Discrimination on this site

Okay, I'm not pointing any fingers. But does anybody else experience discrimination on here? I have ADHD, possibly ASD. I've noticed that when I've posted comments or had conversations, I've been discriminated against because I'm different. How many other people who may have the same disability or difference experience the same thing?

I may be different, but I'm just like everybody else. I'm approachable, friendly, but very precise. And when people ask me questions, others don't like that very much.

No, they all think I am a slag.

Can you give an example of what you mean, how you are treated differently from everyone else?

In general terms, people disagreeing with each other and showing contempt, anger, disgust, incredulity, indifference, etc. is not discriminatory. In what way (examples might be helpful) is discrimination obvious?

Yes this is a common problem on most social media or text-only communication. Lot of people don't fully read or pause to interpret. Quirky humour or sarcasm sometimes missed too.

I’m sorry to learn that you feel discriminated against… but as some others have already asked, it’s difficult to understand what you actually mean without some explanation or examples or evidence.

The bit I’ve quoted is the bit that reads the most strange. Where were the people asking you questions..? In the Forum? Who were they? And who is the shadowy FabGuys cabal that don’t like you being asked questions…?!

I was diagnosed with adhd in 1997, autism in 2000 and dyslexia in 2022. I know all about the impulsive decisions and interpretations. I also know right from wrong and don't use it or pretend that my bad decisions or bad behaviour is somehow excused by slapping a label on me.

I've been reading a really insightful book, The Psychopath Test - A Journey Through the Madness Industry, by Ron Johnson.

In essence, he looks at how psychiatry has tried to diagnose every single aspect of behaviour that might be considered as a deviation from the norm, and then attached a label to it.

It's become a gold mine for the Pharma industry - you get diagnosed with a condition to explain your behaviour or mindset, and then prescribed pills for life to "normalise" you.

It's a real eye-opener.

I will post a quote from “Mean Girls” (the musical)

[song: I’d rather be me]

“I don’t need your ‘good opinions’, I have plenty of opinions,

Everybody has opinions but, that doesn’t make them true.

What’s true is being me, and I’d rather be me than be with you”

Try to never take to heart what someone on the internet says. Most of us are wankers.

Oh; and don’t feed the trolls.

(From a fellow AuADHDer who has battled his RSD down with the line ‘Yeah, but I’m a •fucking• delight!’)

Sending love.

Yes people do get discriminated against on here. They get told 'No, I'm not interested in you'. One person's discrimination is another person's choice and discernment. Unfortunately too many people can't handle 'No' and they label the person who has dared to reject them as a time waster.

100% accurate. Some seem to think having any sort of life outside of this site makes you a default timewaster.

Classic example of a message chain recently -

Me - Hi

Guy - you free?

Me - got a few things on, message me after 1

Guy - its 1 now, you free. I need to drop a load

“That’s not butch enough for us leather Marys.”

“The name is not reflective of my gay struggle.”

“Is there a version just for Lesbians?”

“Will the edge of the currency be coloured pink and turquoise to reflect trans identities?! I expect not!”

Guess we all discriminate because of personal taste. Some don't like fat, thin, muscle, twinks, older etc etc. Some of us, myself included, could be accused of discriminating against cd/tv. Not nasty, blatant discrimination. They just don't rock our boat.

Mental conditions take many forms. Few of us are totally perceived 'normal'. Guess there is a fear element. If you know someone has something like ADHD or autism you may be a bit fearful of how they behave or react. Also, of course, these conditions take many forms from severe to barely noticeable. I have a very good friend who is autistic. I wouldn't have guessed if he had not told me. Highly intelligent but a bit socially awkward. I know someone else whom I am told has ADHD but he seems fine to me.

Shouldn't the shadowy cabal be called the 'Fabal'?

My votes for their enforcers to all look like they're from a Tom Of Finland illustration

Oh I quite like that. “Is he, or isn’t he, one of The Fabal…?!”

Theses heavy duty gay police will be very reminiscent of Tom of Finland. Imagine Erik Estrada in Maskulo.

" … Im waiting for the first gay crypto currency

Any suggestions as to a suitable name ?

Dorothycoin

And here it would all start off again:

“That’s not butch enough for us leather Marys.”

“The name is not reflective of my gay struggle.”

“Is there a version just for Lesbians?”

“Will the edge of the currency be coloured pink and turquoise to reflect trans identities?! I expect not!”

The endless arguments about the emblem on the front…

Within 6 weeks of the launch of DorothyCoin, we’d have:

Sappho-bit

FilthyLucre

TrannyDosh

Gay Moolah

FruitLoot

(I should probably trademark some of these names now..)

"

Too late, I've already taken FruitLoot! 😈👍😂

"ADHD is not a disability!!

ADHD is recognised as a disability in the terms of the Equality Act 2010"

I was diagnosed in 2009 ADHD I personally don't see it as a disability, perhaps a conduct disorder. what the diagnosis did was help me get behavioural coaching (behaviour in the sense of learning how to deal with things like impulse control emotional regulation and stabilisation and focus) anyone that can't understand themselves and their place in the world is disabled or at a disadvantage so letters mean nowt.

I was diagnosed with it years ago when was with the public sector, had to go for assessments with an outside agency etc.

I never take reasonable adjustments or anything like that and don't even mention it, it's not a problem, as long as I'm learning something or doing something I'm interested in then it's fine and I'm better than the rest but if it's something I couldn't care less about then that's reflected lol

"Okay, I'm not pointing any fingers.

Ignore them, many are like school children on here trying to gang up on others, this is the only place they actually have a life, so just ignore them.

You will realise it's the same ones every time and they are the dregs of society so don't let them effect you.

Simply ignore them."

....

...

The same ones every time... Does that include posters who get lifed off only to return under a new name? The evidence is they are arch recidivists to a man.

In terms of classing people as the 'dregs' and judging their lives away from the forum, you don't know how they live, what they do for a living so forth and so on...

"

I've been reading a really insightful book, The Psychopath Test - A Journey Through the Madness Industry, by Ron Johnson.

In essence, he looks at how psychiatry has tried to diagnose every single aspect of behaviour that might be considered as a deviation from the norm, and then attached a label to it.

It's become a gold mine for the Pharma industry - you get diagnosed with a condition to explain your behaviour or mindset, and then prescribed pills for life to "normalise" you.

It's a real eye-opener."

Sara, I do sometimes wonder if some people's personalities are being labeled.

Some people need help through medical intervention, and it's great they get that help, but for many others, and I'll include myself here, 'It's they the way we are'

The problem these days is that there are an awful lot of uneducated, entitled people around who seem to think that nothing can be said or done that they either don’t like or disagree with. They then just claim it’s discrimination without even knowing the dictionary meaning of the word.

Yes, that was what the author concluded, too.

Just the natural differences between people

But now they are labelled with a medication pathway attached.

We are all different. We all have abilities and disabilities.

It's about treating others with kindness, even if we disagree with them or don't like them or an opinion.

If we know that someone is differently abled we should take that into consideration when communicating with them.

Righto…

Well, those are lovely words and very fine too in theory.

But as much of the thread above discusses… it’s the issue of not being aware someone might be differently abled… How do you take into consideration something you don’t know…?!

Beautifully said. Your words capture the essence of empathy and understanding. Recognising and respecting individual differences, while treating everyone with kindness and consideration, is truly fundamental.

By doing so, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all, regardless of their abilities or challenges. Thank you for sharing this thoughtful perspective.
