Who misses this store

In 1980’s bought all my records from there.

Bought all my tech drawing gear for college

I so miss the pencils

Absolutely hundreds all arranged in hardness order

All you get now is shite quality HB pencils that last no time at all

I would love that pencil selection again lol

Anyone else have good memories of WG Smith

Were you even lucky to have a sexual encounter there ?

Ours in Loughborough closes this Saturday. Sad as the manager worked hard to make it successful but it's in a mall where all the shops are closing & developer wants to build student flats. Will miss the specialist mags (music & trains for me & crochet for Mrs).

To be brutally honest.. and fair.. they are outrageously overpriced

Their own branded products I mean

In this day and age.. who can afford such extortionate prices..

That having been typed.. another one bites the dust

Sadly some WH Smith branches are closing.

Thank the lord it’s being rebranded as maybe it will stop being a total rip off

No surprise it wants to focus on its travel business where it knows people have little other choice than pay their disgraceful prices - £2.99 for a twix £4.49 for a bottle of Coke Zero at Edinburgh airport , €4.99 for a small dairy milk at Malaga airport

People should where possible boycott them

W.H. Smith does NOT give me any sort of warm feeling.

Their stores that I enter operate in captive markets - railway stations and airports.

The prices are a rip-off.

But I guess that probably has as much to do with the sky-high rental rates of the airport and station owners.

Dreadful store that's trapped in the 90s

Bar their prices, of course

I’d say not as in most airports is also Boots who charge way less for things like drinks, sandwiches, chocolate etc

So it’s blatant profiteering imo because plenty have more money than sense and continue to shop there

Id be glad to see it go to the wall tbh

I'll be sad when they are gone as I used to go loads as a teenager but I rarely shop there anymore. They are maybe the best shop for having a large selection of magazines but a lot of what they do is available elsewhere for a lot cheaper.

It'll be a sad day when you can no longer buy a wetsuit on the M5 somewhere near Birmingham.

They never adapted to the modern world properly, although ironically some of the airport ones are staying as there's obviously a demand still for physical books and magazines.

I remember the days of going in for a seven incher...

Hopefully you will find your nearest artist's supplies shop. Independently owned preferably, and make a point of visiting and purchasing regularly, would also be a shame if more of them were to disappear.

Southend

They were great in the 70s and 80s but most have been in serious decline since and quite depressing to be in, run down, random selection of stock etc.

As an aside, did you know they invented the ISBN, used internationally as they needed a unique code per book when they were computerising in the 60s. The ISBN was later incorporated into bar codes. The first 3 digits of a barcode define the country of origin and all books are set to a fictitious country of bookland.

As above...

The one I used to enjoy going to as teen for the books and music is just a depressing dive now, with just a few pensioners buying stamps and birthday cards.

And yet the airport one I know of is always busy.

Rymans is almost as overpriced as WHS though.

There’s a small independent stationer, very near to Rymans in Wolverhampton, and his prices are always much lower.

A year or so ago I wanted some stationery items so went to WH Smiths...they didn't have what I.wanted..so bought online via Amazon. . They did have a pile of crappy kids toys for sale but very few stationary items. I said to myself at the time what's the point of a stationary stop if it doesn't sell stationary. No loss in my opinion. Totally lost their way..as for ",rebranding" instead of."Smiths".theyre going up be "Jones " Ffs..it that's the level of creativity the new owners are going to bring..gawd help them.

When i was a teen in the 70s they were a quality store. The one in King’s Lynn had plenty of wood and a feeling of quality. Books, school stuff, games and toys upstairs. I thought they were great.

However, for years they have had a tawdry and trashy look as though nobody cares. The one in Colchester looked grim - the windows filled with blank boards with ripped off sellotape, upstairs the whole place just felt like a place where nobody could be bothers. Cheap shelving - the whole place felt cheap.

Another one bites the dust.

LONDON WEST

50 odd years ago it was a well stocked, reputable shop. Then it became greedy, sold nothing but shit and sandwiches.

The staff were dreadful and once they got the post

office franchise they got even worse.I don't think I used them for at least 30 years and flatly refuse to use their airport outlets. Robbing bastards

Back in the day, they were good stores with plenty of stock of all types. If looking for something, you'd almost guarantee picking it up there.

Over the years the stock diminished, then the post offices moved in & reduced even more. The two/multi tier shelving was replaced with lower shelves & less stock.

When I was looking for something a little while ago, the online WHSmiths store had a sale and massively undercut the in-store prices, yet I could have it delivered in store for free.

Many high streets are now looking quite sad now with so many shops closing
