I know it's old news now but still pertinent in the debate on wokeness.

I never really noticed much discussion in the gay world about it. Personally I loved it and its skewering of male fragility. Just wished foreman alternate ending when all the Kens empowered themselves by admitting they wanted cock

I enjoyed it. Just a silly film based on a doll.

"I enjoyed it. Just a silly film based on a doll. "

Well, there was a *little* more to it than that

What surprised me is how it stands up to repeated viewings (my wife's obsessed with it so I've seen it at least half a dozen times). Even when you know the funnies are coming I still laugh. "Would you like me to play guitar at you for four hours while looking deep into your eyes?"

And America Ferrara's "you're never good enough" speech should be required reading in schools.

Haven't seen it yet, will do at some point, I usually enjoy the work of Mr Gosling. Hoping to watch it the first time as simple entertainment then go back and do a more in-depth critical analysis.

Have read a few interesting things about the different messaging within it. Obviously highly scrutinised, at the time of release, at the peak of the 'wokeification' phenomena. Will be interesting to see if it is used as a case study for film-craft, media studies and sociology scholars in years to come.

As a film purveying a strong message sugarcoated in high entertainment value it worked brilliantly I thought, and will come to be seen as a classic.

There really isn't. Just a silly film, you'll either enjoy it or you won't. Wouldn't say I'd ever watch it again or bother with a sequel.

Good to know this provoked a PM from an absolute asshole with nothing constructive to say who then blocked me from responding further.

Male fragility is alive and well!

I knew it was political but it was much more political than I expected. At two hours I thought it might run out of things to say but it really didn't, and yes, America Ferrara's speech was remarkable.

I only got round to it as I felt I should after watching Oppenheimer, but I've bought lots more pink knickers since.

Thanks! Glad somebody else gets it.

It and Oppenheimer weren't as good as all the hype around them. OK to watch but not worth a repeat viewing.

Glad I didn't bother seeing either at the cinema.

My issue with it was more that it had all this noise around it and it was progressive etc etc... I was forced to watch this with the other half or else football would be restricted.

I didn't find that... it felt regressive to me. But surface level wokery consider it an intellectual peice that sticks it to the man...

Consider then.. the film fram3a gender in a binary term men v women, it doesn't explore the much loved fluidity foisted on us today at all... no dichotomy there then.

Much if not all of the feminist critique is delivered thro over simplified or stereotypical points...(Ken and patriarchy via horses).

So it plays out that feminism is basically a punchline an aesthetic or... corporate feminism so to speak empowering through say brands rather than material change.

Big one was the matriarchy as a mirror of patriarchy so the men are the accessories. So what is this endorsing role reversal? How does that make it better... it doesn't... but the solution... at the end is skewed af... men are given limited political participation but not actual parity, reinforcing an idea that parity its either not attainable or not the goal. Lordy imagine saying that to a lady...

What other shite pops... ok... the exceptionalism of barbie... despite the diverse cast the primacy is still the old stereotypical white blond barbie.

The only good thing I really took from it... the choice to leave barbiland and become human is seen as empowering. So after all the bullshit white knicghtint, dog whistles and wokery - in the end fulfillment lies in traditional real world simplistic femininity, biology, reproduction you know ordinary female things.

Which surely is counter the bullshittery people are drawing from it. As its a step back to traditional roles you know the restrictive ones were trying to dismantle rather than transcending them - as such it made me laugh.

4/10

That at least is a considered critique from your point of view, so cheers for making the effort.

Would have been good to see Ryan Gosling get to choose a penis of his own at the end too. Just to balance things a bit

Good points Chris but they did still need to get Mattel on board. I wonder if Mattel would agree to it now.

It did also take the mick out of stereotypical feminity, high heels and all that, but some of us on here aren't in a position to be neutral about that.
