Just follow your doctor's advice. Do your research online, and also expect some odd side effects. I'm on statins, and I bruise very easily, Experience muscle aches and fatigue. That's some side effects. If side effects become troublesome, report them to the doctor. Normally, you experience some weird side effects within the 1st two weeks, but they should subside if they don't speak to the doctor.

On Atorvastatin have been for years no issues, apart from can’t eat grapefruit for some reason.

But I have it every so often (not had any problems)

Every person will have a different response to any pharmaceutical. Both in efficacy and side-effects. Don't base your own treatment decisions based on someone else's experiences.

My atorvastatin was increased from 20 mg to 40mg. The acid indigestion was unbearable. I stopped taking both. It has settled down but not perfect. I'm going for a medication review on the 10th of July

Atorvastatin gave me severe leg cramps and muscle aches. Switched to simvastatin and the cramps stopped completely. Muscle aches stopped, but I’m having tendon issues which are being investigated. The statins may be coincidental, they are unlikely to be the cause so I’ve had blood tests to rule that out.

I was on simvastatin but my doctor changed me over to atorvastatin last year - no problems on either for me (at least so far - don’t want to tempt fate )

Thanks everyone that’s really reassuring. I had a medical this morning and received a text message this evening telling me I need to go on Statins and to make an appointment with a clinician to discuss. Came as a bit of a shock. Can I still drink alcohol or do I have to reduce it? Why aren’t they just advising me to change my diet? TIA

"Can you still take viagara and p***ers? So many questions! "

tbh I’d go to a sexual health clinic and ask a professional. They’ve seen /,heard everything and will give you decent advice.

It’s also your complete health that needs to be addressed, any other medicine and conditions, not just the statins. Again the clinical staff are best placed to comment

Was on them initially after two strokes but had severe muscle cramps. They prescribed the whole gamut mentioned above. Muscle cramps became worse over the years to the point I could barely walk or sit in a car for more than 15 mins and agony at night. GP kept insisting it was nothing to do with statins but could find no other reason. Eventually I just stopped taking them and legs improved though never to the point they were.

As cholesterol was still sky high was referred to the lipid clinic. They have now put me on fortnightly, self-administered injections, which have to be delivered because of cost and cholesterol has decreased and muscle cramps now tolerable.

If you get severe cramps be persistent with GP. It took me four years

No,No and again No!

I was an early user of statins. Despite no noticable reduction in cholestorol levels they completly knacked my leg muscles. So much so my legs never recovered and over 15 years later I find walking any distance a problem. Each doctor tries to force me on them. At least my new doc admitted there were many problems with them and not suitable for everyone, despite what the medical profession would have you believe.

Don't forget that GPs have targets for prescribing statins and earn bonus.

Try them first, check for side problems and insist on reg blood tests to see if they are working.

This is the thing. Your doctor is there for advice and help. He/she isn't a dictator. Don't be afraid to question, ask for a change of meds, try things and stop if it gets unbearable and makes life miserable.

"Apparently grapefruit neutralises the medication "

It does the complete opposite, grapefruit inhibits an enzyme that breaks down statins. Taking grapefruit will increase statins in the blood stream leading to more side effects

Just avoid Grapefruit and Grapefruit Juice-they used to print it on the pharmacy label but seem to have stopped now.

Ask either your GP or the Pharmacist (you might also check the leaflet in the pack for things to avoid).

It's still printed on the label here in Wales. It says no more than two small glasses of grapefruit a day.

I just avoid it to be on the safe side.

It's no big deal.

Well, they can't do that... the pharmaceutical companies make a profit from selling them, the clinitions make a profit from prescribing them! Do you really want to upset those nice little earners by eating a healthy diet and getting some exercise? You will be a social outcast if you don't take you're prescribed medication and jabs!

This is the problem... how can you get an honest diagnosis from a clinician when they get a financial bonus by prescribing them (and other drugs). It is all wrong!!!!

"Anyone? Do I have the option to just cut out high cholesterol foods? "

-----------------------------

Yes there are alternatives to statins, but why not have an honest chat with your GP first about your concerns?

Here's an AI answer:

🥦 Diet-Based Approaches

- Oats and barley: Rich in beta-glucan, a soluble fibre that helps reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol.

- Plant sterols and stanols: Found in fortified foods like spreads and yoghurts; they block cholesterol absorption in the gut.

- Nuts, seeds, and legumes: Especially almonds and walnuts, which support healthy lipid profiles.

- Garlic: Some studies suggest it may modestly lower cholesterol, though results are mixed.

🏃 Lifestyle Changes

- Regular exercise: Aim for 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity weekly. It raises HDL (“good”) cholesterol and lowers LDL.

- Weight management: Losing even 5–10% of body weight can improve cholesterol levels.

- Quit smoking and limit alcohol: Both can negatively impact cholesterol and heart health.
