Extreme Weather Warnings

North London (outer)

We seem to be getting so many of these that they're becoming meaningless. Surely it's normal to expect some cold weather in winter.

Today there are warnings of snow, rain and ice throughout the country, including a yellow warning for ice in place from 16:00 today until 10:00 tomorrow, covering northern Scotland including areas within Grampian, Highlands, Eilean Siar and the Shetland Islands.

No shit, Sherlock, Shetland is closer to Norway than Edinburgh, and is as far north as St Petersburg, Russia, or Anchorage, Alaska.

So far it's 2 degrees here, still, and with no sign of precipitation.

"Snow in Bristol now "

Bristol Airport flights suspended.

And the obligatory collisions on the M5 motorway due to crap drivers who can’t drive to the conditions.

I've just had an idiot tailgating me while the snow is coming down thick and fast here. Driving felt like an episode of star trek

Tiny bit of snow here. Having visited eastern European countries in the winter well we must be soft here to worry about it. Seen it real deep and they carry on

It's a farce it's winter FFS. If it snows we are all going to die. If it doesn't snow it's global warming and we are all going to die

They screened the dads army film with the original cast and put a warning out about the use of dated inappropriate language which some viewers might find upsetting. This should upset them. Tell them to eff off Pike

Where's the harm in issuing warnings?

It may stop some people from travelling, getting stranded and needing rescuing.

It may allow people to prepare. It may allow people to be mindful of vulnerable neighbours.

We get these warnings now because we have more 'extreme weather events' and because the forecasting technology has improved.

Just because you aren't affected doesn't mean others aren't

I think they have to tell us because if you went out to get a Costa and you didn’t take your coat and felt a chill because of the cold weather or your hands started to shake from cold and you drop your money in the line and you get filmed by an onlooker and then cyber bullied then they are open to litigation.

They are just protecting their own backs legally it’s obvious

Progress is a comfortable disease.

Is heavy snowfall the norm for certain parts of the country? It hasn't been for yonks.

Winter weather has changed considerably in my lifetime.

I agree , these ‘ alerts’ are really becoming background noise. In a few weeks time it will be pollen, few weeks after that UV , then drought … . There is a difference between informing calmly and sensationalist warnings.

I fail to see what is wrong with issuing a weather warning that ice for example might be a significant problem. Surely this enables elderly people to make a decision whether or not to leave their homes?

Imagine the outcry if warnings didn't exist?

It's also worth noting the difference between warnings and coverage.

The warning are fine. No issues with them.

And quite frankly , where we’ve had mild weather over Xmas, them boom - overnight 10inches of snow, I’m more than happy to be for “warned”

But people need to stay grounded with them. They’re are helpful weather messages. And should not cause mass panic.

I don't think this is extreme weather. We only need the warnings for danger, or major travel disruption.

Aye many a time when I was a lad, wellies and duffle coat on, trudging miles through the snow to school, it was never cancelled in those days, it was seen as a failure of character to give in to the weather by teachers of old, many of whom had fought in battle against the enemy during the War and as sure as hell they weren't going to surrender to a foot of mere snow! God forbid!

I remember getting sent home from school on a few occasions in the 60s and 70s because of snow. We did like in a very rural area so most pupils and staff had to travel to the school whereas in towns walking was still an option so it may have been different.

No there isn't as much snow as there was back then, the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia as was) were covered in snow from mid November through to the end of March, these days it's just a few days of the year.

Indeed we are but what's the actual relevance to weather warnings that allow people for example to consider whether or not to travel?

Or when ice is forecast enabling those who might struggle walking to stay indoors?

Well, there's plenty of people on here WANTING to be controlled, etc. and being kept "pliable" in cold weather is a good thing surely? AND, if you're 'brainless,' it's very handy to have as many warnings as possible, to keep you on the right path! BOYCOTT Saul Alinsky I say (whoever he his: no time to look him up whilst reading all these helpful warnings)! 🤧😵‍💫🤪

All the numerous warnings this weekend, but nobody cancelled the football fixtures to prevent the unnecessary journeys in winter weather so it can't have been that much of a risk in the first place.
