Had a wisdom tooth extraction and they could not get the root out. So I have to wait for a hospital referral. Any advice how to manage it while waiting? And by any chance are there any amazing dental hospital surgeons on here who will take pity on me and get the rest of it out asap like now?

OUCH! Feel for you. Some years ago I had to have all four wisdom teeth out, fortunately under general anaesthetic. 3 were impacted and the 4th was growing sideways through the bed of a missing tooth. A terrific amount of pain before and after surgery. I gave the hospital permission to film the op and was offered a copy of the video. Never watched it but gave it to my dentist who said I was wise not to.

Good luck and hope you aren't kept waiting too long.

Clove oil- either boots or Holland and baratt, ideal for immediate relief (bit like me!)

Your dentist should recommend what to take, give them a call. If it's infected they'll give you a prescription for antibiotics otherwise for pain they'll recommend paracetamol, ibuprofen or co-codamol depending on your circumstances

If you wait until Friday evening after your dentist is closed and call NHS111. Tell them what's happened and say you're in excruciating pain they'll refer you to a dental hospital very quickly

This. Your own dental professional will take care of you. These complications do sometimes happen and you have no need to be unduly concerned.

I've had a partially erupted wisdom tooth for years and at times it has been very painful.

The past 5 years or so though it's been fine and the dentist hasn't recommended removing it.

I've heard the op can be terrible, and the OPs experience is one I've heard before.

I'm going to leave well alone while I'm pain free

I remember when I had 2 of mine out, I have a phobia of dentists but was in significant pain so relented and went to see one. He told me 2 wisdom teeth had to come out and I nearly threw up.

He asked if I had private medical insurance which I did. He said I had 2 options, he could do the extraction for me in a couple of days time or he could write me a private referral and I could go to hospital. I asked what the difference was as I was a little naive and somewhat shellshocked at the news. He said if he did it it would be under local anaesthetic and I would be awake throughout the procedure but if I went to hospital it would be done under general. It was a no brainer, I went to hospital and I am glad I did because by all accounts one of them was a nightmare to get out and they had to break it into 3 pieces to remove it.

I still have the 2 on the other side that have been fine ever since.

I had two of mine out under general anaesthetic in hospital. It was completely pain-free and easy. I'm sorry for others whose experience was different.

You have my sympathy- in my late teens/early twenties, I had to have a double set of wisdom teeth taken out. This was done in hospital under general anaesthetic and the bruising was something else even down my chest. Then I had an infection and had to have antibiotics to clear it up. Was off work for a couple of weeks with it.

Thanks for the advice, both the good stories and the bad. What a nightmare. We don't even really need wisdom teeth. What a pain they are

My top wisdom teeth grew at an angle where they smashed my back molars to bits from the inside of the gum outwards. To this day I think that was the worst dental pains I've ever had.

I would go with an abscess I had - side of my face was like a golf ball. As the pain was caused by pressure nothing could touch it. Couldn’t ear, sleep or even think with it and this was on a Sunday. Managed to get an emergency appointment with a dentist on the Monday. When the laced it I could have hit the ceiling, but with the sucker on it the pressure and the pain were over in seconds - what a relief that was.

I wish could I have them all removed, but I can't afford it. Not eligible to get it done on the NHS.

I filed them down at home a few years ago, but they are still in the way.

Hate them. It's another thing bad about me.
