Hosepipe ban

Many water regions are introducing hosepipe bans due to potential water shortage and implying high usage is the cause. Hundreds of thousands of houses are being built in almost every area but are there any new reservoirs being built to supply them? No

Couple new ones are on their way.

In the meantime we should all fill up a couple of 5L water tanks in the bath and take a trip to nearest reservoir to top it up! 😀

Your point is correct about the woeful lack of infrastructure the water companies have NOT invested in. Instead they have taken huge bonuses and paid out billions to share holders.

The water companies should be renationalise and this country should not pay for it. Take shares instead of money fines, for all thier illegal acts.

One point you are incorrect on , a new reservoir opens near Havant Hampshire, I think in 2-3 years time.

On a side note to this ,if you are a blue badge holder you are exempt from any hosepipe ban.

The logic is that if you have a blue badge and therefore considered disabled, you cannot physically lift a potentially heavy or awkward watering can. Very much a generalisation there as you can get a blue badge for various reasons, but now you know.

I was at a festival over the weekend and a burst mains pipe in town took out all the water for the festival. Very inconvenient. A new reservoir is being built in Chatteris, near Huntingdon.

"How much water do they lose in leaks?"

gallons upon gallons. I think you should be more worried about pollutants and crap in the water. Did you know that they don't thoroughly clean the drinking water, and it's recycled from sewage water? Tests have found that drinking water in various locations around the UK has faeces, urine, medication, pesticides and various other things in the water in small dosages, but still can be harmful.

I walking miles every day to my local reservoir and the water looks dirty.

It’s mad isn’t it. We live on an island, surrounded by water. It rains so much in a lot of the country, especially in the north and up in Scotland. We should never be short of water. Maybe we should have desalination plants and use sea water to sort this out. Although the sea is full of shit, as we know.

You are correct in that there are a couple of new reservoirs being built, BUT they are very recent developments - none have been built for the last 30 years. Also so much water is being list through leaks where the aging Victorian infrastructure has been poorly maintained. On the whole the Victorians did a really good job - they built things to last and built in over capacity for the future. In recent times all they seem to be interested in doing is extracting as much money as possible for the smallest outlay they can get away with.

These bans should come with a huge fine. The lack of strategic thinking in politics shows a loss of experience. Also considering the agriculture water use those that dedicate a portion of their own garden to food production such as a vegetable patch should get a pass it's far less water intensive than mass farming and reduces water waste overall. The fact we allow companies to make profit and do less than the minimum to invest in water conservation.

People also don't seem to understand that one of the biggest reason we don't have enough housing is due to the water companies refusal to support supply. You can't build with no water supply and the government lacking a spine allow water companies to push the investment on to the developer, which In turn means you need a higher rate of return, and is partly why "low cost housing" ends up needing anything but low cost.

"And, maybe the water providers in Scotland aren't all that good. Maybe it's just got something to do with the weather? They get more rain."

Your ignorance is presumably understandable but it begs why you feel the need to comment on something you clearly have little knowledge of.

There is one water provider in Scotland, it is not privatised. Scotland has plentiful fresh and reasonably priced water.

England has plenty rain, but it loses tons more fresh water through defective infrastructure than it uses.

All English water companies are privatised.

Your ignorance is pretty common place but nonetheless ignorance.

Maybe try listening instead of having to make smart alec comments?

about 25 years to late. It's not just about reservoirs, it's drainage, flood reduction and balancing what we need. Kier Starmer is almost self erotising of attracting ai business. Despite being of an intelligence to be a human rights lawyer he seems incapable of seeing the ai we want and what we don't. He seems to think we want data centers, yet doesn't have a logical plan to help code developers. It's like wanting to get into the trainer marketing by wanting to be the factories that makes it and not Nike HQ. Data Centres imploy a skeleton staff and burn through energy like a ever growing forrest fire and needs more water than a bottling plan, yet hasn't got the balls to take control of the suppliers. I'm all for profit but tax is paid by us from profit (or from tax) water is an monopoly based on region so it's not free trade so take it back and aim on investor benefits. Investors being all the taxpayers (so amazon with their offshore tax status can wait for water on a long list) and invest in time and not 25 years later). The more you invest centrally you can invest in innovation and drive interest. We used to benefit for selling infrastructure expertise now we haven't a clue

No.

We pay far more to bail out privatised companies who give so much of their money to their shareholders they need us to fund their actual work.

think you have a limited grasp on reality. in a time when money was scarce due to rebuilding and oil crises vs a French company skimming your tax money. Up to you. I'm not moaning but I do have a better understanding of the fact that its complex but prefer that money diverted to other projects than to end up in Monaco. But if you like it so much you can pay my tax band if you like, why volunteer to.

The water companies are privatised

The census is used to work out infrastructure.

The weather forecasts are varied

If more people are in the country since 1976, why hasn’t capacity increased to cope with what’s expected. Dividends are being paid, water bills are up.

We did indeed have droughts in the late seventies and now we find ourselves lacking capacity.

With an increase in the population of over 9 million it follows that water usage and sewerage requirements will just not keep up with it. It is stupid for public policy not to take account of massive increase in population and force a similar increase in utilities, or restrict inward migration.

It's stupidity and not true conservative ideology. If thatcher had a brain and less hung up on unions, new age travellers. Id scargil wasn't a egotist we could be the best at extracting coal in hard conditions with lower and lower seams. We could have experts in maximizing returns. but no we pay more for importing coal and paying for generations lacking a workplace and dignity for what to counter the right of people to want a better life. Yes it cost more to extract than to buy from china, but a damn site less than paying for the death of towns, benefits, crime and now we are reliant on a set of countries that can use supply as a point of leverage.

I never thought denationalisation of water a good idea since it is a very necessary commodity. Trouble was, like most nationalised industries it was very inefficiently run. We've suffered droughts before. New reservoirs have been built but not sure they are being built fast enough with the increase in population. I read somewhere, not so long ago, that 14 new reservoirs are being built in England alone. Even then it is very much weather dependent to keep them full.

Is the alternative efficient?

At least nationalised water companies (which seem to work very very well in the countries whose companies own our water companies!) have the function of a water company as their priority, not shareholder profit.
