Has it gotten worse?

All my friends seem to brag a lot lately about how much they drank and what time they’re getting home from a night out, last night I had 3 bottles of beer and went to bed before 10, i was knackered, I just don’t get the bragging rights when it comes to drinking alcohol 🤷‍♂️

Not sure it’s gotten worse, but I’m amazed at how people can afford to get bladdered so often.

I don't see the point of drinking too much nowadays. Getting old. Rather not Jane the hangover haha 🤭 Certainly don't brag about it. I know my limit and happy with just the one drink occasionally.

The less I drink the better.

I'm glad I can't hold my beer anymore.

I have noticed if I do have a drink I want to do it again, but if I don't I can just leave it alone no problem.

I don't think it's getting worse, some of the younger generation don't drink at all, while others can't get enough of it!

I don't drink much anymore, can't handle it now anyway. Much prefer the occasional wine and no headache in the morning!

There are fewer pubs and the culture of drinking has changed over the years. There are also far more things for young people to do now, and I suppose so many prefer online activities. Back in my dsy, drinking and smoking were the norm for all my friends

It started with generation z then gen alpha now we have gen Zalpha a mix of both these are people that were born in the digital age and the rise o social media. For many of them staying in is the new going out, they tend to buy alcohol in supermarkets etc then socialise on line even to the extent of dressing up as if they were going to a pub club disco etc, To the likes of oldies like me this seems odd but to them its normal.xxx

Love a good pint socially

All good. Just measured.

These days it's more pint vs tummy so a lot less than me earlier years which is good.

I’ve been trying to take a break from booze, did over a month before Christmas but I’ve indulged a little over the holidays. When you stop you realise how deeply ingrained it is in our culture, so much advertising 24/7, and so many social activities revolving around alcohol, especially in the run up to Christmas. Think I’m going to try Dry January now, and see how long I can keep going

I like a drink but it has to be what I would call good booze. A really decent cocktail. An ice cold Sauvignon. I want a drink I’ll enjoy, not alcohol for the sake of alcohol. Do like a cold beer from the fridge of course but if only have 1 or 2 a week.

Going to a pub or working men's club was a rite of passage in the valleys.

I started at 13 - 14. Drinking in the lane with mates.

Every bus stop was named after the nearest pub. So many shut down now.

Enormous chasm between North and South in terms of drinking culture, but I do find Northern Europe's drinking somewhat...gross and out of control. Probably prejudiced on my part, so I'll apologise and grab my coat on my way out. Cheers! 🍻🥴...🚪🧥🚶🏽‍♂️

I don't get the impression it's getting worse. So many closed pubs and a greater proportion of young people not drinking at all - if anything I'd say our towns and cities are a tad more peaceful than they used to be.

In my youth I used to be out drinking in pubs most nights. For years now, it's more like an average of once a week, maximum, with an occasional pint at home. I know my limits as well, so excess and hangovers have long-since been consigned to the past. Much the same applies to my mates.

On a connected note, having recently visited a London suburb, I'm horrified to find the price of a pint is well in excess of £7 - more expensive than central London and about twice what I'm accustomed to paying at home. Just how does anyone even afford it in such places?

Drinking is a way of life for many of us Scots. Onlookers may well say that's denial and it's alcoholism yet the camaraderie of the pub is something special and life affirming in many ways. Friendships are formed, an escape from the futility of existence is made possible.

The British drink culture is horrible and very unhealthy, I can't think of any other countries that are so bad as usual. People are often thought of as miserable or killjoys if they don't go along with it, it's so ingrained.

From time to time I enjoy a break in Benidorm but make sure I avoid the dire British areas, where people's whole holiday revolves around cheap booze in cheap bars. They have zero intelligence and zero class.

Yet they will be having a good time devoid of snobbery. Most will have a laugh with friends and family and not be interested in rucking.

Whether or not they will still have a butchers at social media when abroad, who knows.

It's pretty tragic when people on holiday abroad have to post on social media platforms though. Reeks of loneliness. Sad.

I rarely drink these days but many Brits on holiday do take advantage of the cheaper booze on offer and binge drink. It's not all us Brits however the Scandinavians push us close.

"My brother who is a Master Craftsman on the lash in Ibiza isn't an idiot. Neither are his pals.

Ibiza eh? It seems the local government there, and next door in Majorca have had enough with the booze culture. Whether or not that's an assumption based on class, or instead based on real facts I don't know:

'Majorca has restrictions on alcohol sales and availability in some of its holiday resorts, including:

All-inclusive drink limits: Guests at all-inclusive hotels in Magaluf, Playa de Palma, and El Arenal are limited to six alcoholic drinks per day, with three at lunch and three at dinner. Soft drinks are unlimited.

Advertising: Advertising that encourages alcohol consumption, such as open bars and offers, is prohibited.

Pub crawls: Organized pub crawls are banned.

Late-night sales: Late-night sales of alcohol are prohibited.

The rules were introduced in 2020 to address anti-social behavior caused by excessive drinking. The government said the rules would be in place for at least five years, but they have been extended to the end of 2027.

It’s a mindset really, I drank tons in my 20’s and 30’s and eventually decided to give up heavy drinking 10 years ago at the age of 47.

There was no great secret, occasionally I drink socially so it’s not a complete stop, but I did highly reduce my overall intake, with 4-5 months gaps in between a beer or 2.

I do feel a damn sight better though.

Not as many people in their teens and twenties are as bothered about going out these days, my nephews are more into going on nice holidays, travelling and going out for meals which is a good thing.

I don't drink much and haven't had a drop over Xmas but when I was younger it was the norm to go out whenever I got the chance and liked pubs and clubs.

Attitudes are changing and it's evident with all the pubs shutting.

Valid point re mindset.

For a lot of older fellas -who may be widowers-time in the pub is important to them. It gets them out of the house and a chance to socialise.

I’ve never quite understood why a man’s status or value in society would be judged based on the number of pints he can drink. I’ve always figured other character traits and behaviour are more important. Sadly a couple of lads that I grew up with and to whom drinking was everything didn’t make it past 30 due to alcohol related issues.

Never been a beer drinker, even as a kid it just went straight through me, so I spent my time in the gents. A night drinking spirits for me is usually about 3 in total. Enough to joy but not enough to give a hangover. Always remember Scotland has a Zero blood/alcohol limit for driving. Even one puts you over the limit here

Do drinkers think those who don't drink or can't handle their drink have no worth in terms of their contribution to society?

I've honestly never experienced this. For sure some do sneer at those who ain't drinkers but it's a bit of a stretch re contribution to society?

Yet elegance, style and taste are usually not viewed as working-class traits by those middle class/snobby types who think they are superior and like to look down their nose.

Which in essence is what you did when you described the behaviour of some in Benidorm.

When you've seen people acting in a loutish way, are you seriously trying to tell me you thought they were middle class?

Yep 👍 I’d agree mate but you also get the quiet ones who can handle themselves they just don’t need the drink inside them to prove it.

It’s the loudmouths that are tanked up that are always the weakest 😁

He’s accomplished everything that’s been thrown at him and has proved to the world that he’s one of the greats.

He hasn’t got anything else to prove although after Dubious showed him a total lack of respect then I think he might just want more fight 😁
