Prep usage as a bottom…

Hi guys and girls,

I am active typically once or twice a week and I periodically attend parties. Until now I have relied on condoms but I am pretty sure partners have not always been careful/honest. I have been lucky up to now but I want to stop relying on luck and manage the risk, I also plan to attend parties were BB is more common. To this end I have an appointment for a prep assessment at my local sexual health clinic later in the week.

My questions for those of you who bottom, what is your preferred regime, daily or 2 2 1 and why?

I’m considering asking for vaccinations while I’m there - what would you recommend?

Any other advice you care to offer greatly appreciated

I take it daily - I am less likely to forget in that routine.

When I was referred to the clinic, they vaccinated me for Hep A, Hep B and Monkey Pox, from memory.

There is no vaccine for Hep C, but the NHS says the risk of transmission via anal sex is low/remote.

The staff will guide you through it all.

There is a slight risk from PrEP of of muscle or bone atrophy, and kidney side-effects, apparently.

So I take a Vitamin D supplement every time I take the PrEP pill.

They check my kidneys every 6 months, and it's all fine.

Hope this helps.

The clinic's are very informative about all your questions and give good advice on the various vaccines.

Most, if not all, the Prep failures are due to those taking it on demand and not following the strict routine, so would advise taking it daily. But there can be issues taking Prep with it working your kidneys hard, so hence they regularly check your kidney function. But again, they will give you all the advice for your own circumstances.

I've been taking Anal BB for 40 years and went onto Prep when it first came out on Trial. Due to my very random active sexual play times, I take them daily. Less chance of missing a tablet that way.

Winter used to be a bit of a struggle for me, but I've found it less so since taking a daily Vit D supplement to offset any risk from the PrEP. That's been a very welcome side-effect.

Thanks all, was prescribed prep today subject to tests. Daily use as opposed to event based. Also picked up an armful of vaccinations.

I am more than 5 years on daily prep and touch wood all good so far. The good thing about daily prep is that I can take it during the day at anytime I want , on demand you need to be careful about the time from the start till to the end and All need to be taken at the same time . If you are good in timing and you have less sex that all pre planned , then on demand would be a better option for youxhope this helps

I used to take it daily but I stopped because up here the chances of meeting guys are slim when you are a fussy top like me and there aren't many guys around to start with.

I noticed that it reduced my sex drive too, and so did a couple of mates of mine who used to take it daily.

I've heard of a few saying they had side effects, mostly headaches etc. but never heard of it reducing sex drive. I suppose we are all different but so far no side affects for me and none from anyone I personally spoken with.

If you’re on event prep, if you go away on holiday and plan sex most days, do you just then take it daily?

Not sure why some are saying 2 2 1 for event based its 2 1 1.

Also doses should be taken at the same time each day.

The first 2 should be taken at least 2 hours before sex and no more than 24 hours before.

before they will prescribe it they will ask a lot about your lifestyle and who you have sex with. Be honest and do what they tell you

Yeah, the NHS has a page about PrEP and the "at risk" groups eligible to receive it.

I was eligible after being referred to the clinic by the hospital where consultants spent 3 days trying to figure out my poor state of health, before discovering I had Stage 2 syphilis.

I've taken it daily for over a year and experienced no side effects. Not noticed any lessening of libido 😃

Couldn't rely on 2 1 1...couldn't depend on my memory, but more importantly tricky for unexpected hook ups!

(I do get headaches with sildenafil).

Not good. So far not had the need for Sildenafil or Viagra but have tried them a few times. Fortunately never got any headaches but certainly had a problem losing my hard on lol

The only problems I've had is with the small brown bottles. I used to use them a lot and found they did make me go soft and then found they gave me a very bad sore throat so now never use them

As a top I have daily Prep. I suffered with major anxiety worrying about condoms failing. Daily dosing is just a routine now with my morning coffee.

The clinic doctor where I go is lovely. Its peace of mind for me playing the field, trying to be responsible having routine STI checks is a good thing. It might be also worth asking for the mpox and hep vaccine. If you're under 45 you should also be offered a HPV vaxx.

I have to admit it does feel more sensual when fucking a guy. It's personal preference when it comes to how you take your prep. Discussing this at your prep appointment will answer and questions you have. X

I take daily prep, get tested every three months at my sex clinic, the staff are fabulous. I had all vaccines mpox etc , as a gay bottom it is common sense to look after your sexual health, if you are thinking of getting checked go you won’t regret it.
