Shark Phobia

When I was a kid I read my dad’s readers digest book….Jaws by Peter Benchley…what a read

Later I saw the film…the music to it couldn’t have been more scary!

Hardly surprising that I have a shark phobia lol

Wherever , whenever on holidays my killer shark comes with me in my head and it’s particular I think to phobias that I retain lots of shark knowledge.

So I invariably I shite myself in water (except swimming pools) until I can get out!

For this reason I really cannot fathom why in Sharkey areas of the world swimmers and surfers go out there and present themselves as a food source to sharks

Is it really so surprising that folks get themselves bit and eaten???

No

Any of you have the same or worse phobias

I control my spider one

I control now my needle phobia even though my hearts beats out my chest

Same, they literally hunt humans and if they catch you they will rip you apart whilst drowning you at the same time and are very clever as well and will watch a humans routine before attacking. If a shark attacks its a case of mistaken identity.

I am sure most of you read about the deadly shark attack on the Mediterranean side of Isreal a few days ago, I have swam in those waters myself.

They are saying it was Dusky sharks and Dusky sharks arnt known to be man eaters, but no one seams to have informed this particular Dusky

I'm not good in open water.

I was swimming in the Aegean. Gin clear water. Very fine gravel bottom. No rocks no , perfect. A big black shadow moved underneath me. I was out coughing and spluttering on the beach in seconds. Then I realised what I had seen was the shadow of my own leg.

I do not think it is irrational to fear sharks. NOT at all!

Not a fear of sharks per se but a general fear of open, deep water where I can't see the bottom. This after almost drowning and having to be lifesaved. I don't swim out of my depth in the sea anymore and am not even that keen on swimming pools tbh!

A fear of jelly fish is what keeps me out the sea as I've gotten older. I'm not sure why - I have never been stung by one. They just give me the creeps.

Burnham on sea

It's not really a phobia if it can kill and eat you is it

It's a rational fear.

Sharks, salties etc scare the shit out of any rational person.

Give a wide berth to poisonous animals too.

Anything big and powerful enough to kill you deserves some cautionary respect.

But if you get into a funk with the thought of a house spider dropping onto your head, or a mouse running around your feet etc that isn't really rational is it.

Now about ghosts, demons and the Devil, or a vengeful God for that matter, you decide.

Uk

Nearly drowned twice in South Africa.

First time in Durban when huge waves drew me in. Was rescued by the SA chap I was seeing.

Second time I was on a show tour and all the company invited to a raft part.

All jumped I to the green fungi lake, boat raft moved and I panicked, some of the boys swam towards me but left me to cope. I backstroked as fast as I could and a big chap lifted me out of the water. Took two hours to recover.. Now, I NEVER go further into the sea if I can't feel the ground underneath.

The UK coastal waters are full of sharks. I think even Orcas are making there way around. I have swam surrounded by seals, they can be scary.

Snakes. Got bitten by an adder as a teenager. Survived okay after being rushed to the doctors. But been fearful of any snake ever since.

There's Sharks everywhere, even great whites in the Med. More likely to die in car accident going to the beach than be killed by anything in the sea. Seals are inquisitive and can bite. Surprisingly large and scary when they swim close.

"Ex navy, couldn't swim then and still can't swim."

I'd have thought being able to swim was part of the job description of being in the navy?

Not sure why exactly. Just did.

We had to pass a swimming test in the army in training, I remember it well, swim round the perimeter of the pool without holding onto the sides or putting your feet down or holding on, tread water and jump in with kit on and pick up a brick from the bottom of the pool.

Seems like the biggest risk on here is getting entangled in large ladies undergarments.
