"Some years ago now I was living in the West Country. Young guy, mid 20s, being interviews on the local television news [can't remember which channel] as he was standing as the UKIP candidate in the county council election. I was having one of those OMG moments as I had met him and shagged him via one of those Lonely Hearts ads in a local paper, a few months before. He failed to win a seat." You won his seat though ![]()

"Thanks for answers, they confirm what I thought. Now let’s up the stakes. I have a partner, who doesn’t know about all this. And I’d like to keep it that way. So, do I just run a mile from political visibility?" When you stand for public office, the entirety of your life is "fair game" for the media in a way it is not for the private citizen. Being gay, straight or bi these days probably has little impact on most voters, so the media tends not to care. Anything that smacks of a lack of integrity or honesty and they will be all over it. That can and does affect how people vote, if they think a candidate is lacking in moral fibre.
