Without mentioning names or particular incidents it seems that conditions in HM custodial establishments allow too much freedom to inmates. Freedoms which seem to allow inmates to harm officers of the prison service. How soft has this country become?

VERY!

Prisoners seem to get anything and everything they want claiming they are suffering ADHD and or other Mental Health issues.

I think, for that particular prison, this will be a turning point.

You can't win in the prison service.

The prisoners loss of freedom is their punishment, this time in prison is meant to give them time to reflect on their lives and return into society as reformed people. Inside the prison system there is little chance of this happening, because of lack of staff, lack of discipline, lack of control, lack of the necessary resources to help with education, training, mental health, the necessary courses, the time, and at times even the will to make a difference.

The public don't really care as they are off our streets. The prisoners are just trying to survive, much the same as they do outside the prisons.

There is no easy answer, but more staff paid a better wage, where they are not tempted into corruption. Stricter discipline, with the back up on the government and the management to enforce it. More employment opportunities inside the prison with a set road to employment on release. The will of the prisoners to actually want to get out of the cycle of crime and punishment.

Anyone see the BBC article about the Manchester bomber attacking 3 prison officers whilst doing kitchen duties.

2 of the officers given life threatening injuries.

All cat A prisoners should be given hannibal lecter treatment.

Tommeh wants to be released as he can't handle his bird. Imagine the old-school villains of yesteryear going to court begging for mercy from the dastardly solitary. It just wouldn't have happened.

He's a laughing stock. Fake hard man, fake political prisoner.

But he's a journalist...

Any prisoner attacking staff , should immediately go into solitary confinement, all visits cancelled and their sentence increased by 10 years for every offence .

Sadly there are some prisoners who are irredeemable, beyond reform or reparation and we need to reconcile ourselves to harsher consequences for these prisoners.

And the cost to the taxpayer for a few moments of madness?

Adding 10 years on could make those lags even more bitter and determined to do worse...

Seems like there may have been a failure of risk-assessment. Should a prisoner, with such a lack of morality or conscience that he was happy to commit mass-murder of children, ever be considered safe or rehabilitated enough to have access to potential weapons?.

The madness in this particular case was allowing this prisoner anywhere near a kitchen. They can be very dangerous places with knives, boiling oil, boiling water etc etc. I agree an extra 10 years for each offence might be a step too far but solitary confinement and a loss of al privileges would not be.
