I was thinking—has anyone had experience as both (1) an active fabber/cruiser and (2) a local election candidate? What are the chances someone is going to say “I recognise that face. And his cock.”? And then what happens?

I get a vote next week in the election of a west of England mayor

(I really don't know what they do, but the last one has been arrested on suspicion of being a nonce)

The only candidate I recognise is that UKIP geezer Arron Banks.

He definitely does NOT get my vote.

(Except no-one is getting my vote because I am going to be away on polling day and I do not have a postal vote)

Some years ago now I was living in the West Country. Young guy, mid 20s, being interviews on the local television news [can't remember which channel] as he was standing as the UKIP candidate in the county council election. I was having one of those OMG moments as I had met him and shagged him via one of those Lonely Hearts ads in a local paper, a few months before. He failed to win a seat.

In these supposedly tolerant and inclusive times, I would hope that any candidate's sexual interests wouldn't preclude him or her from election. Provided, of course, that any activities were legal and consensual.

You won his seat though

But, seriously, if it is legal, who gives a damn.

Thanks for answers, they confirm what I thought.

Now let’s up the stakes. I have a partner, who doesn’t know about all this. And I’d like to keep it that way. So, do I just run a mile from political visibility?

That is a more difficult question. If you did, I would delete all your accounts, stored pass words, cache and cookies, compromising photographs. Then consider how well known are you in this circle and whether have photos of you. Then, if it does come out, can you handle, "not me guv, must be somebody else"

When you stand for public office, the entirety of your life is "fair game" for the media in a way it is not for the private citizen.

Being gay, straight or bi these days probably has little impact on most voters, so the media tends not to care.

Anything that smacks of a lack of integrity or honesty and they will be all over it.

That can and does affect how people vote, if they think a candidate is lacking in moral fibre.
