"Northwich is one of Cheshire's famous "wich" towns along with Middlewich, and Nantwich, they owe their origins to salt production, a legacy that stretches back to Roman times. The "-wich" suffix is rooted in Old English, essentially meaning a place where salt was made. Salt extraction has been a longstanding industry in these towns, and it's still happening today. " I'm currently tracing the route of a possible agger of what may be an undiscovered Roman road that looks to run from Castleford in Manc, crosses the North Cheshire Ridge Roman military road that was discovered in 1968 and appears to be headed towards Northwich. With Roman forts known to have been in Castleford in Manc and Castle in Northwich, if the ridgeline I am investigating does turn out to be a Roman road agger, it will go someway to solving the mystery of the purpose of the North Cheshire Ridge road. It appears to be the same width as the NCR's agger, suggesting it could too be a military road, offering a north/south intersection with the NCR's east/west alignment that runs towards Deva (Chester). | |||
