Something I've been 'aware of' for years, the case of senior IRA figure Freddie Scappaticci. I'm currently listening to an excellent podcast series on the subject (via BBC Sounds), it's very interesting and gives an idea of the dirty work that went on during the Northern Ireland conflict.

In 2003, it was reported that Scappaticci had been working for British intelligence, their highest-ranking agent in the IRA, and was known by the codename "Stakeknife".

Scappaticci was a lead member in the Internal Security Unit (ISU) for the IRA Northern Command. The ISU was a unit tasked with counter-intelligence and the investigation of leaks within the IRA and the exposure of moles or informers, known as "touts". Via the ISU, Scappaticci played a key role in investigating suspected informers, conducting inquiries into operations suspected of being compromised, debriefing IRA volunteers released from Royal Ulster Constabulary and British Army questioning, and vetting potential IRA recruits.

The ISU has also been referred to as the "Nutting Squad", in reference to the fact that many of the informers uncovered were shot in the back of the head (the "nut"). 18 killings as a result of ISU activities have been directly attributed to Scappaticci, including the murders of two senior policemen and a suspected informer named Joe Fenton.

No idea why the 'man on the street' is shocked. All intelligence agencies have operatives working on the inside. Yes innocents get killed, that's what happens in conflicts or wars. Each side is trying to get the advantage over the other.

People said after McGuiness died that he was a tout

No one knows the truth except those involved it’s so easy to throw mud and some may stick especially if the person is dead or moves themselves from from public life

Oh and BBC have been caught out lying look at the fake news using Hamas members son in a vid in Gaza.

BBC aren't the only people reporting on this, why are you suggesting that they're lying? There are multiple sources of information, including the interim report from Operation Kenova, that's been running for 7 years already.

Indeed, the IRA were, amongst many other things, grooming vulnerable teenage boys to join their ranks, quite often leading to their early deaths. If you're going to rip up the rule book, you shouldn't complain when the other side stops following it.

At some point we have to ask how much of these terrorists organisations were genuinely terrorists and how many are intelligent services plants/operators.

At what point do the public need to understand that terrorism is used by governments to control populations through fear and counter terrorism laws.

I have read articles implying several of the IRA were connected to foreign intelligence services including the CIA.

I don't think we will ever get the whole truth.

If you grew up in certain areas then you didn't have much choice, you are either with them or against them and if against them they will end up accusing you of being a tout and you'll end up in a shallow grave.

Of that there's no doubt. During the troubles there was a Catholic Church run hostel in NW London, just off the Kilburn High Road, that housed young lads who'd been told to get out Belfast & Derry or face kneecapping, or worse.

Many were small-time petty criminals with a penchant for car theft, which they carried on with in London. A fair few ended up on heroin as well, it was rife during that period, even more so in Ireland. Profitable business for the IRA.

One of my best friends spent a lot of time over there seconded to 14th Intelligence Corps, who worked very closely with the FRU, SAS and other units, bang in the middle of it.

Some people say that Scappaticci cost more lives than he saved, but that very much depends on who's doing the counting.
