First services were replacement bus, well from that low bar things can only improve! Public transport is a service should never be a business. It needs to pay it's way but no excessive profits

Well said, nationalisation will mean dirty, late trains, indifferent managment and customer service and more power to belligerent unions like the RMT, looking for their pound of flesh, just as it was in the 1970s. Finally, once this Labour government bankrupts the country as Labour governments always do, at or near the top of the list for cuts (demanded by the banks who prop up govt. finance by buying Treasury gilts) will be investment in the railways.

We seem to be allergic to train services being in public ownership, all the while ignoring the fact we have contracted out their management to train companies owned by the governments of Netherlands, Germany, etc, who take the profits made here and use them to subsidise their own railway.

Public ownership seems fine, so long as it's not the UK Government who owns it

If they really want to make a difference, renationalise the water companies. Their takeover of the railways is political ideology.

What's the EU reference?

Competition law in Europe allows the government to own and operate companies, so long as they do not receive subsidies that distort the market.

Their companies are taking 100s of millions of £s out of the UK railway network.

All the highly rated rail networks world wide are nationalised.

As are all highly rated public transport systems.

Privatised water and sewage services in the UK was a Thatcher brainwave. Now it's literally a shitshow.

I can’t see why re nationalising would be a bad thing. What is incredible is that most of the franchises are partly owned by other European publicly owned railway. The profits they make are going to European railways and subsidising those services.

The government needs to tackle the rolling stock issue. None of the train companies own them they are leased and they being changed through the nose for those leases.

Hopefully this will all be sorted.

Well I can understand the replacement bus as they always tend to do major engineering work over bank holiday weekend so as not to impact commuter’s trying to get to work.

In theory there is no difference between a private and publicly owned company running the services IF gov keep their nose out of the running of the service.

"I would rather they would bring the utilities back into public ownership."

I think that would be quite popular but Labour seems content to follow some neo-liberal policies with the occasional concession to client groups. Also the way Labour plans to take rail franchises back under state control as they expire is a lot cheaper than renationalising utlities like gas or water, whose current owners would have to be compensated which could cost billions.

You really haven't lived until you are stranded on Doncaster Station because the connecting train has arrived. There may be trains going to your destination, but they are the wrong kind of trains, and YOU as a mere customer (never a passenger) must wait for the crap train comoany you booked with to deign to get you to your destination

AND for your added convenience, the buffet, the men's room and the waiting rooms are now closed

HAVE A NICE DAY

For me it's Spain these days. The massive investment in affordable high-speed rail there is fantastic.

The UK is pretty shit but nothing on Germany, for the worst. Again though, it's much much cheaper than what we are forced to pay.

"Put the cargo of those thunderous lorries back on rail. Make it a bit safer on motorways "

That's the transport minister's intention as part of the expanding Great British Railways nationalisation.

Yet another downside of Mrs Ts privatisation of what should have remained a public service.

The main aim of private companies is making profit for shareholders, not serving the public.
