Tattoos yes or no?

I'm pretty much covered in tattoos.

From shoulders down, excluding my hands at the wrist.

I can wear normal attire, and nobody would know.

Find it odd that many love them, many think they are horrible and wreck lives.

Can anyone reasonably respond?

Or will it the usual modern world of nothing good to write.

Kindly remember for many, each tattoo may or might not hold signicant memories.

For instance 4 of mine are portrait memorial pieces. And several more are images of my children and grandchildren.

Others I have have meaning, some a lot more than others.

Some I hold no real attachment too, as I was in a bad place.

And just had them

Do you have your hole tattooed, as your name suggests? Is there any significance in it if you do?

I think it's a fairly generational thing, Darling, so my view may not be of much relevance to you.

Honestly, I think marking yourself permanently to signify a deep emotion is a mistake. That partner - or even that Child - may have a different relationship with you in 5 or 10 years. But I'm old and cautious- live your life by your rules, Hun!

The evidence clear if you look at my profile picture

The significance is in reality it is a cover up.

Of a cartoon character

Longer story behind that one.

Cover up was because my entire torso is orientally styled.

My legs are themed.

My arms as random as it gets.

I have actually had several of my pieces included into various tattoo magazines

Fair point.

Myself I wasn't in a great place.

And choices would have probably been different.

But what I did find, although initially only wanted a big dragon.

Which actually took 5 1/2 day sessions.

I found it a great distraction from an overwhelming pain.

Became a bit of an addiction to be honest

Thanks for your honesty. I'm not sure about a generation thing.

I had my first 2 when I was in my early 20's.

Newborn on the way took priority

Little over a decade ago, I was earning ludicrous money.

For me less is more. I love 1 or 2 nice tartoos but full tattoos really for me remove the natural beauty of the human body. But as they say horses for courses.

I worry, as you alude to in your message, that overdoing tattoos can be associated with methal health problems or addictive personalities. Certaonly historically tattooing like this was regularly done by criminal gangs. Lots of the Yakuza in Japan and the Paramilitaries over here.

I wonder if something less permanent would be any good? You could freshen them up when they fade and if you fancy a change, then it's easier to do. I fancy a bumble bee on my right calf, to be frank its quicker to get a transfer done and less painful. Just my thoughts and I have no other thoughts about whether others should or should not have them

My last tattoo I went up to Liverpool for.

Stopped in a hotel by Anfield which cost as much as the tattoo

£150 the final price.

Estimated at £300.

But was smaller than expected

And that was with a pretty famous multi award winning artist.

Must admit I know him well from the conventions

They do nothing for me.

I can appreciate the artistry in them, but the idea of permanent marking my skin doesn’t appeal.

I do ‘technically’ have a tattoo. It’s just a small dot in the middle of my chest. A lingering reminder of radiotherapy. But that’s more than enough.

3 of my kids have tattoos, and they are really happy with them, but for me they were perfect before the tattoos, and you can’t improve perfection.

I like tattoos done well. Some are seriously impressive and can be attractive.

For me they should have meaning. I have a dragon on my shoulder… I’ve always been fascinated by dragons in art. I was in my early 20s and I’m glad I did it. I’m probably too old to have more done now and they are seriously expensive.

I’d say pick your artist carefully and don’t buy cheap. I’ve seen so many hideous amateur-looking tattoos, that look cheap and tacky..

Sir y Fflint - Gogledd Cymru

I'm very much of the opinion of a much older generation on the subject which was that generally it was only servicemen, convicts ruffians and foreign tribesmen who permanently maimed their bodies with tattoos!

As a young guy I think my strict parents would have ousted me if I'd dared to have one! Along with the subject of sexuality the subject was totally taboo along with blaspheming and swearing too!!

So my mind has been thus influenced, although of course, in the intervening half-century, the world and opinions have very much changed and so many taboos of old including the now popular one of body art and tattoos are now perfectly acceptable, although my old mind still cannot be swayed to see them in the light of modern society.

I don't mind them but not to much ie all over. Doesn't put me off seeing anyone having them, but it really doesn't do to much for me.

I remember in high school most dads had their army unit insignia Tattooed on their upper arm. So was normal curiosity that we experimented with them. To test our theory of how they were made, I volunteered to have a Tattoo of a male and female sign with the t and - touching each other on my upper arm lol. We believed it was done using a Pin with some cotton thread wrapped around the sharp end, then dipping that into an ink bowl from school and continuously stab the area for the Tattoo. It did actually work well and I survived without lead poisoning lol but did receive a sharp smack around the ear from the Headmaster and my dad lol. Although it worked and looked bold, it was very often mistaken for spelling OXO lol go figure. But then later when the country changed, it was pointed out that it looked like the waring symbol between the two main tribes in the country. So had it changed to one of the military units insignia.

Like them on what I would call 'rugged men' as sometimes they look a bit silly on twinks. When I had mine done I was in my early 20s. In those days most servicemen had them but very few civilians. Mostly on arms. Occasionally the back or chest. Never on hands, face or neck.

Not keen on too many or what I would call 'body jobs'. Also not keen on them on legs.

Each to their own obviously, but I find it strange that people would not be interested in a guy just because he had a tattoo(s)....it certainly would not be a criteria that I would judge anybody by.

I’m amazed at how many people are against tattoos tbh. I have a full sleeve and a medium sized tattoo on my opposite arm, both which can be covered up by wearing a jumper or long sleeve shirt

I certainly wouldn’t turn down someone just as they had tattoos. Although I’m not against them; I’m not a fan of hand , neck or face tattoos especially if it’s the only ones they have; it just seems to me it’s someone trying to look cool if anything….. but each to their own
