Why do gays love Doctor Who

First let me say that I’m a long-term Doctor Who fan way back to Tom Baker as the fourth doctor and way before I knew I was gay but my question is why do you think there’s such a following on the gay community for Doctor Who?

This isn’t a conversation about the current incumbent and how good or bad the program is now I’m just interested in why gay guys gravitate towards Doctor Who

From an interview

With Russell T Davies at the helm, the TV impresario that brought us Queer As Folk, this should be no surprise - yet it's not immediately obvious to all. As a lifelong fan, Davies wanted to make something that would be a success and appeal to all members of society, but that most of all remained true to the show's ethos of liberality and open-mindedness.

Issues such as sexuality and even race were considered too controversial for a family show in the late eighties. But now these topics are commonplace, even in children's dramas. Davies has given us the same old Doctor - a man with your best interests at heart - but updated for the 21st century: a gay's best friend.

Do we? Can't say that I do. Loved it as a kid but got a bit bored with it as a teenager. Watched it when it was first revived but soon gave it up. Watched one episode with this latest guy. Could not make head nor tail of it.

I’m going to hazard a guess that (s)he is an outsider and things usually work out for him/her. The Doctor knows stuff other people don’t and is often misunderstood. A bit like being gay?

For the record, I conform to this stereotype having been a follower of the series since I was eight years old in 1963. I also spent my pocket money on Superman comics as a kid.

As a young kid, I remember watching William Hartnell who played the first Dr Who, the program and the notion behind it just never appealed to me then and just hasn't since.

Think the modern Dr Who as it’s aimed at flamboyant etc

Whereas years ago it was a sci fi type drama

No musical element

Op, I can honestly say I don't know anyone that watches Doctor Who...gay or straight.

From what little I know, the main fan base seems to be more of the geeky intellectual type, similar to the 'Big Bang Theory' tv show characters.

I noted Dr Who gets mentioned a few times in that show.

It did used to be good when it was a straightforward kids show with easily followable storylines. Now the writing is so convoluted with so many references to things that happened seasons ago that, if you just happen on an episode, it’s unintelligible.

I have very much a love hate relationship with Who, I was brought up with Pertwee but it wasn’t until Tom Baker that I really loved the show, I stuck with it through most of my teens, but kind of fell out of love (or found other things more interesting like sex) But did return to the new Who with Eccleston and the show was at is best with Tenant’s tenure, it just never got better than that for me, pretty much once RTD left Moffat took over the show just seems to have scripts that were trying to be too cleaver or even nonsensical in places, particularly with Whitaker’s tenure. That’s not putting down some very talented actors like Smith and Capaldi. But just switched off. I am attempting to watch the Ncuti episode, some good some not so, but have always wanted to find a play buddy in here that is also into Sci fi like Who, Trek and Wars.

I'm gay and a Doctor Who fan, but I can't stand modern Doctor Who. Doctor Who died after McCoy, in my opinion -- and even that's stretching it. It's an appalling written mess.

Isn't it mainly aimed at kids/young teens?

You'd think the BBC had learned by now not to indoctrinate/groom impressionable young minds.

Kids are already bombarded with all of that through the State education system.

Ah...the Daily Mail double bill...the BBC and teachers.

Our national broadcaster and those charged with the education of our future trashed as indoctrinating/grooming impressionable young minds.

As Buffalo Springfield sang..Paranoia strikes deep, Into your life it will creep

It's Doctor Who, a science fiction programme for all the family. There be monsters, time travel, scary statues, Daleks, Cybermen, queers, straights, a phone box which is bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. It's just entertainment.

They don’t. Hardly anyone does these days.

Average viewing figures for 2024 were the lowest ever at less than 4 million.

It’s just that currently Dr Who fits the BBC agenda of promoting minorities, so they push the programme, and the minorities it is ‘representing’.

But basically the show is losing viewers, and will eventually be sold or axed.

Women do keep saying there are fewer good roles for them than for men, so they are in a minority in that area

It tries way too hard to be progressive and has just become a delivery system to get 'The Message' over.

Should take a break for at least 5-10 years and maybe come back with some writers who actually understand the sci-fi genre and the character of Doctor Who himself.

Same thing has happened with the Star Wars & Star Trek franchises ... which have been pimped out to the point of being unrecognizable from the thing that made them hugely popular in the first place.

Is it not just that more is made of the gay following?

(okay so I’m bi, but) I like it, I like Madonna, I like rollercoasters and Wicked. They don’t necessarily make me gay but a lot is made about the massive gay following of these things. I imagine there’s a massive straight following too, but maybe in some circumstances straight men avoid acknowledging their fandom for fear of being labelled “gay”?

Watched it in the Baker -Davison era and loved it- but that was about it being a great show for a kid rather than any attraction or identification to 'an outsider', and I watched it till I was about 14 or 15- most of my mates at school did- but then there wasn't much on the TV, VHS was relatively new, there was no internet and 4 channels on TV.

It then became shit, and was deservedly cancelled for it. I looked at the modern reboot and there was nothing there for me.

I know RTD always reckons he's been trying to promote the gay aspect /draw of it, but, most people I have spoken now hate what it's become. There's much better shows out there, and I think it needs to go away for 20 years or so, then see if people want it back.
