I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned Boardwalk Empire, unless I've missed it.

A brutal look at Atlantic City, New Jersey during the prohibition period, it's up there with The Sopranos etc and features Steve Buscemi as the main character, with great supporting roles from Michael K. Williams (Omar - The Wire), Stephen Graham as Al Capone, and many others.
