The speed limit for towing a caravan on the motorway or a dual carriageway is 60mph. It’s 50mph on a single carriageway.

Done three for speed awareness and one for motorway awareness.

As has been said before, a lot better than getting the points. The group ones, if they still do them, were a bit more interesting than on-line.

Did one a few years back as was doing 54mph in a 50mph stretch on the M1 at 5am. Funny thing was I was being overtaken by cars and lorries at such speed that it felt like I was going backwards.

Course was actually OK, especially learning more about stopping distances. Although I still raced the sat nav home.

I did one and definitely better than points.

I din’t lerarn much I didn’t know but I feel that the main benefit is that it focuses the mind as it’s easy to get complacent when you’ve been driving for years and years.

One thing that I wish people in general, and especially the traffic reporting people on the radio would get right - they are crashes/collisions NOT accidents! As the guy running my course said “An accident is when a squirrel falls through the sunroof of your car into your lap and bites you and you ending up in a ditch or hitting someone. As 99% of incidents involving vehicles are due to human error they are NOT accidents and are almost always caused by driving too fast/too close.

Oh!

In my defence, I was in a near-coma state for most of it.

I actually thought I might get out of it.

It was St Andrews Day, and the punishment sentence for doing 38 in a 30 was to attend Bristol civil service club for 3 hours.

Got myself all dollied up - face, heels, hair, the full works - big splash of tartan, too.

Looked nothing like the thuggish geezer in the driving licence ID I had to produce at the door.

This very droll geezer from Boooooooormingham refused to let me in because I did not look like the ID.

(There was nothing in the instructions about what clothes you had to wear)

Brilliant, I'm thinking. I've made the effort to get here - and YOU won't let me in. Byyyyeeeeeeeeee!

Then his equally boring mate came over to check what the problem was and just waved me through.

B*stard!

I was in a near-coma state for the next 3 hours.

The ex picked me up afterwards and we went off to the pub to celebrate the end of my detention.

I did one on-line recently after doing 28 mph in a 20 mph zone, obviously better than getting points, the course presenter was laid back, very informative and friendly and there was a good interaction with other course attendees from all over the UK.

All in all, it was informative and a worthwhile refresher of how to comply with driving regulations within legal boundaries and completing it in the comfort of home it was nice and relaxed too.

The on-line option is so much easier and no travelling or parking charges to contend with.

I've only been caught speeding once in 27 years of driving. Going down a step hill in a heavy vehicle in national speed limit and passed a smart speed camera at 58mph. Didn't realise my hill decent control hadnt switched on when i pressed the button for it. Of course cars could do 60mph but my limit was 50mph. Didnt even get offered the course - choice of points and fine or court. Another driver for same company did the exavt same but was 59mph and he got offered course. Was really annoyed

Some modern cars including my own have the legal speed limit for the zone displayed on the dashboard which flashes with an option of an audible warning if you exceed the speed limit.

We drivers know that we have speed limits and they should not be exceeded. We read the Highway Code … often years and years ago.

What the course does is remind you WHY there are speed limits and the consequences to other drivers, other road users and pedestrians of exceeding them. I think if drivers feel they know all this and that they are being patronised then it says more about them than the course because of course we all know that we have above average driving skills and the other drivers are rubbish, so …

My course was free.

First.. don't speed. But what if you're caught in one of their money traps? Ex. The road down from Aberdeen goes from 70-50-70 for around 100m. Some of the speed limits at low level is exceeded by cyclist and e-scooters. Not easy, but their tickets can be beat.

Did one in 2012 all it did was teach people how to get away with excessive speed. Mind when I did it. It was mixed those caught speeding or on phone ect. So mainly people caught on phone except the guy who had his laptop open working as he drove. Bit more lenient back then.

Here in Bristol, the enforcement people have moved on-line. When they send you a ticket, you can go onto a website and see the cam images of your vehicle in the speed trap. You can even download them as a souvenir.

Free or not, there is always the option of refusing the course and taking points on your licence instead. At the end of the day, a person is only on the course because they got caught breaking the law, and breaking the law often results in some form of penalty of time and/or money.

Never done any here in the UK but many many years ago I did an advanced police driving course which included defensive driving among some other strange tactics that may have been needed. It is funny how much, most of us, don't understand all the hidden dangers in driving nor how speed and engine power can save your life just as easily as take it lol.

