It’s about pollution rather than size. The ones that are going to cost thousands are the biggest polluters. Cars that produce more than 76g/km of CO2 will face the highest charges and rightly so.

They could take their vehicle on the road every day - and yet they pay no tax whatsoever.

Yet here they are, whinging about needing to keep their perks.

I only checked the details for cars. For cars, the higher charges are entirely emissions based.

I suppose now EVs are (quite rightly) subject to the tax, they can’t really claim it’s an emissions based tax any more, but certainly the higher charges you referred to are down to emissions, especially for cars.

Also, all cars, including EVs, registered from April 1st 2025 that have a list price of over £40k are subject to the expensive car tax.

True, but the vast majority of people don’t take their cars or motorcycles out only once a year. I have 2 cars but one hardly moves off the drive. I still have to pay the full tax on it due to the rare occasion when I use it.

And most farm vehicles don’t go onto the road every day. I suppose the government are working on averages and probabilities.

Here are the exemptions:

tractors

agricultural engines

light agricultural vehicles used off-road

‘limited use’ vehicles used for short journeys (no more than 1.5km) on a public road between land that’s used by the same person

Okay so you hate farmers. No doubt you don't eat food unless, of course, it is imported. Last year I stayed at my sister's farm for two months as she had to have a major operation. I never participated in any farming as such [fed the cats and dogs] but I did sort out her tax returns ready for the accountant and I taxed all her vehicles. She paid full tax on her car and Landrover. The 3 tractors were exempt but they rarely travel more than half a mile on a public country lane between fields.

You are basically talking about the Clarksons and Dysons and other very rich people who have invested their fortune in land and now call themselves farmers. The vast majority of ordinary farmers may be 'asset rich' but not so in day to day life. Plus they pay taxes like everyone else.

It barely affects existing cars. It is first year rate es on new cars mainly. So if you are buying a £150k Porsche or something, you will be getting clobbered for about £2.5k on,the first years road tax. After that, it is £190 per year plus £390 for anything over £40k list price for five years.

It's been rigged for centuries.

The only people allowed to make laws in England were people who owned land.

So the whole system developed around protecting their own interests.

Along comes the working class to even things out and the land-owners start squealing about losing their perks.

Heart-broken . . .

How are we subsidising their wealth? The value of the estate doesn’t equate to income, I’m sure they pay income tax etc on their income exactly as any other self employed person does .

Because if they're not pay the tax that's due, the burden falls onto someone else to pay.

The public finances are stressed out after a decade of overspending and tax avoidance - and up pops a plummy-voiced, t-clad multi-millionaire on the telly to complain about the rich losing their tax perks, against a backdrop of other multi-millionaires joy-riding in their tax-exempt vehicles on the streets of London.

PR own goal.

64% of farm land in UK is managed by tenant farmers (source UK Gov)

So the majority of actual farm owners are wealthy landlords who have benefitted from sitting back and letting someone else do all the work whilst receiving a good income and whose inheriters have been exempt from paying inheritance tax - cannot see any valid argument in that continuing

Maybe someone has a robust argument as to why the remaining 36% owner occupier farmers should be exempt but other family owned business that require an equal life commitment to running them are not...

income & corporation tax are disparate, is not the point that was raised

the public anger is finding out about the farmers exemption from inheritance tax on land and property valued at millions when the rest of the population pays 40% on anything above £325,0000

Labour now closed this and the farmers have been protesting but not getting much public sympathy

i guess they were referring to 'your spokesman' as the person that is the Public figure the farmers protesting have elected to represent them to be interviewd about their objection to now having to pay inheritance tax,

whether or not you were involved in that election, unless you have a contrary opinion to being liable for the inheritance tax , then he is your spokesperson by default
