Taking prep before HIV test

I've been taking prep on demand for some time as I have long periods where I'm not sexually active. Now I found that my pills have long expired, I got them before they were on NHS. I've been told that I need a full STI/HIV test before getting prep on NHS. Should I avoid taking prep for a certain amount of time prior to the test? I guess it might mask a result?

Not at all!

Although an issue might be the efficacy of any outdated medicine and please be very careful if you mean that’s what you will be taking before testing [?]

Daily Prep users have std/hiv testing and we certainly don’t have any issues being tested with it in our systems.

thanks!

Yeah I've kept using it thinking it's better than not taking any at all. Finally plucked up the guts for a full NHS assessment

Hi mate. Absolutely not. No need to wait or delay having taken the drug. No need not to take the drug if otherwise you should just because you have a test coming up.

I take daily prep including on the morning of a test.

You mention your pills are out of date. That is not ideal. I would not worry too much - the date is a best before not a “worst after” though efficacy does go down - and given risks of acquiring HIV are low per sexual interaction in any case you will probably be good.

That said, the further past their date, the less protective they are and deterioration is accelerated if they are not securely stored in their original container with the screw-top tightened and the de-hydrator thingy alongside the pills inside.

That saying get yourself to a clinic, get fresh meds, get regular testing and ask about vaccinations. Also ask about doxycycline as PEP and you will be sorted able to play as much or as little as you like with or without barrier protection as you feel is right for you.

Well done for taking the responsible step and engaging with the sex health clinic.

certainly understood, and I'll be open and honest about it at the clinic next week. Never intend to do bb, but I just can't say no to a cute guy whether or not there are raincoats nearby ...

The advantage of daily prep is that it protects during those unplanned sessions in a way that event based prep doesn’t and the condoms you never bought or brought certainly don’t. Good luck with the cute guys.

This ^^^ is incorrect information, it IS an expiry date on your medication NOT a best before date. As others have said every day Prep users have their checkup with Prep in their system. Excellent news about you going to the sexual health clinic xx

Contact your local NHS secual health clinic. Their records are not shared with your GP, separate systems.

Also, buy a simple douching kit and get practising with it!

I had a test recently and also collected some new prep tablets.

The nurse advised me at the time to check the dates on the new tablets and never to use tablets that are out of date as they are ineffective.

If your tablets are out of date you should dispose of them and phone the clinic to let them know, they may allow you to call in before your appointment for fresh supplies. Meanwhile use condoms for safety.

It's very straightforward.

Book an appointment, as others have said, your GP doesn't need to know. You'll be asked to provide a urine sample and to give both mouth and anal swabs. You'll also be asked for a blood sample.

They'll check up on your immunisations for Hepatitis and offer you jabs there and then if needed. They can test you for HIV there and then from your blood sample.

At my last check up/prescription collection, I was also given Doxy PEP tablets along with the PrEP.

Don't keep your expired tablets. Once you have your new ones, drop them off at a pharmacy to be disposed of.
