Prep 2-1-1 method

Was thinking about starting this as it appeal to me way more than taking pills every day, done a bunch of reading online about studies and what not but would love to hear from people first hand. So yeah if you have done this or are doing it let me know - love to hear from ya.

I did Ts and Ss for years (tues, thurs, sat, sun) and was fine. That was back in the day when I was paying for it. Now I get it on the NHS I much prefer daily as its simply 1 tablet every morning without thinking about it.

It was recommended to me at the health clinic based on how regularly I have anal sex.

Take it everyday no issues.

Much better than planning sex, if we have a party and one thing leads to another don't gotta worry about jack the next day

I take it everyday in with the other tablets I take so I never notice it. I almost feel if you do it event based it can stop you having occassional fun as you haven't taken it that day.

Then you take 2 pills on the day of sex one pill for 2 days after.

Just pop a pill a day, much easier and less worry.

Who plans sex? Sounds terrible

2-1-1 aka event based. You take Theo tablets 2 hours before having sex, then take 1 tablet a day for the next two days - or you take 1 a day and keep taking 1 a day for two days after you last had sex.

The alternative is that you have to take 1 a day every day - but as with all medications there can be side effects so if you only have sex occasionally then event based may be a better option for you.

Just a note about PrEP it can in some cases cause Kidney problems so you should have regular blood tests to avoid such problems if you are taking it regularly, which is why if you only have sex occasionally “event based” use may be a better option for you. All this should be explained to you at the sexual health clinic who will give you the PrEP.

PrEP only helps protect against HIV infection- there are plenty of other STI’s you can get through unprotected sex such as Gonorrhoea and incidents of antibiotic resistant gonorrhoea are rising.

Also when on PReP you must not take ibuprofen or similar drug compounds as both PReP and ibuprofen makes your kidneys work harder, so taken them both at the same time may well harm your kidneys...

I’m diabetic so I do the 2-1-1 method to prevent further damage to my kidneys, I was told there is a new version out that’s not so bad for your kidneys but you have to take it daily, I decided to stay with Prep, I’m sure you can get advice from the sexual health clinic, Good luck.

If I still lived in Brighton I would definitely be on daily PREP. Living in rural Essex I need to be realistic and not just burn through the entire supply (to no purpose) even if the NHS supplies it free, it's just wasteful. Also, PREP can affect the liver and kidneys so there's also, for me, no point in doing that every day to my body just to be ready at any moment which is unrealistic (sadly!).

Like you I also choose to do the as and when approach as it seems unnecessary to put a strain on my kidneys if I’m not getting much sex. What pisses me off is taking the two pills only to find it’s another ‘no show’ 😡

You need to go to your local sexual health clinic. They will test you to make sure you are HIV negative (you can’t take PrEP if you are positive). They will probably offer to test you for some other STI’s as well.

If all clear they will give you PrEP along with a discussion on the ways to take it (daily or event based). They may also offer to give you vaccinations for Hepatitis, also a supply of condoms as well if you want them.

I too am doing on demand. No problems taking the 2, or the next day 1, but I did forget (once) to take the second follow up day 1. 😳

I did also try daily for a while but felt I was taking more than my clinical need given my actual frequency of bb sex encounters.

It’s also important to remember that there’s always condoms to fall back on if you get the chance of a spontaneous meet, and you don’t have time to get protected on the 211 regime.

In my experience they’re offered to you and recommended to have the, but the decision is yours and doesn’t affect them supplying prep as long as your other tests and kidney function is ok of course

Hepatitis is highly infectious and can be fatal in some cases. Best to get vaccinated if you can. You need a couple of boosters and then your antibodies are regularly checked to keep up your protection.
