Personally I think it's the increase in games and the unbelievable fitness levels they need to reach. Every muscle, ligament and tendon is pushed to the max. Can't be much room for error in overstretching or taking knocks at speed. The game is so much faster now too.

As above. Too many games motivated by money. Used to be Saturday afternoon and maybe one mid-week but now in can be three a week for some teams. Everyone needs time for their body to recover between matches and they simply aren't getting enough time off

I take little interest in football but notice the same with my favourite sport of rugby. Players forever unavailable through injury. Doesn't seem to happen at the amateur, local level where the game can be just as rough if not more so.

I think people forget there used to be 24 then 22 teams in old 1st division before Premier League so teams played 8 then 4 more league games in a season. Also teams were allowed only one sub per game now it's 5 and squads are much bigger. So it's debatable how much more they actually play each season.

more games, more intensity as well. Players now are expected to run alot more than in games 20 years ago

It's the speed and power and sheer athleticism of the modern game played on fast firm watered pitches.

Athletes, race horses etc are trained to reach a peak performance for a specific day often months in advance.

Footballers are expected to achieve a constant peak of cardio fitness but limbs ligaments etc just can't take the constant wear and tear.

Back when 16 man squads played 42 league games, plus endless fa cup replays and other games, the pitches were grass sand and mud, very tiring but less jarring.

But many players were finished before 30 with injuries.

40+ games a season, a lot of training, constant strain on their muscles and joints, not enough recovery time, etc.

Neverwhere

Same is true of cricketers, especially fast bowlers despite the fact they bowl FAR fewer overs than the likes of Fred Trueman, Ian Botham, Dennis Lillee etc ...

Why is it the managers are sacked when its the players that are not scoring the goals?

I feel so sorry for them being paid thousands a week to play on effectively snooker surfaces. They’re all prima donnas these days but quite a few are fit

"Why is it the managers are sacked when its the players that are not scoring the goals?"
correct but why does the manager keep picking the same players certain teams a big squad to choose from but they pick the same

"Why is it the managers are sacked when its the players that are not scoring the goals?"

The players are essentially robots unless they’re really special, like the Messi’s, Neymar, etc.

Otherwise, they’re like robots and go out and do what they’re told to do

If the team is not playing well, it’s usually the managers tactics and team selection which is at fault

It's all that slow motion walking off of the pitch that they do when they are substituted to waste time

It’s like any sport where you’re pushing the machine to the absolute limit of performance, they will break easier, whether it’s footballer or an F1 engine they’re too finely tuned

And back in those days plenty of them liked a smoke and even a couple of pints the night before a game.

. A lot of it is premier league. You dont get that in lower decisions. It's like top athletes. They push there body to the limit. Or there bosses do

It's been said in here plenty of times but it's definitely the extra games players are made to play atm to many new formats coming out that increases games played and especially in a short amount of time in some cases

I don’t get this too many games thing, a lot of the time they are jogging and not really moving at top speed.

Some of it is down to the equipment too, lighter and lighter shoes mean less protection for feet and higher injury risk, and those stupid mini knee pads….

Put , to take th epremier league, the have a literal squad of physios, trainers, medical staff, dieticians etc to keep them healthy

Try ice hockey for one game for the physical exertion., then multiply that by 82 which is a regular nhl season playing sometimes 2 games a week minimum and travelling across the length of America and Canada.

I go to America and Canada to watch my team play and there is a hell of a lot of travelling in a short space of time. I watched three games in three different cities in 4 days.

a squad is only 25 players and some managers choose to have less.

Mate of mine is a coach at a championship football team. He says it's a combination of number of games and the fact that the players are trained to within an inch of their lives to be at their absolute peak, that even a little knock can actually be a lot more painful to them than it would be to a Sunday league player.

They're also able to pick up injuries in players easier due to technology too.
