There was a weekly documentary series like WaW about the British Empire which as a kid I was fascinated by

And there was a weird cop show set in Amsterdam - van der Valk.

Even as a kid I genuinely enjoyed documentaries. World at War can still be found now, the music in the background is extremely gloomy and really helps set the scene.
