It struck me today whilst waiting for the rain to start

I recall as a kid those hot days when it rained and it always knocked up a good thunderstorm and lightening

Now I simply can’t recall when we last had one

I too recall watching a good electrical thunderstorm. Seeing the fork lightening coming towards me.

Just doesn't seem to happen anymore. At least not around my way in Northeast Essex.

I understand that there was a risk of danger when the lightening strikes earth.

But they were tremendous to watch.

It was the building up to the storm, thunder and lightning that I loved, you can still get that electrical charge in the air and the frisson that seems to surround your body in Portugal and Italy I have noticed, but not the same as it used to be up in the hills in Scotland. Mx

Saw a series of videos on YouTube where people are pretending to be Thor and going out in the rain trying to time it right so they point at the sky as lightning strikes.

Some of the lunatics even pointing rakes at the sky!!

We certainly seem to have less thunderstorms than we used to. I believe we have had one this year here and that was around March time which is a bit unusual, as thunderstorms tend to be a summer phenomenon. I'm a bit sceptical about global warming but the climate is forever changing. Still I suppose it has been doing that since the day the Earth came into existance.

The clean air acts and the removal of coal as domestic heating had a massive impact on the UK weather. Especially noticeable if you compare 1970s to now.

Yes huni but I don't think you can ignore signs like the trees blooming earlier every year, these huge glaciers melting and moving and the overall strange turn our weather has taken with extremely hot days ,rain and cold winds happening here anyway on the same day. Something is afoot and the climate has changed from what it was and during our life time. Mx

Like I did say, Marisa, the climate is forever changing. No two years seem to be the same. One year a very wet winter with endless flooding, and a hot dry summer. Then a cold dry winter and a gloomy damp summer. When I was a youngster we used to get weeks of snow but now it has usually vanished in a couple of days. I remember ice about 4 inches thick on water tanks whereas now it is just a thin layer. At the moment we have, here at least, experienced 4 cool wet days of June whereas April and May we far hotter and mostly dry.

Since 2007 we have an aged 71 lightening days per year. This is about 4% less than in the previous 50 years.

Possible Reasons: Some possible explanations for this decline include changes in weather patterns like "Spanish plume" events, which are characterized by warm air from the Iberian plateau, and potentially reduced frequency of these patterns due to factors like less Arctic sea ice.

Future Projections: Despite the recent decrease, UK Climate Projections suggest that lightning might increase in the spring and summer in the future due to climate change, while decreasing in the autumn and showing little change in winter.

Pointing out that the climate has always changed is like pointing out that the Earth revolves around the sun - it’s a given that doesn’t need restating. The issue now is the rapidity of that change, which is unprecedented in human experience, and that we are the cause. That, is the problem.

Being sceptical of CC is akin to being sceptical of tectonic plate science.

But bring on the thunderstorms.

Do you think your memory may have a very shallow depth of field?

We will remember a few instances in great detail from the first 10-20 years of your life because you had nothing else to do, but now we are all big grown up and have tons of things happening, we simply don’t notice or remember these things as much.

Every adult things the world is nothing like it was when they were younger, but the simple truth is that nothing changes much, but our perceptions of it do.