There were some very useful things I learnt and some that I would think everyone here in the UK should learn and especially if travelling abroad. The most important is looking for small feet under the front of parked vehicles. Still shocks me how many people let their young kids run around parked vehicles on the side of roads. Another is Reverse parking. It became a big thing in Australia and in many towns there, you will have your vehicle towed away if you forward parked anywhere in town lol. The other thing many don't realise is the danger of driving on dirt roads or tarred wet roads with Auto Cruise control turned on.

I knew of the Cruise Control while contracting in Oz but only realised how dangerous it was when it all went wrong for me one night. Was driving along a dual carriageway with Cruise control on and came across a patch of road that had just recently had a short down pour. Was going round a slight bend in the road and the car did a quick slip lol which puts the speed from the wheels very low. The Cruise control kicked in and the V8 engine suddenly sped up throwing my car into a 90 Degree slide lol and went up onto the central reservation and continued to slam into a large lamp pole. I was only doing 60 Km/h on the road but the sudden stop and the sight of the Passenger door now leaning against my shoulder in the Drivers seat was a shock lol. I realised that if anyone was sitting in the passenger seat when that happened, they would have died instantly.

I did not phone up the insurer when I did a course.

I did phone up the insurer when I landed 3 points about 2 years later.

They told me it wasn't necessary - wait until the policy renewal comes round in six months' time, they said.

So I told them at the policy renewal date.

I didn't notice any real difference in the premium tbh.

True story when I did last speed awareness course which was an online one, there were about a dozen of us including a quite fit chavvy looking lad who appeared on screen in his dressing gown (everyone had to have cameras on throughout). He appeared to be lying on his bed. On several occasions he was told to get dressed and sit up properly but didn't comply and so the course leader ejected him and told him he fail and the points. Shame as it was just getting interesting!

Yeah done a couple so decided on the second one to get my moneys worth but pointing out all the hypocrisy of what they were doing, particularly when it got down to reducing speeds on the m4 for polluting cars, while they are driving past the most polluting steel works in Wales, they claimed that was a ‘different kind of pollution‘ so I pointed out with the plethora of electric vehicles, how do you justify that, or was it really, what appears to the over burden tax payer that this is more akin to a money generation scheme. But hey makes no difference to them, but made me feel better. Really can’t be afraid to speak up against these idiots.

"Not done a speed awareness course but have done a drive safe course. It has definitely changed the way I drive, I anticipate a lot more now on what other drivers are likely to do. Especially BMW & Audi drivers lol"

Nothing like a good old all encompassing stereotype. I imagine that you are someone who wears a hat whilst driving either a baseball cap or a flat cap

"I'm always worried about squirrels falling through the sun roof"

It's when they land in your crotch and start clawing their way down to the nuts that you really need to worry

Here, there or somewhere nearish March

I did one a few years ago. I found it interesting and learned a few things. I burst out laughing when a gorilla walked across the screen on one of the films. It seems I was the one in the room to have seen it … that was weird.

These days I have an intermittent fault on my speedometer but my car is so old I haven’t been able to get the part to replace it. I have to estimate how fast I am going when the speedo is having a rest.

"Twenty is plenty yeah if you're on a pushbike night everyone sleep well xxx "

Since the imposition of 20mph speed limits, accidents and fatalities have decreased substantially. If it costs drivers a few more minutes of their valuable time, it’s worth it.

"I learned that the towing limit for a caravan on a motorway is 50mph.

(I don't have a car and I don't have a caravan, but it might be useful in a pub quiz or summit)

The speed limit for towing a caravan on the motorway or a dual carriageway is 60mph. It’s 50mph on a single carriageway."

"Did one a few years back as was doing 54mph in a 50mph stretch on the M1 at 5am. Funny thing was I was being overtaken by cars and lorries at such speed that it felt like I was going backwards.

Course was actually OK, especially learning more about stopping distances. Although I still raced the sat nav home."

I believe that official stopping distances haven't been updated (to allow for better brakes and tyres etc) for decades ?!

"I've not been caught, but stray above the limit from time to time. But I do find those flashing signs attached to lamp posts that show your speed to be very useful. There should be a lot more of those.

Some modern cars including my own have the legal speed limit for the zone displayed on the dashboard which flashes with an option of an audible warning if you exceed the speed limit."

Even if car 'updated' frequently, these aren't usually 'aware' of roadworks, or other, temporary restrictions

Hereford

I learnt that the majority of the people doing it were more mature rather than boy racers which I was not expecting.
