Edinburgh

Every region and county has their own accents and phrasing. A keen ear can often spot differences in people from adjacent villages. Even cities will have different accents depending on the district.

When I was a kid I could tell which village the other kids were from by their accent but it all sort of blended away. That was in Rutland. People down here think I have a posh accent because I don’t drop my aitches.

the sussex accent isn’t easy to define and there aren’t that many sussex specific words either, although ‘somewhen’ is one, meaning ‘sometime’.

I have read that there are many times more accents in the UK than there are in the USA - a country many times larger and with five times the population.

Think I got that from Bill Bryson in his book Mother Tongue. He’s normally pretty good on such general statements.

I guess that’s only English-spoken accents.

Not sure how the Hispanic ones fit into that.

A long time ago I worked in Reading in Berkshire and one of my colleagues was from Newbury, just 20 miles away. His accent was very different from anyone from Reading. There must be thousands of accent variations.

Varies so much from region to region and county to county. Sometimes you can even work out which small town someone comes from as he sound different from someone in a town less than a dozen miles away.

During the covid con I worked for a company 32 miles North of my home town, it took me months to fully understand what my colleagues were saying. I'm sure they thought I was either deaf or daft

There's also a whole class/wealth dynamic to accents as well. Even in a town or city there will be differences
