I've just seen a short clip of the plane going down and it didn't seem like there'd been any kind of explosion. There was a massive fireball as it hit the ground though, straight into a residential area.

The worst thing about take-off is that the volume of flammable liquid is at its maximum for the journey.

Looking at the pictures of the fire-fighting on the ground, and it's distressing to realise how many might have perished in the blocks of flats and a hospital.

The plane looked undamaged until it sank into the buildings. Definitely wasn't on fire or had a hole in it.

There are few media outlets that are more accurate than the BBC, BBC Verify is excellent. In the early stages of incidents such as this they make it clear that they are relying to some extent on local sources.

Still the most relatively safest way of travel there is.

Maybe if it took off at the beginning of the runway instead of joining the runway half way down, it would have had the correct speed and flap settings 🤔

"Boeing really are going through the worst patch ever at the moment.

Your choice, but the cause could be a number of things not related to the plane.

The plane had lost its ability to stay in the air, so maybe the cargo and bags were badly loaded and it was out of trim or maybe the flaps weren't set correctly.

It's all speculation at this point, but the pilots must've felt ok with continuing with the take-off run and going into the air.

That plane should be making its decent into Gatwick around now, but it's not.

There will be staff at Gatwick now who should be getting ready to check-in and board passengers for the plane's return flight.

The crew who were due to operate that flight back to Ahmedabad would've more than likely knew the crew involved.

It's all just horrible.

This will sound sarcastic and it's not meant to be, but I wonder if they had a sense of foreboding yesterday before getting on the plane...

I've seen a dozen YouTube videos in which "experts" give their opinions. In only one did the guy point out that the landing gear was still down, indicating an hydraulic failure, likely caused by an electrical failure.

LG is normally retracted very soon after the plane lifts off.

He'd obtained the original video, not the poor quality copies seen in news reports. He also said that the flaps either weren't deployed fully, or not at all. The plane was in a stall.

RAT deployed plus loss of lift at a critical phase indicates loss of thrust. Either total loss of electrics or wrong lever pulled.

Yes, black box will detail actions and words of the crew.
