I was tempted to post more, but it was already a long post and I didn’t want to hijack the thread with personal reminiscences. But since you ask, there are a couple I’d like to share. People will certainly sympathise with the first one, but prepare for a long post. After a couple of years our sex life was beginning to drift a bit but we still had a great time. Then late one night I got a call saying S. had been arrested in North Texas (Denton in fact, which you may know), for propositioning a police officer at a notorious rest area [cottage] on the interstate highway I-35. He’d invited the guy back to his truck and as soon as he unzipped, the badge was flashed and the cuffs came out, not in a good way. I had to send $800 to a bail bondsman to get him out, which was a lot 30-odd years ago, especially as I was a student working half-time. A few years later it turned out that this was a small part of a major corruption scandal. The police were in cahoots with a corrupt bail bondsman. They nabbed literally hundreds, maybe thousands of men over a number of years at that rest area, but the cases were never brought to court. The police just sat on them and shared the cash with the bail bondsman, knowing that none of the accused would ever push for their case to come to court. I suppose the cases reached some kind of statute of limitations and expired. It all came to light because of some violent incident but I don’t recall how. If you were living there about 1990 or so you might have read about it in the Dallas Morning News. The experience made us feel closer for a while, but I suppose the writing was on the wall. Eventually S. met someone at a rest area and decided to make the change of horses. The last I heard, about 8 years ago now, was that they were still living at their house in the Texas Hill Country. So he found the right guy and I’m happy for him, though I wasn’t particularly at the time.
