If he's old enough to join the army and get sent off to die for his country, then he's old enough to lead a council.

Let's hope he brings a breath of fresh air to the stuffy council and brings in a new way of doing things efficiently looking through a fresh pair of eyes. It can't be worse than what we've experienced from tge uniparties.

At that age even if he was a graduate of sandhurst he would not be running the army, he would only be a junior officer - more like a supervisor in a small department rather than running the whole show. So I’m afraid your analogy doesn’t work.

This. He has a whole team to support and advise him. He’ll make a great job if it if he has the leadership qualities. Give the guy a chance!

" A 18year old as been put in change of Leicester city council what could possibly go Wrong "

Hi Peepeter4, I'm not aware of any recent changes to Leicester City Council's leadership.

As far as I understand, Sir Peter Soulsby, a Labour Party councillor who previously served as MP for Leicester South from 2005-2011, has been the Mayor of Leicester since 2011 and was reelected in 2023.

Given the information available, I couldn't find any details about an 18-year-old taking charge of Leicester City Council.

It would be interesting to know more about the story you mention.

"I believe it is Warwickshire County Council."

Thanks, yes at Warwickshire County Council 18 year Councillor George Finch will serve as Interim Leader but only until a new Leader is confirmed after Leader Councillor Rob Howard resigned to deal with health challenges. No doubt young George will get plenty of support and advice in his temporary role hopefully a useful and educational experience for a such young person in local politics.

Unlikely that much will change, as the actual story is: he has taken over as interim leader due to his predecessor stepping down for health reasons.

He obviously impressed his local constituents enough to win his seat.

More of the usual political hysteria along with an attempt at tribal point scoring.

So far the sudden influx of Reform councillors have not excelled themselves anywhere in the country. Several resignations or expulsions from the 'Party' or even the council. 18 sounds very young to be a councillor let alone leader. However I say give the boy a chance. He may prove to be good.

No but youth nearly never does.

I know many 18 year olds and they are all absolutely great, but they are also all idiots.

That’s ok, they are 18 and they should be. It’s the one time in life you can be an idiot and still be getting things right.

Yes, it presents a great opportunity for an 18 year old, the role will undoubtedly be an educational experience for him in the interim position until WCC elect a new leader on 22nd July, it's a unique opportunity.

However, I personally believe that having practical experience outside of politics - whether in commerce, industry, healthcare, or other fields - can provide valuable insight and perspective for politicians before they enter the stage of politics.

That's a valid point. Common sense can indeed be subjective. Perhaps it's about striving for mutual understanding and respect, even when individual perspectives differ.

It's a glibe line trotted out by right wingers who dislike nuance, empathy and compassion.

People who recognise life is complicated that a one size doesn't fit all.

I firmly believe that the qualities of empathy, nuance, and compassion are essential for this life.

I also think you're right that life is complicated, and a one-size-fits-all approach often doesn't work.

Recognising individual differences and complexities can lead to more effective and compassionate solutions.

Its Warwickshire.

The newly elected Reform head of our county Council, who wasn't even at his own swearing in ceremony has decided after a few weeks that due to health reasons he cannot continue.

So his deputy, and 18 Yr old who wasn't even old enough to vote in the last general election is now in charge of a multi million pound budget.
