Bristol East

Exactly the same as any other bar - you can sit in the corner on your own, or start up conversation with other people

Llandrindod Wells

Can be a bit daunting the first time. I know I was very nervous but I was 18 or 19 and it was still a time when being gay was legal [over 21] but still strictly taboo. The friendly barman guessed I was new and quickly put me at ease and introduced me to a small friendly group. After that it was plain sailing.

You walk in head held high. Act confident. …. Don’t let them see weakness or the whites of your eyes some can be like packs of hyenas .

Apart from that you’re just doing what they are doing going in for a drink maybe on the off chance of meeting someone. X

It's very different now to how it was when i were a lad.

In fourth year, some of the older ones at my school would tell us tales about queer pubs where the regulars weren't as interested in each other as they were in fresh meat: innocent, unsuspecting young men who were unwise enough to wander in there, like gazelles straying into a den of lions.

We were assured that one of their favourite traps was to nail a *half-crown to the floor. If one of their intended victims bent over to pick it up, he'd find himself touching his toes with his trousers and pants round his ankles, and a long queue of eager enthusiastic buggers waiting their turn.

i suspect that at the time, this story had assumed the status of an urban legend.

We believed every word, obviously

* A coin worth 2/6d in old money. You could buy a pint with it. Nowadays it would be replaced with a £5 note.

Here, there or somewhere nearish March

I went to a local gay pub every week for two years before anyone other than the barman spoke to me. I was just too intimidated to make the first move. Everyone else seemed to be there with friends. I persisted and eventually found some guys to talk to.
