Ofcom has published what it calls a "non-exhaustive" list of technologies that may be used to verify ages, which includes:

Open banking

Photo ID matching

Facial age estimation

Mobile network operator age checks

Credit card checks

Digital identity services

Email-based age estimation

The rules specifically state that "self-declaration of age" is no longer considered a "highly effective" method of checking ages - and therefore is not acceptable.

It also states that pornographic content should not be accessible to users before they have completed an age check.

It should also be noted it's any website that it could appear on. So all social media as well. I think it will be a bit of a wild west moment for at least a year while every website is required to do it

It's also not just pornography. It's any website that stirs up hatred. ofcom have kept it incredibly vague because I think they know it's unenforceable.

Anywhere there is a vague chance that something could become adult content essentially has to age check. I hated it when the Tories came up with it, and I hate it more that Labour are following through with it.

Like a lot of these things it will be circumnavigated by using a VPN so it looks like you are logging in from another country. Same as when they outlawed the websites for downloading torrent files, it didn’t slow anyone down it just meant that the VPN companies got more customers.

Exactly. Apparently when Pornhub had to do something similar in Louisiana in the USA, its traffic dropped by 80%.

I'd imagine smaller websites (like Fabguys) haven't got the resources to introduce it, especially in under six months.

They have explicitly said that payment, even though connected to a bank account, is not sufficient evidence of age.

I read the BBC article and it mentions email verification as being one of the methods which can be used. I then went on to a site named Verifymy and read up about email verification.

It says over 98% of on line users have an email account. They can estimate the age of the email account holder in less than 4 seconds.

What do you folks think would this be a safe way forward? I’m really not keen on giving my credit card details to porn companies.

I have to say I think this is a good idea.. protecting younger children from things they shouldn’t see has got to be a good thing. Maybe we will get some sites setup to allow you to verify your age centrally, a sort of anonymous proof of age application.. maybe we may even see a reduction in pricks/idiots on these sites if there is an extra step needed to be verified.

I have not read the article but I would hope as a uk website fabguys would be required to verify all joiners comply with uk law, this would help prevent people try to circumvent the laws by hiding their location behind a VPN.

I don’t think that they would do this if it wasn’t necessary, we hear all the time about children being abused or worse, imho this can only be a good thing

It’s already law, so it’s set in stone. Any porn site visible to UK citizens will have to comply or be blocked. And fines are highly punitive. I make porn websites and I’ve been planning for compliance, so I’m ready.
