything about it until you come round. I was around your age when mine was done. Sent home same day. Felt fine. Didn't even have to take the pain killers they sent me home with. Had to take a fortnight off work--well still went in and did some admin as bored. And then on light duties e.g. no lifting; for 6 weeks. Bit of discomfort rather than pain. Naval still looks a bit odd, on very close inspection, 14 years later. No sex partner has ever noticed it though.

Afternoon, I have an umbilical one and made the decision to tell GP I want another referral (was advised to leave it alone originally) but I'm not happy undressing Infront of my missus, I want a holiday in the sun, non of which I can do while Belly button is poking out as it's making me anxious, fast forward a good bit and had a hospital referral again, really nice woman said I'd done the right thing and organised a pre op which I had last week , mine is being fastracked and expected to be in around another two weeks!!!!!

My question is what sort of time frame is usual to be off????

I drive HGV and other various heavy machinery with a bit of lugging to a degree but not excessive, will I be signed off for two weeks and what sort of advice for being able to do normal duties, I can avoid the lugging but driving in general I mean, also any ideas of time before I can fly as wanting to get some sunshine on my fat body at some point, thanks in advance

With the umbilical I was off work for 2 weeks and advised not to lift things for 6 weeks. Also told not to drive for 10 days [car] but think I did after around 4 days.

With the inguinal much the same but told not to lift anything heavy for 13 weeks. It had been a large hernia and I had waited 4 years thanks to Covid. Again driving after a few days and no problems.

You will have to lay off playing once surgery is done, I had an op in April to fix mine, about 12 months wait. Couldn’t run, or cycle for 4 weeks, all good now although stretching over head is slightly uncomfortable… will work that out with physio, get it seen to whilst it’s non urgent. As wild west says, leaving it can make things much worse.

i’ve had no end of issues when i had my umbilical hernia. about 8 years ago it started to become noticeable and spoke to a doctor they said don’t worry. then as time went on it got bigger so i saw a specialist he said “you’re fat… lose weight don’t bother me til you do” i complained to the nhs about that but yeah lost the weight to fit into their guidelines for bmi and still was told it will be a long wait and it could lead to complications, i ended up going on telly for it on the “bad skin clinic” on discovery channel where they were gonna fix it for me privately they were due to fix it and whilst waiting for my surgery appointment to be scheduled i got rushed into a&e because it had strangulated and could have killed me due to necrosis of the tissue.

so anyway the surgeon was unable to insert a mesh due to the nature of the emergency. and a year later it failed and the hernia came back with a vengeance. luckily i managed to get the operation within 4 months of diagnosis because of my history with the strangulation.

was healing up and then a week or two later ended up with MRSA and had to have a third operation

it’s been a rough one with my hernia

touch wood it’s been 9 months since that last operation and i have been ok

but i do still have a slight bulge under the skin when i lay down
