If Farmfoods and pound land can do 2 litres of

Milk for £1.00, why can't huge Tesco £1.65) and the others (£1.45) do the same. It doesn't sound much but does add up

Some items like milk and bread are termed loss leaders. They are sold at rock bottom or below cost to get you into the shop, where you purchase higher margin products as well. Its a marketing thing

Just think how little the farmer gets if you only pay 50p per litre. It’s no wonder that farmers are moving away from dairy and into glamping or solar.

Because it’s immoral to pay the producer less than the cost of production.

Others have said it …think of our Farmers and happily pay a realistic price for your milk. Seems “ Fair Trade” principles don’t apply to our own agriculture industries.

Well, the thing is, Poundland CAN'T afford to sell milk at £1 which is why they are closing stores across the country and in a years time will probably be on the Where Are They Now, with Woolworths,Wilko's,BHS,etc

We buy 50% of what we eat from other countries. It is cheaper to buy butchered lamb from New Zealand than it is to raise the sheep here. We import shearers, no not Alan, to give what we have a hair cut. The chicken you eat is a few weeks old but a chicken can live for decades. Sausages are not born that way. Bacon shrinks because it is treated to enzymes to make it soak up water. Solar farms will not save the planet. Avocado is not a super food, it is a marketing gimmick, just like cheap milk. Butter does not belong in coffee.

That’s a very well put statement.

We seem happy to let our own farmers struggle because we wilfully have no concept of how our food is made, and the only thing we care about is getting more food cheaper. We don’t give a shit about the quality of the food or the producers.

I’ve just come from a week in France and walking around their supermarkets is both eye opening and depressing in equal measure.

Their food is fresh, ripe, tasty, sold loose so you can get what you need, and aye, some of it is a wee bit more expensive, but people are happier, healthier and eat far far less ultra processed food.

And I am talking about the poor people as well as those with enough money.

Why do we blindly accept such utter mediocrity?

Yes, I can afford it but I'm thinking about the many that struggle.

On saying that, farm foods are brilliant

Do they specify which animal their £1 "milk" comes from?

I asked Mrs Hurd from Cowes but she didn't know but her sister Thora believes in frozen milk

Factory farming out competes many coop initiatives, and the supermarkets cause huge waste in pursuit of their profit and consumer demand for uniformity and ease.

Basic food stuffs used to be subsidised here . I've lived in France USA and Ireland as well as UK and food here was always amazingly cheap. The quality now though is dipping in to fast food low quality "filler" and the price is creeping up, farmers are going bust and being hovered up by corporates. The only thing not changing , is supermarket profits.
