SH.UK STI Testing - Really impressed with service.

Just wanted to say how incredibly impressed I am with the completely free and discreet STI testing service from SH.UK. I've never done one before (naive of me, I know) but after some initial trepidation, found it was an incredibly quick and easy process.

I registered on the SH.UK website and initially tried to order my test kit on Thursday last week, but there were none left available that day. Apparently new batches get released at midnight, so early hours of Friday morning, I logged on again and managed to order one. It was dispatched during the day on Friday, and pushed through my letterbox by Royal Mail around 11am on Saturday - very quick dispatch/delivery service.

I completed the 4 tests - urine sample, throat swab (like COVID test), rectal swab (like COVID test, but at the opposite end - don't get these mixed up!). Blood sample was trickiest - I struggled to extract enough blood from the finger pricks (3 attempts) but managed it in the end. Then - back in the post box, around 11:30am - missing the Saturday post collection, unfortunately.

Now, bearing in mind this weekend was a Bank Holiday, my samples will have sat in the post box until sometime Tuesday. I got an email notification just after lunch on Wednesday morning that results were available, logged on and retrieved them. All in all, an incredibly quick service, especially considering the weekend/bank holiday hold-up.

All very discreet. An email address to login and order the kit, and to collect results - you could use a temporary one, if you wanted. A mobile number, to setup the login and a very discreet parcel through my letterbox, which simply had to be put back in the postbox once you've gathered the samples. I guess the only tricky bit might be the postal address to initially receive the kit. There were options to "deliver to an alternative address" during the ordering process, that could be useful for some people though.

Anyway - hopefully this will be useful information to help others who might have been considering getting tested, but be nervous about it, to go and do so!

I’ve used Frisky Wales. Same at home testing kit. Really quick turnaround with a text with results.

Yes, great service and very quick.

Use their advice for getting the blood to run freely and you should have less trouble. (drink plenty of water, shake down your arm etc beforehand). If you can't get a kit sent to your home then you can use an alternative address to have it sent to.

I’ve done this once and was extremely impressed with the speed - arrived day after ordering, sent back the same day - couldn’t believe I got the results the following afternoon! Amazing!

When I went to the clinic in April, they told me they were moving clients onto home test kits.

I can understand it is more efficient for the NHS but I am hopeless at trying to get the blood from my finger into the vial

Ugh, I really hope that’s not a new national policy.

Feel way more comfortable having blood taken by a professional in a clinic. Like you, the few times I’ve tried to use those finger-prick things, I’ve been hopeless at it

Sadly it is not available nationwide, as usual it’s a postcode lottery

Yes I’ve used the home testing kits and it’s excellent service, because I’m on prep I get checked at the clinic anyways every three months when they give me my new supplies of prep which last 3 months. However SH uk still sent me an email to remind me to let them know if I wanted another kit. The last time I was at the clinic I got talking to another man who was attending for the first time, he told me he was bi top “ so didn’t really see the need to attend before” I saw him yesterday in the supermarket when he told me the clinic tested him he is HIV positive!!! He did not know and he’s still trying to work out how to tell his wife??? Ffs.

What a great idea. Not in my area yet. If they could get the tests sent to a collection point or locker I'm sure more would sign up for it too.

North London (outer)

For those who would like an anonymous email address and don't know how, I can recommend Proton Mail, or mail.com.

Ok so this test kit sounds great. You get your results hopefully all negative.

If they return positive for anything what happens then? Do they provide antibiotics or other treatments?

Used them 3 times now and must admit brilliant. But the last test kit I posted a few weeks ago got trampled on and turned up flattened.

Yes, they will make a discreet follow up call to you to discuss, make an in-clinic appointment for meds collection and any further tests required.

The Inverness clinic does offer a postal service, but you need an address in their area. Do yiu have any friends who could accept the delivery for you?

If you struggle getting the blood you clinic will always take it for you. It’s just a way of making sure more people can get tested. Also if you have symptoms you’ve more chance of getting a face to face appointment.

Also cuts down the Did not attends. My clinic was saying one day when it was sunny, 40% of those with appointments didn’t turn up and didn’t notify the clinic they couldn’t attend. So they’ll be back crying they have to wait for an appointment.
